That's a fairly decent summation of the Other M debacle.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

Of course. That's why I'm only upset at Nifflas and his company, Nicalis. If I didn't have any friends and I played games purely for my own enjoyment, these butcheries wouldn't annoy me. However, now I have to work around this garbage and explain to friends that Cave Story was made by one person and is free and doesn't suck. I've had long IRC conversations explaining the whole situation to 2 separate people who wouldn't even try the game because they thought it was just some commercial indie game among a bunch of similar games, not knowing how truly awesome it is, and how it started a revolution of indie game development. It just seems like the whole attitude towards Cave Story from newcomers has shifted for the worse. Sure, old fans know the game is free and the Aeon Genesis translation is great and is still available, but newcomers have no idea. The original beloved game is being diluted and obscured by advertised rehashes which fail to capture the charm of the original.
I understand, but as someone else mentioned, these people wouldn't have heard of Cave Story at all if not for the "crappy, commercialized version" of it. And hey, from the sounds of it, many of these people will eventually find their way to the free, original version. Still seems like a net positive to me. On an unrelated note, this is why I don't get annoyed by shitty Hollywood remakes. They don't detract from the original in any way, and more people will end up experiencing the first work.

Lex has pointed out one negative effect of this situation, I have cited another. It's not catastrophic or anything, but it's not a win/win situation. Most certainly because nothing new is being done, and we're once again left with something old and well-known sold to us under the guise of an improvement, making use of our nostalgia and desire to support the author.
There seems to be an implication that you're being coerced into buying the new, commercialized version of Cave Story. You're not. Just ignore it and you're no worse off than when you started, and the creator has a few more bucks in his pocket. Also,

I can think of as many examples in support of this point as I can counterexamples to it. Sometimes the fans are correct and you need to give them what they want. Other times they're not and listening to them leads to a giant, pandering mess. It completely depends upon the specific situation.

An excellent example would be Empire Earth III. Also, is the original music in the free version of Cave Story, stereo? How do you extract this music from the game to replace the ones in Cave Story+? I love the slight level changes on Normal difficulty (more spikes and death pits in some places)and I also kinda like the 20% speed increase though it does make it much harder to control your character in tight spaces!

Cave Story Plus allows you to switch between the updated and classic music and graphics from the options menu.

Yes, but I hear the Original music included in Cave Story+ is mono while the copies in the original game are apparently Stereo. I am not confusing the new remixed versions with the old original versions.

The original music is included in its original format. If it is mono, it is because they did something to break the music player.

Perhaps the people I read saying it was mono were confused. Apparently the Indie Bundle (Non-steam) version got an update or the retail version always included a Remastered version of the original tunes while the Steam version did not. Steam only had New and Old, not Remastered. Today's update to the game however introduced the new Remastered soundtrack to Steam.

I have to adress two things here: 1) Nifflas doesn't own Nicalis. In fact, Nifflas doesn't even work at Nicalis. Nicalis is owned by one Tyrone Rodriguez. It is this Tyrone dude who approached Pixel to negotiate the ports of Cave Story. Nifflas is just another indie developer who also made some business with Nicalis/Tyrone, kinda like Pixel. 2) Cave Story on WiiWare and DSiWare do run around 12% faster, but that's because the original PC game ran at 50 fps, while Nicalis' ports run at 60 fps. Why they did this? Because Pixel actually wanted the original game to run at 60 fps, but couldn't achieve that speed for some reason, so he had to settle for 50 fps at that time. Finally, the original version of Cave Story is still available, and it's still free, plus nobody is forcing no one to buy anything, so...leave people be?
