I am a newbie at this for sure, but I am wondering if anyone else has attempted to do a speedrun for rolling thunder? It's not necessarily a long game, but it is one that, to be done fast at any rate, would look pretty cool, considering that you can't jump over the enemies unless they are ducking, and that u have a limited supply of bullets. I'm not going to post anything yet (it's all....rather crappy so far) Any suggestions?

I have started a few runs on this game. It's a little slow paced, but it is a very hard game so a time attack would be pretty cool. You might also consider the Capcom game "Code Name: Viper" (a.k.a. "Ningen Heiki - Dead Fox") which is exactly like Rolling Thunder but with much better graphics/music. While the arcade looked cool, I think Rolling Thunder did not translate well to the NES, perhaps because of the whole Tengen/Nintendo feud.

Yeah, arcade Rolling Thunder is where it's at. And Code Name: Viper is right up there with Krion Conquest in the shameless rip-off category. Not a bad game (indeed better than NES Rolling Thunder), just pointing it out. -Josh

I almost used the word "rip-off" to describe Viper, but then I remembered the golden rule of video games:

i'll definitely have to check those out...haven't tried them at all. But yeah, rolling thunder is hard beyond all reason. When i was a kid i couldn't get past the 5th level. anywho, ill post something when i feel i have it. I am on of those guys that thinks the only cool videos are the ones that show people doing near impossible shit, basically just owning the game and making it extremely entertaining to everyone, not just the people who have played it. Sure timeattacks are cool, but putting that together with fancy stuff makes for real entertainment. At least to me.

Beat the 2nd run around.. now THAT would be impressive! The 2nd time around there's even more enemies and a ton of lasers which makes jumps and timing a REAL B**ch. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

I'm trying to remember the name of an NES game: side-scrolling action, seemed futuristic and stuff. The bad guy taunted you from a big screen or something when you died, I'm pretty sure. When you're going through the levels, there were doors that you'd go in and your ammo would start going up--the longer you stayed in, the more you got up until a max. I remember another part were you had to fight either dogs or wolves. I don't really remember much else since it wasn't my game, but I just remember playing it a little. Any ideas on this one?

Yep, same to me. Wouldn't be a bad timeattack, as wouldn't Code Name: Viper which is highly similar. -Josh

We've talked about these games before (I don't feel like searching for it right now), and the consensus is that the two games are so similar that only Code Name Viper should be bothered with. Rolling Thunder was a cool arcade game but the NES version is quite poor, with hardly any music and a stick-figure protagonist. Control-wise, it is very stiff, as you cannot control your jumps very well nor can you shoot while jumping.

Good point. It's just that it's highly doubtful we'll see MAME rerecording for a very long time, if ever, and I don't know what other emulators support the arcade version. -Josh

why is this movie of the first section http://www.angelfire.com/ex/uobt/rollingthunder-foda.zip (which i made just now in 15 minutes) 429 frames faster than yours? analyze the jumps, which enemies really need killing, and which you can skip, shoot from before enemy is on screen for impressive factor, and use a lot of frame advance button.

that was much better, but the time i got is faster (use frame count to know). you can continue from my run if you want. i think the way you took damage was better than mine, maybe

hey FODA, did you try area 6+ in story 4? i would love to see your strategy on these; as they are a LOT harder. maybe we can submit this as you and i when it's done! edit: upon hearing what some people said on IRC i'm using a password to start this run at story 3, which is the hardest difficulty. you can still check the progress at the link above. or check it here if you're too lazy to scroll up: http://24.211.239.191/Super%20Play%20Movies/Rolling%20Thunder%20(U).fcm

the password thing is a good idea, i think its the same case as for kickmaster. let me watch it now hmm you must record it at least from reset... even if inputing the password. but thats ok as its still under development ok i see you're doing much better. there are some minor mistakes that really bother, that is bumping into plataforms while jumping up and walking backwards for a few frames. i'm almost sure that can be fixed.

hmmm it starts to look nice, this difficulty level is cool because of the bang-bang factor. did you know you can jump over bullets? its very usefull here, first section of hard difficulty, 350 frames faster than you did. jumping bullets was essential. http://www.angelfire.com/ex/uobt/rollingthunder-foda.zip
