On a quest to stop Nosferatu and his reign of terror, Kyle races to save his fair maiden Erin. Many obstacles lay ahead, but Kyle has no remorse for those in his path.

  • Forgoes Power-Ups

Dooty's Comments

Improvements are usually easier to do than TASing something from scratch, so, I'd like to thank Zurreco and FODA for their runs, even with all the new tricks a lot of their strategies and routes can still be seen in this run.

Tricks and Glitches

Power Punch

Initiate any combo, after the second hit press down for one frame, wait nine frames then press forward+Y.

Run Delay

Just tap the control pad twice, wait for Kyle to build up some speed then hold the desired direction, this is the base of the other tricks used in this run.

Fall Through Floor

Do the above trick near a ledge and then jump, you can keep jumping as needed, but you can't turn around, bump or take damage, also the platforms must be at the same level.

Invisible Platforms

Sometimes Kyle will grab on an invisible platform while falling through the floor, when this happens, if you can hoist him he can do the following tricks;

Teleport

Pressing the Y button while Kyle is on an invisible platform will teleport him to the nearest platform in front of him, pressing forward will teleport him to the nearest platform behind him.

Blind Play

The camera will not follow Kyle if the nearest platform is off screen, the good thing is that some enemies or traps will not hurt him, also rotten platforms and doors work as they should.

Enter Walls

If there's a wall instead of a platform near Kyle, he will be put inside that wall, press the Y button to enter further onto the wall then jump to be ejected on the other side.

Stage by Stage

Dungeon

The strategy to avoid those red crystals made a big difference in this stage, the run delay trick and some small optimizations also did.

Boss - Werewolf

Normally Kyle would have to collect 9 red crystals to finish a combo with a power punch, but not on this TAS.

Mosaic

I was testing the run delay trick here when I found the fall through floor glitch, sadly it couldn't save time in this stage.

Boss - Twin Orangutans

Almost the same strategy was used to defeat the orangutans, the power punch sped up the process a little bit.

Mansion

The fall through floor glitch saved quite some time here, it was even possible to choose a shorter path using the glitch.

Boss - Zombie Vampire

The first phase of the fight is pretty straight forward, but the zombie's head is kinda hard to manipulate.

Dungeon 2

The blind play trick didn't save any time here, but the axe at the end of the stage can't hurt Kyle while the giltch is active.

Boss - Phantom

Take damage on a boss battle is something that I particularly don't like to watch, but it saved a pretty good amount of time, so.

Mosaic 2

I did a test run of this stage using the fall through floor glitch to access the alternative door, but it is slower.

Boss - Rock Titan

His big foot animation is kinda long, so manipulating the boss to not transform more than once made this battle a lot faster.

Final Stage

A lot of small, hardly noticeable optimizations to save time here, but the fall through floor glitch proved to be a big time saver.

Boss - Nosferatu

This boss is kinda simple to manipulate in the first phase of the fight, but things get ugly when he transforms into a bat.

HD encoding!
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

You know, I was sort of expecting that once you had teleporting and fallthrough glitches, the game would change really drastically. That turned out not to be the case; even though there's definite skipping, the gameplay is mostly intact. It is really nice to see you don't need to get red crystals. The boss fights were especially awesome. However, I'm a little concerned about the final Dracula fight. The bat attacks look pretty ugly compared to the previous movie. Anyway, Yes vote, and I have a few possible screenshot suggestions: * The final punch on the Twin Orangutan bosses * Early in the last stage, you get to a place where two ghouls jump at you from behind. That looked like a good screenshot. * The Dracula fight, when he's giving you the silly kick in response to your hits... it's like you two are performing Capoeira.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. I had to watch the previous TAS and this one side by side to truly appreciate the improvements. While it's a tad slow the new glitches adds tons of entertainment and some WTF, yes vote.

I didn't know about that palm attack! It does a lot of damage O_o I like your clever use of the game's moveset on every situation, it's well done. The glitching... Wow, nice find. Hell yes vote. "Initiate any combo, after the second hit press down for one frame, wait nine frames then press forward+Y. " What sense does this make? The move isn't accessible because you don't have enough red crystals, and yet, you move your controller correctly and you execute the move. What the.... :)

Thank you all guys. @ FODA I was fighting against the Zombie Vampire when I found this trick (the palm attack), but I don't have a clue why it work this way. @ mklip2001 That part of the fight (bat form of Nosferatu) is very hard to optimize, that was the only way I found to inflict more damage on him. @ XYZ Never played it before, but I'll check it out! edit: I've played it a little bit yesterday, and here's my first thoughts: The game is interesting, but pretty much like Top Gear 2, it have a lot of lag, sometimes (most of the time) it only accept input every other frame, what makes it difficult to have precise movements. It also have a lot of unavoidable enemies, so, due to those two things I think it would make for an incredibly long (maybe boring?) run. It may be just a bad first impression, so I'll play it to the end to be sure.

@Dooty: The overall quality and entertainment is higher than the currently published movie's, though it appears to me that some boss fight s could be done faster with better manipulations and even strategies. For instance, could you use more non-knocking-over combos on some bosses to reduce the amount of time waiting for them to get up?
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do

Unfortunately no, some bosses will be knocked down regardless of the combo you use. Here's some memory addresses that I used during the creation of the run to find the best attacks:
7E007C, 2u = X speed
7E118F, 1u = Boss health
7E11A9, 1u = Orangutan 1
7E11AB, 1u = Orangutan 2
7E11AD, 1u = Zombie's head
The most effective attack is the Power Punch (palm attack), but it is useless against the Zombie's head, it also can't be used in front of Nosferatu. edit: oh, and there's some bosses that will change his form during the fight, like the Ghost and it can't be avoided. Unless there's some other hidden combo that causes more damage, I think it's the fastest way to finish them off.

An enormous improvement on a run that had been tackled by other excellent TAS'ers in the past. Very entertaining to watch too, and the glitches were awesome. Obvious yes vote.

Thanks for the HD encode, feos! Very nice TAS! I liked the improved boss fights and the fall through floor glitches. I found this less repetitive and more entertaining than the published run. (Yes vote, but the run's been accepted anyway so it doesn't really matter.)

The subtitles should be shifted a little bit lower and a little bit more to the left, so they don't cover the black borders.
