Mutant League Hockey is a very violent sports game. It is just like ice hockey, but there are traps on the arena, and the players are skeletons, trolls or even robots – with weapons. If too many players are killed from a team, the team must forfeit. It is the fastest method for ending the game. This TAS attempts to reach the forfeit screen as quickly as possible.

Game Objectives

  • Emulator: Gens 11b
  • Aims for fastest time
  • 2-player run
  • Genre: Sports
  • Kill count: 19

Game Settings

There are a few options in the main menu. Different choices may or may not save time.

Teams

I didn't change the teams, so by default the computer player gets the worst team and the human player gets the best team.

Controllers

I set my team to have 2 controllers, to save time.

Period length

This has no effect on the run, so I didn't change it. In this TAS, the in-game timer stops at 4:02.

Stadium

I didn't change this either. There is a possibility that some other stadium with random traps might produce a faster run, but maybe not.

Penalties

Default is off and I didn't change it. Penalties would be avoided anyway.

Reserves

Default is off and I didn't change it. It would allow calling a timeout for switching the players during the game, but it would not save time.

Death index

This changes the damage output of all mutants. I set it to maximum.

Screenshots

FRAME WAR!

The hardest aspects of the run are random mutant movements and offscreen action. Also, dead mutants on ice turn into obstacles, so moving around without tripping is difficult. I bet you can't beat my time, though.
Here's RAM watch for opponent hit points, anyway: [dead link removed]

feos: I played Bones Justice & Slayer action figures in my childhood, so added YouTube module for teh bones justice!!!
FractalFusion: Note: The two screenshots above with dialog in them are modified and are not part of the original game.

DarkKobold: Claimed

DarkKobold: Much like fighting games, sports games should generally not just aim for fastest completion, but instead show multiple oddities and glitches from the engine. Examples include [1039] NES Tecmo Super Bowl "playaround" by adelikat in 11:05.02, [1118] NES R.B.I. Baseball "playaround" by adelikat in 04:28.79, and [1438] SNES International Superstar Soccer Deluxe "playaround" by Marcokarty in 15:24.38. While this movie demonstrates an oddity, i.e. that you can beat the other team to death, that is actually a part of the gameplay itself. Thus, this TAS really doesn't live up to the standards set by other sports TASes on the site. Rejecting.
feos: Restored screenshots.
feos: Unrejecting, and changing the branch to tell the in-game mode.

feos: Claiming for judging.
feos: Accepting as explained in this post. This movie reaches the full ending for this mode.
The other submission could have competed for a similar goal while aiming for shortest input, but a missing ending scene that you have to explicitly skip to makes it questionable. Also we don't have a separate goal in Standard for aiming for shortest input, it's just the author's creative decision. And in Alternative, the run has to be entertaining, which is also questionable for several minutes of AI doing the same thing.

Meh vote... I mean it was fast and all... but dead boring to be perfectly honest. It lost its amusement value after the 3rd or 4th kill. If I wanted to see carnage, lots of deaths and quick with some good entertainment? I'd watch someone play Exidy's Death Race. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

It's fairly obvious to me that the game isn't supposed to end this quickly, and isn't supposed to end in this fashion. There may or may not be a lot of technical grunt work that needed to be done to get it to reach that point, but it *looks* impressive, and is good for a(n admittedly cheap) laugh. So, I will now cause the universe to end by voting Yes on one of Aqfaq's submissions.

I was a big fan of the Mutant League games back in the day. The only Genesis game I owned was Mutant League Hockey. So thanks for this TAS. I apparently can't vote (not enough posts, I guess), but it would be a Yes. It's neat seeing a forfeit so quickly.

It's an option, yes, but not the ultimate goal of the game. The game has varying levels of death, from zero deaths up to level 5 - Annihilation (which this TAS used). If you play with no deaths and penalties on, it's essentially NHL '94 with a monster theme.

I just spontaneously converted to every major religion, proved that P=NP, and turned a pile of lead into gold at the same time.

There was recently an amazing series of ~5 obsoletions of (and a bit of forum drama around) the "Baby Moses" subgame in the game Bible Adventures, also originally submitted by Aqfaq, culminating in its publication. At first, most people thought the run was a joke, since the game is so uninteresting, but after a number of TASers took the initial run and broke the hell out of it, it was deemed good enough.

Shouldn't TASes always use the hardest difficulty, unless there's a good reason not to? (Or would it make any difference in this case?)

wouldn't just the slaughter get longer, killing the fast paced entertainement or is there more moves to show ?

Sorry, my mistake. I edited the movie after taking the screenshots and didn't notice the text had changed.

Strangely, the first time I watched this it did nothing for me, but the 2nd time I found it very amusing. Yes from me, keep up the good work Aqfaq

To be honest, I was not very entertained by this run but I do appreciate the skill involved... voted Meh.

This would have been better if you'd just murdered them during the course of playing the match instead of gatecamping them. Voting NO.

Yeah, but what does it mean in this game?

It means that, even if a run of a genuinely shitty game such as Bible Adventures managed to get published, this is a no-brainer in comparison.

That doesn't even remotely answer my question. Was the screenshot doctored or does the coach inside the game actually talk about Baby Moses?

Look at what FractalFusion said at the bottom of the submission text.

I think there IS a good reason in this case ... if you do the opposite, and you even touch the oponents, then your guys die instantly ... =P

No, really, what does Baby Moses mean in the context of this game? Why would they mention it? Is it an expression? A religion joke? The name of a player in the team? o_o EDIT: Ok, I understood now :þ

Well, harder difficulty usually means that it's harder, and hence takes longer. So what? You are dismissing it before even seeing it.

Baby Moses was comical, absurd, fun, and had a lot of crazy glitches along the way. This is just overly violent and disturbing. The background sound effects are ear grating, the graphics are crude, and I am not entertained nor impressed by the run's technical ability. This has offended every applicable sense of mine, and I am worse off for having watched it. Voting no for the first time ever.

That's what makes it funny, duh. Unless you're being sarcastic, in which case, well played.
