The Brood, an ancient race of dragons, is all but extinct. Their power was so strong that they had to be killed. A, the last one of the Brood, is awaken after 400 years and he wants to know more about his people.
Well aware of his fearful power, A uses it until he becomes strong enough to rely on his physical power. After which he manipulates luck to an indecent extent, using frame-by-frame advance to pulverize his foes, and even the final boss. It may be a little anti-climactic, but it's much quicker this way

So, this is my first PSX submission. This was also the very first PSX RPG I ever played. Although not as interesting as BOF 2, BOF 3 is still a good game, with interesting plot twists, a good soundtrack and customizable characters through masters (although only onw, Bunyan, is shown).
The speedrun can be accelerated through many things :
  • Althought fights can't be totally avoided, they can be greatly delayed. For some reason, walking along the edge of the screen keeps the monsters away. Also, in very narrow corridors, using the defense stance keeps the party from engaging combat (is it a glitch?). Finally, starting to walk one frame before a combat would otherwise occur delays the combat. Sometimes, the party can start running again without fighting. This explains the sometimes weird walking patterns I sometimes take
  • Although A (Ryu) is a dragon, he never uses his power after getting his revenge on Balio and Sunder. Instead, he uses Super Combo, a technic taught by his master Bunyan (who makes A a killing machine with higher attack). Normally, the most skilled players would be able to press 7-10 buttons one after the other in order to attack foes. But thanks to frame-to-frame advance, the skill can be pushed to its limit (32 hits). When the button is pressed influences the amount of damage
  • As mention above, barely any dragon power is ever used. Only one optional gene, thorn, is picked up.
  • Only 3-4 weapons are ever bought. The others are found/stolen
  • Healing is used only once
  • It's minor, but since Peco doesn't speak much, he is used is some occasions (Steel Beach, Angel Tower) to diminish the amount of dialogue
  • Unuseful characters are killed as much as possible, so that Momo can get might and so that A can be as strong as possible. He is helped with ivory dice, which doubles the experience earned in a battle (hence the 60 k experience against dragon lord)

Highlights of the game

  • Nue 1 : for the first fight, I only needed to do about 120 damage. Critical hits from Rei do the trick
  •  Nue 2 : Although Rei dies, I was able to finish the fight in three rounds
  • Pooch : I hate that dog. I was able to finish it in 4 rounds, but with great misery since only Rei does decent damage
  • Rocky : The rooster was much easier. His jump attack can do very little damage, which helped Rei resist the attacks
  • Torast : Teepo is quite strong! Down in 3 rounds and 2 critical attacks
  • Kassen : Ghosts are weak against holy magic - including healing magic
  • Galtel : He only casts weakening spells, so he goes down easily
  • Dosken : I don't know if it's a glitch, but a holy attack against him make him cast heal on our party
  • Amalgam : He had to die before the 5th round, in which he always casts astral warp. A's death was convenient; one more level under Bunyan
Bunyan is the only necessary master in the game. He gives better attack, defense and HP. It's all that A needs.
  • Mutant : plants are weak against fire. Which is why Momo does so much damage (and A barely needs to do any!)
  • Dodai : Momo had to start the fight. Her ice chrysm makes a lot of damage. Also, she learns blind (for later) and double blow to speed up the fight. When the Dodai is almost done, A comes in, uses the Ivory dice from the Tower and doubles his level!
  • Emitai : It was quite a lucky fight. Dragonned A countered a few times against the golems which sped up the fight.
  • Bullies : counters are quite useful
  • Stallion : three dragon strikes and it's out! I was able to do it thanks to Garr's Titan belt (which he traded for the soul gem)
  • Zig : Since it's a speedrun, Beyd only needed HP to survive Zig's lucky strike. When he did, a lucky strike of my own took care of Zig
In the lighthouse, I took advantage of the defense formation. And for ALL after mentionned fight, monsters are down using Super Combo. Without exception
  • Gazer : blinding it doubled the experience yield
  • Dolphin : a lucky fight. In my previous tries, i wasn't able to kill it one the first round
  • Gisshan et al. : since Gisshan defended so much, I took care of the dragons first.
I took advantage of the (apparently) famous Angel Tower glitch. Using a normal formation, the whole party warps on a block leading to the bottom of the tower, saving at least 2-3 minutes
  • Garr : he's quickly history
  • Dragon zombie : undeads are weak against fire (flare sword, bought in Urkan Tapa)
  • Weretiger : unlike what my speedrun FAQ said, Rei can be down with as little as 450 hp
  • Mikba : Since he has some resistance to fire, I had to switch swords. But he's easy nonetheless
  • Huge slug : Another monster weak against fire
  • Shroom : neutral against fire, but still easy
The defense formation is most useful in the Tidal cave. I only fought once!! But for that, I had to walk alongside the walls
  • Gaist : Another sword switch against this fire demon. The torches are annoying, but killing them would have taken time
For the rope pulling mini-game, I think frame-by-frame advance helped
  • Angler : Although it's a fish, tis strong against electricity. And for those who followed the run, using super combo takes about as many frames as with Aura!
Riding the boat can be frustrating. Even when the boat isn't moving - but the screen show it - the engine still heats up. For the shisu, only one sprig of horseradish is necessary. And the length of the fish doesn't matter. In the Black Ship, for some reason, the Booster Counter took 2000 frames more than my tryouts
  • Ammonites : the barbarossa (bought is junk town) is lightning-based, which is useful against fish
  • Elder : he takes care of the other, I take care of him
For the crossing of the desert, I realized that it was a speedrun. So I didn't drink water of rested during the day (don't try this at home, kids).
  • Manmo : If I didn,t kill it on the first try, it would have countered my attack
  • Chimera : I miraculously killed it without using last resort
  • Arwan : To facilitate the next fight, I needed to avoid its attack
  • Dragon Lord : Dragons are weak against the dragon sword. I used my two last ivory dice, boosting me to level 37
  • Nues : I wished I could have countered every time...
  • Mikbas : 3 seconds shorter without the dragon sword (fire based)
  • Myria : I was thanfully lucky to withstand Myria's attack on last resort.
Possible improvement : Better luck during fights, try to get the gooking sword (which would be used for at most 4 fights), improve enemy encounter (try to get the holy mantle)

Hmm... Focus doubles (or at least, ups 50%) attack. How many of those would I have to fight to raise my level enough to avoid focus? The lavaman trick took well over 3 minutes to do...

I don't remember exactly how much experience a goo titan gives. I haven't played the game in a few years. After looking at the FAQS, it's 660 xp per titan. so x3 I guess 1980 in one sitting, if you use ivory dice (have all 3 party members use it on the same titan) it may work out really well. I'm not sure how much more STR you would need to remove using a last resort or focus though. Was just curious if you tested.

janus, I just want to draw attention to this since it was the last post on the previous page and maybe you missed it. Even if it turns out to be faster, one small oversight half way through an 8 hour run is totally not a problem and I still really enjoyed it.

indeed. PLus subsequent fights might be longer. I tried it at the very beginning; after Nue I had saved 600 frames, which I all lost against Pooch

This is as great as it can be, in my humble opinion. RPGs aren't the best kind of games to TAS, still this Angel Tower glitch was awesome, I didn't know this one. Fights are great, and the graphic quality for a PS game make it really watchable as a movie. Too bad random battles can't be totally avoided, still I'm not sure people who aren't interested into this game would really spend 7 hours to watch it all. Anyway, great game, awesome movie, yes vote.

This is a rather amusing game, with all the jokes and everything. Though I feel there are far too many fetch quests here that really didn't need to be in the game. Anyway, it's too bad about the random encounters. I wish they could all have been skipped. Also, the Desert of Death is really long, though there's nothing you could have done about it. Things I liked: - Super Combo - Angel Tower glitch - pretty much anything related to boss battles - ramming the Black Ship Also, special mention for Peco's running animation, and the "Australian dolphin".

Alright, I finally found enough free time to watch this whole thing. Major major thanks to FerretFaucet for the encoding. The video looked very nice with some occasional sprite errors, but I figured that may have been the emulation's fault. Like BOF2, this was interesting to watch even if you didn't know the game, since the plot was just complex enough. The fights also look great when you see the other two characters decimated but the main character still wins in 1 combo. This is great work, and I'm happy to vote Yes. I was also thinking that when Zig starts driving the ship, it seems appropriate to comment "Zig moves... for great justice."
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) janus, regarding luck manipulation, I noticed that sometimes the character slows down to a walk. I suppose this is to avoid random encounters, but sometimes you end up in a random encounter at the end anyway. I wonder if the walking was necessary. I'll be judging this submission, but it will take me a long time, because I have to verify that it syncs, and no computer that I own is exactly fast. Though, if no one takes the requested screenshots, I'll do it when I play the movie back.

excelent run ! the slow texts allow to folow the story without relaying on frame advance and i never tought that this game would be so funny while i liked BoF 2, i totaly loved this one ( you even get to see some BoF2 characters and i'm sure i missed some) i was surprised to see how fast i watched this long run.... yes vote

I'm no expert on this, but from what I could gather by watching and also reading the submission text, you can't avoid random battles. However, you can space them out. With the slow walking, janus could frequently make it so that no random battle happened in the current room, but a battle happened in the next room. I believe that this ultimately causes there to be fewer battles per room on average. (This would especially be useful if the RNG changes a lot on room transitions.) Not only that, sometimes the party is advanced slightly by the start of a random battle. Notice that when a random battle occurs even after a slow walk, it is frequently triggered around a corner. The rest of the party immediately moves around that corner. I suspect this saves a little walking time. Anyway, that's what I understood from the delays. They looked very carefully planned. Janus, feel free to correct me.

On mount mynerg (?), I was able to skip one battle compared to previous runs; same thing on Yrall Road and the Cave of the Nue (before getting the 200 zenny from the corpse) .Though, if no one takes the requested screenshots, I'll do it when I play the movie back." Three questions: 1) Some of the sprites have garbage pixels on their right edge. Does this happen in the original console, or is this some kind of emulation bug? (This problem doesn't happen in the PSP version, although that's not surprising even if it does in the original PlayStation.) 2) Comparing the background music to the PSP version, it sounds like many of the sound samples are cut short (like they should fade out, but instead they are just cut). Does this also happen in the original console, or is it some kind of emulation problem? 3) How much longer would the run be if the main character's name would have been kept as "Ryu" instead of "A"? Edit: Compare, for example, the music in the TAS from about 1:46:53 forward to this.

When I played this game on ePSXe, those garbage pixels did not exist and the background music sounded like the video you linked to, not the odd result in this run's encode. So I would guess that those are issues with this emulator and/or the plug-ins used with PCSX (assuming that ePSXe does not fix actual game issues, and I doubt it would). The music bug in particular bugs me, but at least it can be ignored for the sake of the TAS. It would be nice if the encode could be re-done if it was possible to get better quality graphics or sound though.

The best sound plugin wasn't used during the encode. There are bound to be sound glitches due to it. Using the best sound plugin causes desync. From my simple test, the desync seemly don't happen often so it may be feasible to re-encode with better sound. Also all lag frames were cut out using the TAS sound plugin during capture, making the movie shorter than it really is. Using the best sound plugin would fix this. I don't think the encoder had tried using the best sound plugin since he probably didn't know about it and the process to fix the desyncs is still somewhat a pain to do. I may do an encode eventually.

I made some lua script over here, that might hopefully help you. Here the general idea about how it work out. First, there should be a bofCreateSaveState.lua, that pretty much produce a folder with lot of savestate, where there might be a desynch* . To create the savestate, just run the script with the TAS sound plugin. Once you got the savestate you can use the bofSynchHighQuality.lua script to playback the movie with Eternal sound plugin and kkapture it while running the script. Of course, these script aren't optimized and are quite messy, but feel free look around and edith them. I think that making the encode this way is more conveniant than manually playback thought the movie and kkapture the full movie in ~30 or ~50 parts for about each savestate used and then, merge them altogether. * I had to use 2 other script to produce an unoptimized "frame/checkpoint" list...
