We have similar threads for the X-box 360 and PSX, so why not have a thread for recommendations for PS2 games? Ideally ones that everyone and their mother don't already know about -- there's no real need to recommend Final Fantasy X, God of War, Devil May Cry, and the like. One I'm enjoying quite a bit right now is Warship Gunner 2, which is a naval combat game. The setting, at least so far, is an alt-history WWII in which a fictional Asian nation takes Germany's place in the Axis powers. The combat's pretty fun, and you can scavenge gear from sunk ships, as well as research new technology (e.g. new guns, ship hulls, automated repair systems, torpedos, carried aircraft, etc...), and then kit out your ships just the way you want them.

I'd go with two franchises. beatmania IIDX and Taiko no Tatsujin. These two are two great music games franchises from Japan. Both of them got one game in America and Europe, but they commercially failed in these continents, while they are still very popular in Japan. Both series have a lot of games, on both arcade and consoles. beatmania IIDX has 15 PS2 games while Taiko no Tatsujin has 11. beatmania IIDX, from the creators of Dance Dance Revolution, is supposed to be a DJ simulation game. You play with that kind of controller. The goal is to press the keys and to spin the disc at the right moment to "create" the music you're playing. Here's a video of a moderately hard tune, and here's a video of a tune that is so hard, that you'll have to give up your life to win it, especially on the right side. Taiko no Tatsujin is a Taiko drumming simulation game. You play with these drum controllers. The goal is to hit on the drum or on its edge at the right moment to drum over music. Here's a video of a medium/hard tune, and here's a video of a tune that is, once again, freaking hardcore, especially after 42 seconds. I found both of these series pretty addictive. I especially like IIDX's soundtrack. A downside for these games, is that they are region-locked to Japan, so you'll need either a japanese PS2 or a modded one. Unless you find an out-of-Japan version of these games, if you're lucky. But to be honest, in term of challenge and song selection, I prefer the Japanese versions. That's all I had to say about these games. :)

I really liked Magic Pengel back in the day. Would make for a very interesting TAS I'm sure.

A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

Totaled! / Crashed (USA title / EU title) Rumble Racing. Even though developed by quite well known companies they don't have a lot of love, which is odd because the games are fun if you give them a chance.

Maximo: Ghosts to Glory and Maximo vs. The Army of Zin are hack 'n' slash type games that resemble the Ghosts 'n' Goblins series. I really liked those games, as they are challenging and fun to play and the platforming parts don't seem tacked on. They're also pleasing to the eye.

Gitaroo Man (if you can get your hands on it) was a really fun and REALLY catchy rhythm-action game. Fairly challenging too. Check out some vids of the songs if you get the chance. Also, I really like Stuntman. It's a pretty strange genre, as it's not really racing, but you're usually in some sort of weird vehicle. The premise is that you're a movie stuntman, and you must complete stunt scenes for movies well enough for the clip to be used in the movie. The director shouts instructions at you through each filming. They get really hard. You have some cool vehicles though, including a rickshaw and a snowmobile.

Is Forbidden Siren unknown enough to qualify? To be honest, it's a very acquired taste and has deep flaws in its gameplay, but to some it's a real jewel. And I know that even in its stealth-based slow survival horror gameplay it would make an excellent TAS. This is why.

Imo "Dark Cloud" and "Dark Chronicle aka Dark Cloud 2" are pretty underrated games and deserve to be mentioned here!
