hey just a quick question, i watched hte video, cool stuff
i know about certain rules, i'm just curious about two things... the bombs, dont they do dmg to yourself? and certain quest items (keys, maps, etc) seem to linger visually in the game... anything up with that? i dont feel like reading 17 pages for this, sorry :)
but cool stuff, i was quite amazed to see people actually still did this now. i kinda figured this was pre 2000 stuff :)

oh also, there seems to be alot of redundant fighting for no appearant reason (like, not all the enemies killed etc) in more then one occasion. if you're really going for seconds (and by what i read, you do), you should be able to save some time by not fighting unless its required to open a door or something...

heh, well, nintendo kiddie here, so no argument there, but still...
i didnt even know there were these kind of competitions at all :) well not on this level...
I think speedruns are art too.
I watched the Half-Life speedrun movie and it was very well done in my opinion.
One thing I liked most was that the author provided sightseeing views to important/interesting events while waiting. If the only thing the player cares about is time / beating someone, he wouldn't have done that.

ok, but that didnt really answer my question :\
zelda for the nes has been years literally and i never was able to buy a copy back then, only rented it.
do you get damage from your own bombs, and are items just tossed in the room like that, or is that a hack of some kind?
i believe it is... and thats not meant offensive, just curious.
Nope, nothing is hacked. If you have an emulator, you can download the fmv file (the keypresses), which you can play back with your own emu with your own rom.
You don't take damage from your own bombs in zelda 1.

it was no accusation.
and the items? are they just in the room like that? perhaps i'm just spoiled by the snes and n64 :p ,but i remember you'd have to finish the enemies first, then get the items, key map or whatever...
been practising some more, I didn't realize the importance of randomness in this game until now. I played level 2 a few more times today, and I was able to get it as low as 2:04 from first control to triforce. Right now, I'm working on the later dungeons optimizing the time it takes me to handle those darknuts and wizzrobes. If you want to see the video, I have it here: Legend of Zelda: level 2.
You grabbed the sword too late. When playing on a real NES, you should hold down right as you enter the cave so that you're facing right, and then hold down right and up, and when you start walking you'll go straight towards the sword. That way you don't have to press right to turn at just the right atmoment to grab the sword as early as possible.
After you get some practice in the later levels, do you plan on doing a speed run of the whole game?
thanks for the tip. I finished all my exams this week so I have a lot of time to practice. If I can do the later levels confidently, memorize a decent route, and fine-tune my reflexes, I'll do a speedrun of the whole game. It looks like it's going to take a lot of commitment though, and will probably be the hardest (and longest) speedrun I've ever attempted.
I was also thinking of doing a Zelda speedrun after finishing 2nd quest, but what I really plan on doing is a high speed side-scroller action game speed run like that Megaman Zero 2 video. Its probably going to be a SNES game too.
For Zelda speed run, one of the most important things to think about is money. With the route I use in the video, you can see that I barely manage to afford the arrows by the time I get there, and I also use the gambling game twice, which isn't a good idea in a speed run. This is the fastest route that I can come up with that is also practical for a speed run:
1.L3
2.Up+A
3.L4
4.Up+A
5.30 rupees
6.Blue Candle
7.Up+A
8.L1
9.White Sword
10.L5
11.Up+A
12.Heart Container
13.100 rupees
14.L8
15.Meat
16.L2
17.Whistle to L3
18.100 rupees
19.L7
20.Whistle to L1
21.Arrows
22.L6
23.Magical Sword
24.Whistle to L1
25.L9
-Need 30 rupees before Blue Candle.
With this route, you dont need to worry about gambling or wasting time collecting money in the dungeons (except to raise 30 rupees in L3 and L4). You still need to cope with using wooden sword for L4 though. I HIGHLY recommend you get the Magical Sword for at least L9. In my video, my L9 loses 20 seconds to Michaels L9 just because I didnt have the Magical Sword. In a speed run, it could be double that or more. It only wastes around 30 seconds collecting the one heart container and obtaining the magical sword, so I say its worth it. Also, don't Up+A after getting the sword since it will take away your full health.
thanks a lot Sleepz, that route is very helpful. I'm trying to get as close to your dungeon times as humanly possible. I have your dungeons timed at:
lv3: 1:30 mins, wooden
lv4: 2:08 mins, wooden
lv1: 1:28 mins, wooden
lv5: 2:10 mins, white
lv8: 1:07 mins, white
lv2: 1:00 min, white
lv6: 1:42 mins, white
lv7: 2:22 mins, white
lv9: 4:17 mins, white
I have dungeons 1 and 2 almost mastered; it'll take around 8 hits with the wooden sword to beat Gleeok in lv4, I think I can manage it with quick movements. Stunning enemies and walking through them with the boomerang helps at some parts, do you think it would be worth the detour to get it? I'm playing level 6 now, and clearing rooms with the blue wizzrobes without taking much damage is really difficult. They take around 6 white sword hits so I'm sticking with using bombs, but I have to be careful not to waste any. Same goes for fighting blue darknuts in level 8.
Edit: on second thought, getting the boomerang may not be so useful, even if it is a pure speedrun. It doesn't work on the more difficult enemies, and I could just push the weaker enemies aside with the sword instead of using it. Just means I'll have to practice fighting more...
I think it would be better to just use your sword to hurt and walk through the enemies, or just walk around around them. Getting the boomerang wastes time and also, you will be constantly switching between boomerang and bombs, wasting even more time. You should just keep bombs for button B.
Bombs have the same attack power as magical sword, so they kill the red wizzrobes and darknuts in one blast. One thing to take note is when bombing darknuts, you must drop the bomb perpendicular to their movement. For example, if the darknut is moving up or down, you must drop the bomb to the left or right in order to hurt them. If you drop the bomb left or right, and the darknut is moving left or right, they wont be affected. The darknut will still flash like its hurt, but its actually not injured at all. So if you ever bomb red darknuts, and they dont die, that means you didnt drop perpendicular. This is really important to note for the blue darknuts, since 1 bomb wont kill them, and you wont know if you really injured them or not.
1.L3
2.Up+A
3.L4
4.Up+A
5.30 rupees
6.Blue Candle
7.Up+A
8.L1
I think it would be better to do it this way, since it's a few screens shorter and you would only need to get lucky once in the gambling game. You could also pick up an extra heart container on the way to 1, so you can have the magical sword for level 6 (though if you decide not to get the magical sword then just do Up+A after 4).
1.L3
2.Up+A
3.Gambling game 1x
4.Blue candle
5.L4
6.L1
21.Arrows
22.L6
23.Magical Sword
If you get the heart container on the way to 1, it's better to do this. It's only 1 screen longer and level 6 has a lot of fighting so the magical sword is helpful.
21.Arrows
22.Magical Sword
23.L6
This is sort of unrelated to the current discussion, but I was wondering if there is some trick to getting a fairy after killing the hydra bosses? I can't seem to get anything other than bombs or hearts from them.
Oh, you mean gleeok. As for your question, I don't know. I guess you just have to swing the sword at exactly the right time from exactly the right position.
