This is a 3202-frame improvement over the previous run.
Mole Mania, known as Moguranya (モグラ~ニャ) in Japan, is an action puzzle game. The main character is a mole named Muddy Mole, whose wife and children have been kidnapped by the farmer, Jinbe. Muddy has to go to Jinbe Land and save his family. In the game, the player will solve puzzles by moving a black ball to a gate. However, there are many obstacles and enemies in the way. Therefore the player will dig into ground to find ways around them.

Game objectives

  • Emulator: vba-rerecording-svn-r25-win32
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Uses a game restart sequence
  • Uses warp

About the run

This run skips 6 levels out of 8 by abusing reset glitch. You can unlock the final stage if you reset in the bonus stage of level 1, but you need to beat Kangaroon before abusing the glitch. After resetting, level 1 will be corrupted and take you to a broken map. Then, returning to the level select screen from there will show you a broken score results screen and unlock the final stage.
This time, the run has 3 new tricks. One is canceling movement of coming up from underground, another is new way of entering circles which appear in level 8, the other is to make Funton start jumping quickly by staying underground. When Muddy comes up from ground which is not dug a hole yet, diving into ground and coming up again allows to omit his movement. The second trick is that Muddy starts moving 3 or 4 frames faster after warping, if he enters a circle from square below.

Stage by stage comments

Level 1

With the former new trick I mentioned above, I saved a lot of frames in 1-2, 1-3, 1-9, and 1-11. Different strategy is used in 1-9 besides the new trick, though. 1 frame was saved in 1-5 and 2 frames were saved by lag reduction, but 2 frames slower in 1-7 and 6 frames slower in 1-10 because of increasing lag. Strategies that saved 130 frames in 1-12 are obviously different and notable. Firstly, Muddy threw the black ball to behind him and went to the square where the black ball had been there. He dove into hard ground to make a dinosaur turn back and leap over a hole. This saved two lives and allowed to make use of forced strategy in different place. I lost 101 frames in 1-13 because I picked up an item, surrender. I used it in 1-14 and saved 619 frames. It also saved 6 frames in score result screen because of lower score.

Process of the reset glitch

I refer to the section between level select screen after beating Kangaroon and broken score result screen, as the process where I saved 318 frames. As I used surrender in 1-14, the room was still to be cleared. That brought Muddy to 1-13 when restarting level 1 and saved 226 frames. Using surrender also saved 6 frames in broken result screen due to lower score. 32 frames were saved by using the new trick when Muddy got out of underground path. And 54 frames were saved due to better timing to reset.

Level 8

While Muddy is waiting, lag can be reduced by pressing B when he can hold nothing, or diving into pavement. Lag reduction saved several frames in every stage except for 8-8. I saved 2 frames in 8-1 and saved 48 frames in 8-6 by just reducing lag. I saved 266 frames in 8-5 and saved 144 frames in 8-7 with better luck manipulation. I saved 85 frames in 8-2 because I beat Sundes with 2 hits that are less than the previous run. I saved 558 frames in 8-3 by staying underground to make Funton start jumping quickly. I saved 873 frames in 8-4 because I succeeded in hitting Mad Wrencher twice in the second wave. And I saved 52 frames with different strategies.

  • Yotchan, for demonstrating the reset glitch.

klmz: As far as we can see, this is polished better that the currently published movie. Accepted as an improvement to it.

Brandon: Publication underway.

jesus, you seriously love TASing a lot of the strategy looked like it made no sense, but that's probably me not understanding it on the first watch, the run was entertaining enough and it's an improvement so I vote yes

An improvement of an existing submission, of course it is a yes vote. But I would rather have seen a full game run.

I love that mole. Very entertaining, and beats the published run with the help of a few new glitches, so an easy yes vote!
Oh, play it cool. Play it cool. Here come the space cops.

WOW! Seriously, as someone who knows this game, I can say this is incredible. The published movie was quite fast, certainly, but most of its surprise was the reset glitch. This time, the gameplay is really clever. Nice job finding the timesaver when you dig up new holes especially; that's the kind of thing that makes me feel dumb for not thinking of it. The strategies for bosses 2, 4, and 7 are really impressive. Seriously, you looked like luck pretty much went perfectly for you with boss 7 in particular. Nice job also with the improvements on boss 3 and 6; I'm surprised you only took damage once on boss 6. All this adds up to a Yes vote, and more. Great job! Count me in for wanting a full run of the game without the reset glitch (though I don't really care if it's 100% or not).
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:

Nice improvement! This looks a lot better than the currently published run (by which I mean more optimized and more entertaining). And you kept the "TAS" tunnel! Yes vote.

Hey guys, got an HD encode for you. Would have had it a lot sooner, but I'm out of town and only have a laptop that occasionally has internet. I have an SD and a 512 prepared for when I get back from this shit. Without further ado: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgHCmzz6vj0

Might as well claim this. The encodes seem to be under control, and NitroGenesis has provided the following optimized screenshot: Will keep in contact with NitroGenesis regarding his encode. He and FerretFaucet are using my script, so this run will inevitably have awesome encodes. =P
