Xavier:

Genosha, a little known island where mutants are imprisoned by a brutal army. X-Men, you must depart for Genosha and free our fellow mutants!

Game Objectives

  • Emulator used: Snes9x 1.43 v17 svn146
  • Takes no damage
  • Manipulates luck

Dooty:

This run improves the current published run by 49.60 seconds or 2976 frames. The improvement comes from small optimizations, better boss fights and route changes. A small amount of time was also saved on the menus, pressing start sooner. The "slide off of a ledge" trick was improved with the "let go directions" trick: when falling off of a ledge during a slide, you can maintain the sliding speed a little longer if you don't hold any directions.

Xavier:

Hear me, my X-Men! Your mission is to invade the island of Genosha. By splitting up, we can more effectively disperse these enemy forces.

Cyclops' Stage

Xavier:

Cyclops will intercept and destroy the Genoshan army train transport.

Dooty:

It's faster to kill the Genoshans one by one in the "beat 'em up" sections, and the "fight" with the train was improved with lag reduction. 275 frames faster.

Psylocke's Stage

Xavier:

Psylocke shall strike at the main base, drawing the Genoshans' fire away from the others.

Dooty:

A new strategy on the midboss and on the boss fight saved quite some time on Psylocke's stage, as did the "let go directions" trick. 631 frames faster.

Wolverine's Stage

Xavier:

Wolverine shall gain access into the sentinel factory, insuring that all Sentines being manufactured are destroyed.

Dooty:

Almost no changes in the strategy on this stage, just small optimizations on the "beat 'em up" section and a better midboss fight. 73 frames faster.

Gambit's Stage

Xavier:

While Psylocke distracts the Genoshans, Gambit will attack the soldier's harbor base.

Dooty:

Here is where I found the "let go directions" trick, what forced me to redo the previous stages from scratch. 313 frames faster.

Beast's Stage

Xavier:

Finally, Beast shall gain entry to the central computer and extract all information on the whereabouts of the captured mutants.

Dooty:

While I was doing this run, Randil posted a wip with a really good strategy to beat this stage, I just improved it a little further. 139 frames faster.

Forest

Xavier:

Mission completed, my X-Men! According to the computer records we've obtained, mutants are being forced into labor, in a mine neighboring a large forest.

Dooty:

Almost the same strategy as in the current published run, just small optimizations here and there, thats all. 184 frames faster.

Tusk

Xavier:

Thanks to you, X-Men, we know the location of the Genoshans' prison. The camp is guarded by Tusk and his Tuskettes, so remain on your guard!

Dooty:

Despite being a really small stage, I spent a lot of redoes here to save a minuscule amount of time, oh well... 188 frames faster.

Apocalypse

Apocalypse:

Unidentified mutants?!? Ahh, this must be the vaunted X-Men, come to rescue their fellow mutants!

Dooty:

Some sections of the current published run like the first climbing part, are faster than my run, but I couldn't repruduce them due to subpixels. 198 frames faster.

Omega Red

Xavier:

Job well done, X-Men! You must prepare for the coming battle with Magneto. Test your skills against Omega Red, X-Men!

Dooty:

Nibelung suggested to finish this fight in just one combo, I just managed to do this. 157 frames faster.

Juggernaut

Xavier:

Job well done! One final test, X-Men. Test your skills against Juggernaut!

Dooty:

Nothing much new here, just less hits to beat him, thus, saving some frames. 162 frames faster.

Exodus

Magneto:

Xavier's children are no doubt coming to Avalon. They must be taught who their true master is.

Dooty:

I managed to manipulate Exodus so I could initiate my combo sooner, and like on the Omega Red fight, I finished him in just one combo. 447 frames faster.

Magneto

Magneto:

I cannot be defeated! I am the true leader of all mutant kind! Soon the world shall tremble before my might, and not even YOU will be able to save it!

Dooty:

Better manipulation of Magneto, and a better use of the platforms saved quite some time here, I wonder if it's possible to beat him in one combo though. 200 frames faster.

Suggested Screenshot:

frame 39183.

Useful Memory Address

7E0C1A, 2s X speed.

Special Thanks to

Nibelung, most of his strategies can be seeing in this run. Randil, for his memory addresses and Beast's stage strategy.

DarkKobold: Nice improvement to the pub'd movie, accepting!
OmnipotentEntity: Processing.

Wow, Another Dooty submission! I'll get to watching this in a bit. Do you plan on also doing Marvel Super Heroes for the SNES. Its basically just like this except with other Marvel Characters. Theres already an old TAS of the first few stages by SDR: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7suMqZbOmNw Looking foward to some entertaining bits when I get this set up. EDIT: Just saw it. Nice work! The different characters sure mix up the gameplay. Yes Vote. Here is Dooty's recommended screenshot: And here are some of mine:

Pretty good job! The changes aren't all that noticeable to me, but it's a nice run. Yes vote, and I also like Dooty's suggested screenshot. Is anyone planning on improving the X-Men 2: Clone Wars run?
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Thank you guys. I was thinking to move to another emulator, like PCSX, but since the games that I want to TAS are not very well emulated yet, I'll stick to the Snes9X a bit longer.

It's a really good game, I remember it was even compared with some PlayStation games back then. I'll give it a try, if there's no one else doing it already of course.

Same as the above answer, except the comparison with PlayStation games...

Is Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee among those games? If that is the case, what isn't emulated properly?

Yes it is, in Abe's Oddysse, unless you use an old plugin the graphics are corrupted. I'm testing it with PSXJim, but I don't know how to change the plugins in this emulator.
