The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past in 4:17
This is something I whipped up really quickly to test Up+Down on nitsuja's new version of SNES9X. I abuse a glitch in Hyrule Castle then head north to victory. 2/3 of the run is unavoidable text.
-Abuses glitch.
-Takes no Damage.
-Requires the Up+Down & Left+Right enabled version of SNES9X
-Use WIP Timing.

Yes, you can. I've done it recently with an unmodded controller, but you have to have popeye arms.

I voted no. Now, I mean no in the nicest possible way I can ever reject a run. It's fast, well-played and all-around excellent under the conditions set. Problem is I don't think this is a completion of the game by any meaningful definition of completion and I don't find it at all entertaining to watch. There's no impressive plays, displays of faux skill, etc; just a rather absurd glitch. To me, that's not enough merit. *Crosses fingers, hopes to avoid attracting too much ire*

yeah, I tend to agree. There isn't much display of 'superhuman' skills in this movie. No display of luck manipulation. All it shows is a neat glitch. Still I vote yes to have it published, but in a seperate category, 'glitched Zelda AlttP run'. (Where other 2 categories would be fastest completion, and fastest 100%.

Definitely a cheap way to beat the game since you just glitchwarp from start to end, but going through various rooms' walls and ending up past Ganon was pretty funny. Also, after watching the run, if you reset the game and play, you'll end up in the Dark World and see enemies from the Light World (all messed up), still with the rain too, but there isn't much you can do there as a rabbit ... *votes Yes*

Or you can take the controller apart, to push up/down that way. Alternatively, modify the controller in some way, like adding a button to push up/down at the same time. Left/Right, Up/Down is also used by some programmers as entry to debugging/diagnostic code as well, since most normal users will not be able to push opposite directions at the same time.

Is this really the best glitch route? Ive been looking at the pertinent maps at http://brightrain.aerifal.cx/~dermot/mapzelda3.html which are http://brightrain.aerifal.cx/~dermot/map/zelda3/rooms/rooms00.png http://brightrain.aerifal.cx/~dermot/map/zelda3/rooms/rooms04.png These are the rooms as they are laid out on the rom. I see you go straight up through all the rooms but if you can move through walls cant you go up and right towards the stairwell to the 1st basement and then just double back and go directly into the gannon room? If you look on the map that room is right next to the destination and seems like it would be quicker. Is there something about the glitch that wont work right?

wow looks good idea, but depend if theres L + R let you warp to the left.. (edit - i just tried, when u do L + R, Link face right but walk left, screen scrolls to the right)

Yes, If you glitch from there you'll glitch to the room directly to the right of that one. Unfortunately this room as a doorway leading left, so you can't glitch into the wall.

Im not sure of the specifics of the glitch but the video shows link facing down and walk up but the screen scrolls down so it sounds like you are still starting it correctly. EDIT Should of refreshed. Alright OMNI... I guess there isnt much to say about this video other than its funny how much work you are putting into your full run while this is technically faster ;-) Keep up the great work with the full!

Hi, The glitch you're using in this video (called Up/Down Exploration Glitch (UDEG) on the GameFAQs boards) is not really optimal for this run. We now know a more efficient version that is done by pressing all four directions (this makes Link move up-left while looking down) and walking through a staircase in that way (a staircase inside a room, not between two levels). This glitch can be done on the same room of Hyrule Castle (left of the main entrance) and is done faster than the UDEG, and takes you directly to the same room under the floor (instead of taking you to the room south of it). I should save a few seconds (which count if you're making a run of about 3 minutes). Also this other glitch should be possible to do in the room of the underground (leading to Princess Zelda's cell) as suggested by someone but I'm not sure it would save time since the time it takes to get there might compensate...

Hello, and thanks. I'm kinda iffy on updating this run. Mostly because I want to concentrate on the full run. If anyone else wants to implement it fell free to. Plus I didn't put any work into this run at all. And I really didn't expect it to be published. If anyone else wants a go at it, hey, free publish. I tested out the glitch, it's performed by going down the stairs with all four directions held, then going back up them, you should glitch through the last step. Happy Running.

Yep, that's how you do it on a stair that goes down when moving north. On a stair that goes up when moving north, you automatically move through the stair the first time and end up under the floor. There's more on the exploration glitches in my FAQ (see www.gamefaqs.com , Alttp then the FAQs) if you want to use some in the other run, but I don't think using glitches is really a good idea (plenty of things can be skipped even if you consider that completing the game is achieved by fighting and defeating Ganon). The STEG (version on the stairs) has not yet been included in the FAQ because it's more recent than the other variants. Good luck on the full run.

I myself got the up + down glitch to work also and beat the game under 5 mins. I just took a part a snes controller and it worked. So it is possible to do this glitch without the emulator. It's cool that you guys found this out so thanx.

Hmm let me say ,, this was , well when i saw this movie i couldnt belive my eyes Its very incredible but also very boring ,, since i wanted to c someone 100% completing fast ,, But um it was cool to "Moonwalk" Clip trough wall or what u call it ;) so are u saying its just Up+Down or Left+Right at the same time ? and after that what direction em i suppose to push? and do i just hold it down until i c the triforce? Does this work on the Real Snes Console? Will there Ever be a "Real" Completing of Zelda A link to the past?

It's possible. But hard. It's easier if you remove the cover, but it's not absolutely neccesary. According to someone here. I don't remember who.

it was me who said to open the controller cover, truncated if you push the d-pad too hard it may break :S theres a central pin sort of thing to avoid both directions being pushed at same time
