http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/ I was wondering if it would be an easy task to implant recording/re-recording in this program. Would be awesome since then we can start to run PC games. :)

does anyone know how to run Privateer on a machine not running DOS natively?
If you are talking about the original version, I don't know if there is any emulation-based method, though you could try using a DOS boot disk. However, Privateer has been recently remade: http://priv.solsector.net/ Also, I have to say this concept of emulating and recording DOS programs is fascinating, it would be interesting to see a re-recording emulator for this.

Indeed. As I said before, I would kill to see Wolfenstein and Spear of Destiny runs, as I found them to be much much harder than the Doom series. Mainly due to those damn mutants...Spear was especially bad about this, always sticking them in mazes where you have no way of knowing where the hell they are. -Josh

The thing I always found painful about Wolfenstein was no map--which is why I like how Blake Stone improved on the engine by having that, along with going back to previous floors, loads of extra interactivity, etc. I agree about Commander Keen and Duke Nukem 1, as well...Bio Menace, Rise of the Triad, and Duke Nukem II would be especially awesome speedruns.

That's great! I wonder when the "next version" that post refers to will come out. I personally look forward to runs of Jetpack, Night Raid, and the Mega Man games. Well, the Night Raid one would just consist of perfect shots, since I'm pretty sure the planes come in a predefined manner, but I'm wondering what the high score would be on that game if you destroyed the enemies as quickly as possible and didn't waste any shots.

Erm.. Will that only output as an image range or something? Or can we use it to implant avi support with re-recording? Also.. Will sound be added to that output feature?

I have created a tool-assisted speedrun of Star Control II. It is a true TAS in the sense that savestates, rerecording and frame advance were used. The savestate stores the emulated system RAM, CPU status, other hardware status, open files, and a change list to actual filesystem. It also forces calls to time() to return 0 (i.e. 1.1.1970 0:0:0 GMT) and disables all kind of speed throttlings. Theoretically the system could be used to TAS other games as well. However, I have written it only by the "lowest fence" principle, i.e. I only made sure the things required by SC2 are working. Other games might need other things (to be saved in a savestate) that I didn't handle. I will be posting the details later; right now I'm patching in AVI support. I'm not even sure about the movie length; the "frame" measure here is an interval of cpu emulation calls... But it seems to be about 8 fps. (Rendering fps is 70, though.) It can be adjusted arbitrarily. EDIT: Branched this thread into a new one to provide a clear point where patches are found. Locking this thread.
