D&D - Warriors of the Eternal Sun

THE GAME (From Wikipedia, paraphrased and quoted):
As the goblin army makes their last push into Duke Barrik’s castle, the sky is ripped open and both armies are sucked into the void. Duke Barrik's castle is transported to a valley enclosed with impossibly tall cliffs and a brilliant red sun overhead (the 'Eternal Sun' of the title). The Duke requests that the four player characters explore this strange environment in order to find allies.
The player controls a party of four characters. There are three distinct styles of gameplay: Outside Adventure mode, Outside Combat mode, and Dungeon mode.
Outside mode is basically just walking around on the world map. You can encounter monsters and when you do, it transitions into outside combat mode which is characterized as turn based with overhead view. Dungeon mode is real-time combat with monsters roaming and fighting at will.
LUCK MANIPULATION:
When traversing the overworld, the party will make erratic movements to either save time walking or to manipulate random encounters. It wasn’t until late in the run that I realized how I was influencing random encounters. If I had known at the beginning I probably could have saved 200-400 frames used running out of the way.
In the dungeon mode, I do my best to run, shoot, blast, and swing my way to meet the objectives for the best times possible.
For combat, I use the Wand of lightning as the primary kill weapon throughout the entire run. Due to luck manipulation, it never runs out of charges. The Wand of healing is used to heal me a few times, but is mostly used a method of input manipulation.
Input manipulation in this game is ridiculously hard. The only way to affect the next move in a battle is based upon the last move in battle. This means for each battle, the last command in the previous battle will affect what happens in the next – you can’t do something between battles to affect combat without bringing up menu or something (too time consuming for TAS). This was the hardest part of the run as I would sometimes have to fight several battles per rerecord to make sure I would make the best time and still keep my Wand of lightning.
Furthermore, in battle, when confronted with enemies, you have three options with which to manipulate the input: A slot, B slot, or pass character (button C). That’s it. I’ve tested every possible means of changing the combat using controller input and found nothing else that will work. So if one of those three won’t change what happens in the next character’s turn, then I’m pretty much out of luck.
THE TAS:
After careful research and testing, I’ve found the bare minimum requirements to beat this game with fastest possible time.
Use default party.
Talk to Marmillian. He will issue the Duke’s request for allies.
Get some items: Buy four slings from weapon store. Pick up Wand of healing in hidden basement behind Temple. Pick up Wand of lightning in hidden laboratory inside Magic shop. Equip those items.
Go to Beastman caves. On the way, stop and slay a Red Dragon getting a few levels. Then pick up all the treasure he leaves providing some great weapons and armor to help in the game (This is the only thing I did that was not required for completion, but was extremely helpful since my party needed the hitpoints and armor for later trials.)
In the Beastman caves a door covered in vines is found. The game informs that Marmillian may help. Go back and talk to Marmillian. He will give a Withered vine that repels vines.
Go back to Beastman caves and enter vine covered door and go all the way to the back of the caves where the door is (this door leads to a place called Malpheggi Swamp which I found is not necessary to complete the game.) On the wall right next to the door is a combination needed for the next cave.
Leave Beastman caves and go east to Azcan caves. Exit Azcan caves and fight the only mandatory outside battle atop the pyramid. Go through pyramid and retrieve four Rings of fire protection.
Exit pyramid, go back through cave, go all the way west, cross fire bridge, enter Oltec tradeway.
Go all the way through Oltec cave to find Oltec trader who agrees to be allies, giving you a medallion, and completing the Duke’s quest.
As you return to town, everyone has gone crazy and destroyed the place. Marmillian explains that there is a creature underneath the valley driving everyone insane. He gives you a scroll to read to summon Ka who will destroy the Burrower.
Go through shortcut in graveyard and exit in swamp. Enter swamp cave and go to the city of Dark Elves. Go through the city into the very bottom cavern where the Burrower is. Read the scroll and watch the best live action cinema ever created!

Flygon: Removed redundant "Fastest Time" branch (Due to branch being automatically assumed for unbranched movies anyway) and expanded game name to its full name. Of course, an encode will be coming up.

That was brilliant... mostly boring, but brilliant none the less. Very well optimized. A strong Yes vote on a technical level, not so much for entertainment... I'll encode this in HD and SD, but it'll take a while. This is a large movie. Just a quick question though, why isn't your name Jesus Nut? Heh.

The term may have come from the idea that, if the Jesus pin were to fail in flight, the helicopter would detach from the rotors and the only thing left for the crew to do would be to pray to Jesus.- Wiki link That's hilarious! I just love Jesus though if you were seriously asking. Thanks for the comment about the movie. I appreciate it. As far as the boring part goes, it's all the overworld walking. Couldn't help it, I made it as quick as possible.

A yes as far as the actual TASing is concerned, a for the lack of entertainment value. As much as the run is well-executed, there is too much traveling going on and the battles aren't action-filled enough to warrant that. Voting meh.

Hmm. I'm kind of confused here. I thought people voted whether the movie deserved to be published...by the TASing - not the entertainment. I thought we voted numerically on entertainment/technical stuff after it was published. I put a lot of hard work into this run and I find it EXTREMELY unlikely anyone will be able to beat it without finding some kind of glitch (good luck). For some reason I feel like people are voting based on the GAME rather than the TAS. It's a fastest time completion. Maybe I had the wrong impression about how things work on this site (love watching the movies though.) And lastly, thanks for encoding the movie and putting on YouTube. That's pretty awesome.

A submission undergoes a judging procedure where a judge decides wheter it is published or not, by judging the entertainment value of the run and the technical quality of the run. He bases this decision on the judge guidelines, his personal opinion and the votes of other users, which he can actually disregard completely, if he thinks that's necessary. So to clear up your confusion, people here vote yes if they were entertained and if they think the run is technically good. The ratings have nothing to do with the judging process.

There have been numerous huge arguments over whether we should accept runs of bad games, where "bad" means "even a technically proficient TAS can't make the run interesting to watch." They can be compared to the Wikipedia notability requirement -- some people feel that every run that is well-made will be entertaining to somebody (and/or they're easily amused), and thus every well-made run should be published. The majority, at the moment, feels that only sufficiently entertaining runs should be published. They may recognize the skill and effort involved in making the TAS, but they don't feel it should be on the site. I'm intentionally avoiding providing arguments for either side (or even identifying myself with a specific side), largely because I don't want to rehash that particular argument again. It tends to create nothing beyond hot air.

Boring. It's just walking 60 % of the time and 40 % running in dungeons the rest of the time. While that is the more interesting part, it is still quite boring.

While this is true for most movies, It doesnt really apply to RPGs like this. So the way a true TAS of these types of games can be considered amazing is through how much manipulation and how optimized the planning is. This is shown here with ease.

Just my personal opinion, I'd clump this with Shining in the Darkness... a really slaggy and slow watch, but it follows Sonikkustar's principle perfectly. It's amazing in manipulation and optimized planning. Similarly, I think Dungeons and Dragons is under the same umbrella.

Flygon mentioned what I was going to say: Shining In The Darkness is a good comparison. That run is longer and goes through more repetitive passageways, but people reacted really positively to that run. Is it because people are more familiar with that game? I found this fairly interesting once I fast-forwarded some of the walking, because you get into fights so often with large crowds and get out just fine. It's also cool to know that the lightning wand needs luck manipulation to avoid vanishing (just like the character from Shining in the Darkness who goes "Wachunga!"). Toss in a cheesy action sequence with the Burrower, and the freaky face of your character using the lightning wand, and I'd say this qualifies. Good job!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks for the support everyone. You really encouraged me. On a personal note, I have always loved old school RPGs - ever since I got Dragon Warrior I when I was seven years old (shortly after it came out). I've watched almost every RPG TAS on the site and wanted to contribute one myself. I really enjoyed this game when I was younger and had my Genesis. Kudos to everyone who knew the game and enjoyed it!

As an old RPG geek who actually played some old skool D&D (read: 2nd edition) I appreciate this TAS on a different sort of level. A bit boring inbetween dungeons, but great elsewhere. A yes vote from me. Music is kinda sweet also

I actually found the run pretty interesting (well... what I saw of it, anyway. 3rd YT video hasn't been processed or something) once you were in the dungeons. I think the only thing I didn't like was that when you first exited the castle the drumbeat music combined with the way the grass tiles zip by when crossed diagonally gave me a headache, ehehe. Yes, vote from me... and for a screenshot I might like one of the parts where there's text of a whole bunch of traps, or maybe "Leather thongs with barbed hooks tear at your flesh!".

teh noj, I found that the game completes naturally if you end input after clearing the last monster's message (before the scene cuts to your player walking into the fort). Is it OK to end it there, or would you like to have extra input to go through the finale as fast as possible?

First off, it's accepted! Awesome! Secondly, to FractalFusion, I'm not sure how to answer your question. When I got to the end of the game (the last monster speech), I noticed that it kept going and that input hastened the ending/credits/stats page. SO, I wasn't sure when the real end of sequencing was. That's why I went all the way to the very end with the rerecording. To answer your question (best): I don't know.
