This question is mainly directed at Tarzan2 and Phil How do you play a 2 player game by yourself? ive tried it before with contra, and its so difficult, my brain actually HURT after i beat the first level, which took about 50 tries. Then i said, "Alright, mayeb they didnt use both hands to control both characters...", as i proceeded to use my feet to control player 2. Oddly enough, this only took me about 10 tries to beat the first level of contra with, but it was no where near time attack material, and my brain hurt again. How do you guys do it? Whats your 2 player / 1 player config?

I have found that 2 player movies are easier when you make dpad right for player 1 and player to assigned to the same key (cursor right, for instance). That way, you get 2 actions for one keystroke, which makes things easy. You can always reset the key config when this doesn't help anymore. Also, frame advance helps. A LOT.

well, i dont know if thats what they actually did, but if it is, it kind of takes away from the awesomeness of their movies. i mean, i can set the controls for the contra guys to be the same in side scrolling levels, and make left=right for player 2 on the base levels to make things interesting. but that would make for a boring time attack overall, becuase both would still be shooting at the same thing. maybe im just babbling like an idiot here, but thats just what i think.

Maybe Phil has more patience than I do.

I can tell in tarzan2's video that he did that periodically. Sometimes at the end of some levels, both players move perfectly opposite each other, which would be VERY hard to do if you had to actually think about moving 2 different things, using ALL of your fingers at the same time to play a game.

It's possible. Taking Tarzan's movie as example. He used left arrow as right, and right as left for Player 2. and A.B same for both. As result it show together moves. But it's not going to work in all stages.

this is how i do it: - get a gamepad (gamepad for player 2, keyboard for player 1) - use frame advance all the time: pause, save, think what keys u want, hold those keys, and frame advance untill you need to press another key. save, press the other key, and keep on frame advancing or unpause in case you need to check if that save is working for that set of pressed keys. and thats how you do it precisely, unless its an auto scrolling level, then you can simply play the game at 6% speed or less and control both at the same time (thats how i did battletoads level 3 for example).

wow. thats very painstaking. i would be very impressed if there was any video for contra beaten withthe 2p/1p approach but without frame advance. hell, they can even die a few times. just beating the game with 2 guys at the same time is a feat in andof itself.

I don't have a gamepad so I just map player 1 and 2 to separate areas of the keyboard, use frame advance all the time (which I do anyways) and just play like normal but with twice as many controls to worry about. I haven't actually finished any 2P runs though, they take a lot of patience no matter how you do them (and the only runs I've finished so far were done in 1 sitting or 2 at most).

A game like The Lost Vikings, for example, is actually not very hard to play controlling 2 players (I play it mostly at 6%, but sometimes at 3% for menus, item-switching, and difficult combos involving all three vikings). Although, the published version is pretty badly played compared to the new version I"m working on. As for controls, I configure the d-pads close together so I can use one hand for moving two vikings forward, while my left is for actions and such.

Back when I recored the Bubble bobble video there was no other emulator then Famtasia and no 60 fps patch for it. So there were no frame advance for me. So I simply played the game at a very low speed, like 5%. So that would be a game speed of 1 fps. If the levels were the same on both sides, I just mirrored the buttons for player2 so he would walk left when player1 walked right like you suggested. If you have a look on level 36 and very closely on level 59 you can see that I sometimes have to wait due to Famtasia only showing 20 fps back then. (Which means I'm not seeing 2/3 of the actual game happening, making me unable to do anything. That means if the frame when I'm supposed to bubble is not shown, I have to wait until I get such a frame. Level 36 is a perfect example of that.) If I remember correctly the 60 fps Famtasia patch was develouped while I recorded this video, I think it's used from level 75-80 and forward or someting. Ah, it's been a while since I wrote something in this forum, but fear not, I still love you guys :D EDIT: Oh yeah, kinda forgot, I only used a keyboard when recording my movie.

For Double Dragon 2, nearly the same scenario had occured like Tarzan. Famtasia at 20 fps. Anyway, my next project, is Battletoads, 2player alone with FCEU. I must finish the 1p warpless first ;) and SMB2j.
