Golden Axe 3 is very similar to other games. What sets this game is the addition of new moves and a 2 player cooperative mode, which enables combination of blows and spells. There is also a system of route, which may take longer or not and may be more difficult or not. (I dont speak English yet)
  • Emulator used: Gens 10.a
  • 2 Players
  • Takes no damage
  • Genre: Fighting
For this run I used the characters Kain Grinder, the barbarian and Chronos, the cat man. They have the best outcome in a cooperative way, with greater reach and effectiveness. The damage that they cause your stroke together are extremely high. This allows for rapid progress in the game. I tested some routes and keep going over it seemed to be the best strategy. It is somewhat difficult to hit three enemies at once. Four enemies is even more difficult. In some cases it is harder to make them line up, then have to find the exact point. Its nice to see another Golden Axe TAS done. And with 2-player action! It kinda bothered me that most of the attacking was the swirling panther strike move. There also seemed to be lots of lag in the movie. Thus, Have you checked on ways to reduce it? However, I was still entertained. So here is a Yes vote to you wwmarx.

I think that, in this case, I would rather see a 1P run, because the optimal 2P combination is way, way, too repetetive. If there were even one instance where something besides that swinging attack or the highest power magic attack was used against anything besides a thief I might be inclined to vote meh instead of no. It is a shame that you cannot log into the forums. You should try coming by IRC to see if anyone can help resolve the problem.

You never know when the perfect weapon for a job will be ... a panther. There is some variety and some bugs (what did you do to the last knights on stage 7??) so,... I voted Yes. And it would be way more repetitive with 1 player...

I would expect that, with one player, there would not be a single move that is always the best move to perform in every situation. If I am wrong about that then I'd revise my opinion to "This is a really bad game for TASing."

The problem is that the most effective moves are the ones that are powerful and unblockable. If the move is blockable the tougher enemies are very likely to block it... a lot. The fastest time I managed to complete the game on 1p Normal is under 25 minutes. I used the Panther and abused his distance special because it deals good amounts of damage and it was unblockable. The only parts I'm concerned is that On stage 3 you took the upper route. In my run I took the lower route mainly because: 1. The bonus game isn't too long (they are not using beanstalks) 2. The boss on that stage is a cursed player*. The only other part I'm unsure about is: The tag spell, sure it's very powerful but the animation takes too long. You can also use it if the enemy/boss is in a knockdown sprite in mid-air. See this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lwser3LgWnQ But then again I think there must be some headshaking first which is probably why it wasn't used straight away on the final boss. The barbarian can use 2 level 1 spells to quickly KO the bosses (the animation is very fast) but the tag attack seems very powerful killing them after 4-5 hits :o. * I do not know what happens if it was played with 2 players because it's possible to encounter the 3 cursed players on 1 route.

Yes voted because this appeals to a particular favorite sport of mine, extreme Panther tossing. Eat your heart out Cheetahmen, you just got out-catted. I, being the respectable man I am, shall distribute the exploits of this form of sport across various media outlets in form of High Definition video, and may consider a standard definition outlet for those of whom cannot comprehend the power of High Definition.

This game isn't as entertaining as the first Golden Axe, unfortunately. The panther swing is definitely repetitive and gets old. It's funny, because I quite like the Streets of Rage movie we have that uses the team attacks all the time, but I can't get into this run as much. I'm going with Meh. However, I thought it was funny to see the Panther run back in the end for the axe. He must have realized he needed a cool weapon to look tough for the credits.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

I've always thought Panther was a she. :) The game is much superior to GA1 when played in realtime due to higher variety and balance in… well, pretty much anything. For instance, forward+BC moves are rather hard to execute because they have some latency during which you are vulnerable. This balance obviously doesn't exist in a TAS, this is why you're seeing it as less entertaining.

tip of the day: If everything else fails, throw your partner on your foes! I love the Golden Axe series, and your run deserves my Yes vote. (and a place on my personal Genesis Collection, of course)

After many attempts, I managed to enter. I did some testing using 1P. The problem is that this version has the hits weakest of the entire series of Golden Axe. Even with a greater variety of strokes, the movie was repetitive and boring. And much longer too. Despite being repetitive, the 2P mode has a very rapid progress, because you can throw in one motion four enemies. That would be very slow in 1P mode. I believe the biggest entertainment is in rapid progress of run, which compensates for any repetition.

My personal opinion is that I would much prefer a 25 minute run that has more variety over this 15 minute run that uses one move over and over. I guess I'm heavily in the minority here, though.

You're not in the minority. I do admit that extreme Panther tossing's appeal wears off after a short while. Anyway, as official broadcaster of the extreme Panther tossing championships, I have provided some handy streaming media links for everyone to enjoy! Extreeeeeeme edition playlist! The setup for this sport is demonstrated in Part 1 of this amazing yet unusual sport Until it is finally concluded in the astonishing Part 2! Edit: Now in extreme Dailymotion edition!

This is highly optimized, that much is clear, but the fact that that single technique is so effective makes the entire run begin to drag down. I do like the exchanging of blocked blows during down time, but it's just not enough for me. It's a "meh", but more due to the details of the game than the skill of the TAS.

I think all movies that look optimized and have had hard work put into them should be published, so I voted yes. But I wasn't entertained enough to watch the whole thing. Someone should do Knights of the Round Table.

I liked it, but the one move kinda killed it for me. Gonna have to go meh.

For me at least, the reason the panther move is so boring is the nagging feeling that it doesn't even begin to do justice to this game's movelist. See: http://www.gamefaqs.com/genesis/586215-golden-axe-iii/faqs/55783 Having said that, I do love this game, and any Golden Axe 3 is good Golden Axe 3 as far as I am concerned. I'd like to see a GA3 TAS on the site someday, but I'm not sure if this is the correct form. I'm not as familiar with this game as I am with the first two, but since the panther special does such great damage are there not weaker attacks that would still quickly kill the earlier enemies? It'd be nice just to mix it up a bit. I'm resisting a biased yes vote and am voting meh. As mklip2001 stated, this does remind me of the Streets of Rage TAS I made with Mitjitsu, although I think that the main difference is that we were able to use team specials without having to wait too long for enemies to get into position etc. and the specials here really break any tempo that the author manages to get going.

Im inclined to follow mukki and others as well, i voted meh, the repeatitive trow was extremly boring by the end the movie, the game is good, i like graphics and musics, but the run beg for more variety. Otherwise with more variety i would have easly voted yes, also im pretty sure this run is technically good. Does the trow is less powerfull with other characters ? Or is its just for that character? Either way i think using suboptimal characters may solve the problem. * use suboptimal characters to create variety and entertainement or * forgoes the most powerfull moveset For a beat'em'all, i think this doesnt forcably disqualify you to have such goals.

This is a good game, with good graphics and music, and its 2-player. Those are all positives to making it a good game choice. However, beat em ups like this are often a problematic genre for TASing. This is because they often involve spamming the most powerful move over and over in order to achieve the fastest time. I think this movie demonstrates this problem very well. It is far too repetitive and watching it becomes increasingly dull and eventually a bit annoying. In contrast to Golden Axe I that has hilarious abuse of the enemy AI and a variety of moves, this shows off one really effective move for the entirety of 22 minutes. Therefore I am rejecting this movie. I am not convinced the game is unpublishable though. More variety is needed, and I think sacrificing time for that variety is likely needed. Also, the technique GreenaLink posted should be looked into. It would create variety, and all the better if it were actually faster.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects
