Post subject: Problems playing back videos (codec problem?)

I've had trouble playing back the past few videos to come out on the site. In particular, the Donkey Kong Country 2 video, the Megaman 2 hack video, and the Spyro 2 video. The first two of those barely play at all; if I seek to the middle of the DKC2 video, it eventually is able to play without delay for a while. The MM2 video doesn't play at all, and the Spyro 2 video can play the intro okay, but lags every 2 seconds of playback once the game starts. I have a system that's more than able to play back h.264 video: Nvidia 9800 gx2 video card AMD Phenom II X4 940 cpu (3 ghz) 2 gigs of ram So it sounds like a codec problem, right? I uninstalled and reinstalled K-Lite codec pack a few times, also enabling/disabling hardware acceleration for h.264, but it didn't change anything. I also updated my graphics driver. Just to make sure this isn't because of some new setting the site is using during encoding, I watched an older video, the Sonic 3 and Knuckles tas: http://tasvideos.org/1400M.html This video lags as well! And I know I watched this when it was released last year, at perfect speed, on this system. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? I know the problem is with my system but I don't know what..!

What video player are you using to play the movies? VLC should be able to play them without you having to download any additional codecs.

I use Media Player Classic, which comes with the k-lite codec pack. I've used that as my default player for a very long time, which is why I didn't understand what brought this about. Thanks a lot for that suggestion though - quite inexplicably, the videos play flawlessly in VLC! Do you have any idea what could have caused it to malfunction in MPC? Just for future reference, I would still like to solve that problem... but I think I'm going to make VLC my default player for .mp4 now.

Well I'm not a fan of k-lite (I think it messes up the system), but I think all you need to do is update your ffdshow. To me all you need instead of the k-lite crap is the following: MPC-HC ffdshow haali media splitter ac3filter Anyway that was a rant really so here is the link to a later version of ffdshow: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ffdshow.htm

I prefer the version of Media Player Classic that comes with Real Alternative, mainly because I use Real Alternative anyway to avoid installing Real Player. http://www.codecguide.com/download_real.htm If you want the Real Alternative codecs but you have your own version of Media Player Classic from elsewhere, download the "Lite" version. I also have used the latest SVN of ffdshow-tryout ever since I tried my hand at encoding for this site; I re-install it whenever my DivX Player (which I need to play .divx videos I find on the Internets) makes itself the default set of codecs instead of ffdshow and makes my non-divx-video experience a lot slower. http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/download.php Haali Splitter comes as part of the Matroska Splitter package: http://haali.su/mkv/ I also use ac3Filter: http://ac3filter.net/projects/ac3filter/releases I don't bother with the K-Lite Codec Pack or CCCP, because they quickly get outdated and conflict with other codecs; I do install the real QuickTime instead of QuickTime Alternative both because unlike Real Alternative, QuickTime Alternative does not include the DirectShow filters from QuickTime (which allow you to use Media Player Classic to play .mov files) and instead only allows you to play .mov files in your browser...and because it is possible to find a serial somewhere that lets you turn it into QuickTime Pro, with some video-editing features (albeit nothing as powerful as AviSynth, VirtualDub, mencoder, or AviDemux)

I updated my ffdshow codec, and that gave me a small improvement, but the error remained. Then I manually installed the Haali splitter, that had no effect; I tried messing with settings in MPC and switching the video renderer had various effects. Apparently the active filter was bad for h.264 playback, and most of the others do it perfectly.

This is incorrect. Haali's splittter can demux MP4s and MPEG-TS also. It also can optionally do AVIs if I remember correctly. Just make sure MPC is using Haali's splitter for MP4s by turning off MPC's internal MP4 demuxer.
