I don't understand what difference auto-firing the start button makes.
Gives more speed because it acts like a frame buffer.

In other words, lets you press A every moving frame with no blank input frames.

will this work for side BLJs cuz you have to wait a frame to fall down a step?

In other words, lets you press A every moving frame with no blank input frames. That can't be what's happening. Pressing A on 30 frames per second = holding A. There must be another explanation.

nope, that's how buffer works, one input per frame because you're using the start menu frames as your frame to release A in reality, you lose frames from hitting start in between jumps edit: lol, this would make the insane flying glitch even more insane

I'm most interested in whether this affects our ability to get the last CCCless stars :)

Hmmm, not to come in here and pretend I'm an expert... but isn't this how it works: Let's say you're BLJing for 10 frames. If you auto-fire A, press-release, you get 5 extra jumps or whatever. Would it not be exactly the same if you did press-start and release during start? So I take it this is what's going on: If we then differentiate between game-frames and pause-frames; on game-frame one, you press A and start. We then jump over to menu-frames, where you release A. Then on game-frame 2 it repeats, with A+start. From having coded a bit I know the most likely approach is to check if the A button has been released (by a boolean flag), and if it's currently being pressed. This would seemingly let you jump twice as many times during a BLJ, assuming mario is in a state where he can jump, on every frame.

Does the game even let you pause if you're not on the ground? I remember SM64 being super restrictive in terms of when you can and cannot pause.

You can pause at any time (as long as it's not in some sort of transition). What's restricted is your ability to exit the level. If you're not standing still, you cannot exit.

This is what I was going to say, but wasn't 100% sure of that. Thanks for clearing that up for me. This is an interesting strategy, I hope something comes of it.

To be honest, I think that pause trick looks really ugly and is a big turn-off.

different people different opinions this quick pausing looks awesome to me and the followed ultra quick BLJ makes the thing even better then ;) another good example is sidehopping in OoT and MM. many people hate it, someone even wanted it to be cut out of the final encode of the OoT TAS, but to me those perfect movements sound like music in my ears

People will probably get used to it. previously, whenever a BLJ happened it was like "yea, bunch of jumping seen it" then Mario took off and we're back into being interesting. Same here, though it's definitely more of an attention getter.

Disagree. Maybe for the 2 seconds it is occurring it is a bit ugly, but the faster speeds only make for more ridiculous star routes in my opinion. The following example is a star where the new trick cuts out about 10 seconds of metal walking underwater. Looks much better to me. Wow, what an improvement! The pausing is not much uglier than the BLJ itself, but the speed boost is definitely worth it.

I stand corrected. As long as it works that way, it didn't hurt the eyes and the entertainment value much. I assume all blj spots will use the pause trick?

Probably not. If the goal is close enough, the time wasted by pausing isn't made up by the quicker travel. For example I think this star is close enough that pausing wouldn't help.

It saves a frame in BitDW, if anyone is wondering.

I find that odd given that Mario can only travel so fast, otherwise he can't steer round that bend and stay on the course.

Well we got enough speed to not need a BLJ on the bridge, giving mario control way earlier.

What about enterng the 30 star door? Does this new trick help to build up enough speed to get through the door and DDD without these slow BLJs you had to do at the door to get through? I dont understand the SM64 physics at all, so Im not sure whats the purpose of these few extra jumps against the wall

Sorry if this was already posted, I saw this on Youtube, randomly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_niuy6gAySs Maybe it can be useful, it claims to be fastest, but a comment says there's something faster by 40 seconds. I hope it can be useful )
