The reason I choose the DS version is because it has skipable cutscenes and room transisions and green slime instead of blood so more people who maybe don't can stand blood can stand this. The graphics isn't not as good as the Plasytation version but that's acaptable since it's much so faster to beat. This run is pretty optimised. I think the plant and tyrant boss can be beaten faster. Maybe on plant you can kill it in one go without moveing but then you need lots of lucks and tyrant faster but he was a pain in my butt and drived me crayz and then I got sick
I like to puint out that I made one mistake. On plant I missed a knife swing swing I always play without sund and didn't notice I miss untill too late for redoing. There is one miss knife swing on tyrant but it was intetional because if I didn't swing he would hit me and I would loose time

Hmm... It desynchs for me every time right here: Jill runs in the wall, then the menu is openened and she runs back in the room an just does weird stuff. I used 0.9.4+ and i'm very experienced with emulators :D I tried several things, but could't get it to work properly.

Hmm, I'm doing an encode of this, and I noticed after the credits, you need to press start in order to get a small cut scene + time stats. Do you think that should be included in the encode?

If it gets accepted, the official encode definitely should. As a quick "Hey, watch this if you can't/don't want to get the emulator working/don't have the ROM/whatever" encode... well, it's up to you, really, but I tend to skip the credits and anything like them. Will refrain from voting until an encode is up, as my computer isn't nearly beastly enough to handly DS emulating. :P

Hmmm, that missed knife swing doesn't sound too sexy. But I am going to wait for the encode before I make any more judgements.

Perhaps because for many people here English is not their first, or even second, language.

True in many cases, but in my experience, once spelling mistakes pop up, you can be fairly sure the text is written by a native speaker. It takes a strong grasp of language to be able to spell incorrectly without severely impairing comprehension. With that said, I don't really mind all the grammatical/spelling errors. Something to do with living in an area with a high immigrant population I guess.

Thanks for the encode, Aktanusa! I watched this and was moderately entertained. It's nice to have a map screen which helps you follow along a little with the run. The run doesn't strike me as really well-optimized, where it seems a lot of corners are taken wider than necessary. Also, at one point about 11 minutes in (I think), you get caught by a vine which seems to have no purpose (though maybe I don't know the game well enough). Also, you pick up acid rounds early on but never use them since you only fight with the knife: could you have avoided these rounds? And the tyrant fight looks sort of ugly compared to everything else since you take damage there. This does seem pretty solid, but I'm not yet sure what to vote.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Okay so I watched the encode and, well, here are my thoughts. This movie bored me. It didn't bore me because it was poorly executed (it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be, but it looked iffy at times), it didn't bore me because there was almost no combat. No, it bored me because I realized that a top-down Resident Evil game WITHOUT hilarious dialog is just a bunch of running through generic hallways. The input quality was surprising. From your submission comments and self-admitted mistake with the knife, I was expecting some noobish howler of a TAS that I wouldn't be able to distinguish from a normal speedrun. But, again, it was better than I anticipated. I did like how you collision zipped past the snake guarding the moon crest though :P Voting meh. Thought about voting no, but there were some interesting parts, and it wasn't completely horrible either. It would have been a wiser move from an entertainment perspective to run the PS1 version, because then at least the monotony of running down hallways could be broken up by some of the most unintentionally hilarious dialog this side of Symphony of the Night. I would totally love a run from you on the PS1 version, and would vote yes if it was good :D

Voting 'no'. The run doesn't look optimized, In areas where tight control is required you're movements kind of awkward, and in corridors you're taking so many corners wide. Sticking solely to the knife may sound like a great accolisment to an unassisted runner, but it doesn't really look impressive in a TAS. You should be luck manipulating head shots with the berreta. The thing that bothered me the most was how timid the AI is. Many of the enemies seem to be oblivious that a human is jogging past them.

I also noticed this. I think on the corners it's faster to just take the wider movement due to running, because turning in this game is pretty slow (you can only do 180-degree turns quickly). Edit: Continuing to watch, a lot of these corners do seem to be taken a little bit wide. I think the movement can be optimized further.

It's faster to be hit by this vine than it is to push a nearby object over the hole. The SDA speedruns also get hit by the vine.

If you're talking about the acid rounds Barry gives you when you reach the upper level from that one door on the right side of the entry room, you can't avoid them to my knowledge. I haven't finished watching this yet, I'll edit this as I continue to watch. Around 12:40 or so on the box pushing segment, the movement looks a bit unoptimized to me. Would it be possible to do 180-degree turns closer to the box before pushing it? Also you ran for a few seconds on the second box before pushing it, I'm pretty sure it can be done faster. You missed a knife swing on Plant 42. Why did you run all the way around on the giant spider? The acid it spits helps damage the wall, and you may be able to dodge and cut faster than making it glitch and just cutting at the wall. Also, you manually turned to cut the web. A 180-degree turn then a small right turn would be faster. When pushing the statue off the boulder room, you stop pushing for a second, run into it for a second, then push again a little bit. Why? The tyrant fight doesn't look good, to me. You say you needed to swing and miss with the knife to avoid being hit, but then you get hit later in the fight. Also, you miss a second swing later in the fight. If possible, could you save that first-aid spray you used near the beginning for here when you're in Danger status? I think you move slightly slower while in Danger. I think your movement here near the end of the run is better than your movement at the beginning of the run. You take the corners a lot better here. Also, I agree with the others that a non-knife only run would be better.

Hmm... it seemed quicker to kill the bosses with the knife than I thought it would be. I personally feel that using the DS version was a good choice. Yes, we lose all the hilariously bad dialog, but we also get to skip all the door transitions. IIRC, those accounted for a third(?) of the length of the PSX RE3 run. Maybe I'm just easily entertained, but I did like the movie, though I would prefer a run that uses weapons. Because of that, and the technical elements mentioned earlier, voting meh.

It's been a while since I played the original, and I don't know the changes this version has, but from what I understand the acid rounds you can't skip since it's part of a dialogue scene with Barry. The vine is also impossible to skip unless you push the statue from around the corner over the hole (it's part of the big plant he had to kill). To skip the Barry cutscene would require you to take another route, which IIRC takes a lot longer since you have to do a ton of backtracking. Taking the corners wide is probably faster than stopping, turning, then running again. I will have to say no to the run because of missing the knife on the plant and the tyrant fight does seem to need a bit of cleaning up (maybe just pick up a healing spray or two and suck down more hits?). ***edit*** I really should refresh the page before writing my comments next time :)

Are you realy sure you can 180 turn around ? ... from what i remember this appear in re3 psx for the first time (hopefully im wrong and they implemented this for ds too... i realy didnt payed attention if there was quick turn in the movie) There was a few passages i felt like the movements was not perfect, but tbh, without testing its impossible to realy tell, on re3 i had some ackward outcome like running in a wall was going faster than anything else, so well i will not give bad points for something i cant be sure The big trouble i have with this is : knife only and bad ending ... Why just knife ? surely it goes slower that way... so its not good... try re3 with nicolai if you realy want to knife some ;) Bad ending ... its too cheap to me... i mean to me its obvious you need to play on hard diffuculty and reach all possible "goals" to unsure making a good movie, time wise im not even sure anybody would have argue since theres not much difference by saving chris/barry Im not sure what to vote yet so ill abstain for now and choose later, hopefully there will be some comments from Fladdermus that can weight in the balance

Thats correct, and i also agree this is a good game choice for the same reason, maybe no movie is not fun, but no door cutscene is obviously more important :p

I haven't watched the run (mostly because I wouldn't be a good judge for it, due to having never played a PSX RE game), but I do feel the need to comment on a couple things just from reading the description and thread. 1. Does it take more time to collect weapons and ammo than it does to kill everything with the knife? If not, then I don't see the run being published due to "Knife Only" being an arbitrary goal. 2. The missed knife swing(s?) aren't going well with the crowd, and as far as the rules go, the only time you should miss shots/hits is if it manipulates luck in some way. The run's probably not going to be published because of this. I'm sure a cleaned-up, slightly more optimized version that used other weapons would definitely be published, but in its current state, even these small mistakes give it a high chance of rejection. Edit: I abstained from voting.

Oh wow, that submission text is horrible written. Maybe I should have slept before submitting and not after TASing the whole day. It's a lot faster to dodge the enemies than it is to kill them, so a knife run is the fastest way. Only thing that would be faster with guns is the boss fights, but the time spent getting guns doesn't make up for the time saved at the bosses. And another thing that makes knife run faster is that you won't have to use storage, so you save a few seconds there. "If possible, could you save that first-aid spray you used near the beginning for here when you're in Danger status? I think you move slightly slower while in Danger." You move the same speed when hurt, plus you get a nice blinking upper screen. The reason I used the first-aid spray when putting in the battery is because you need to get rid of 1 item to have room for the second doom book. So I could either spend 4 frames using a spray or spend seconds putting the ahndgun/acid rounds in the storage. "When pushing the statue off the boulder room, you stop pushing for a second, run into it for a second, then push again a little bit. Why?" If I just kept pushing the statue would be too far away and I would have to crank again. "Why did you run all the way around on the giant spider? The acid it spits helps damage the wall, and you may be able to dodge and cut faster than making it glitch and just cutting at the wall. Also, you manually turned to cut the web. A 180-degree turn then a small right turn would be faster." The spider shoots web faster than you can knife and dodge. When pulling out the knife, your character automaticly turns to the closest enemy and 180 degree turning isn't possible when wielding knife. "The tyrant fight doesn't look good, to me. You say you needed to swing and miss with the knife to avoid being hit, but then you get hit later in the fight. Also, you miss a second swing later in the fight." Tyrant is a bit retarded at times. If I would have let him hit me instead of swing he would have kept attacking while when I let him hit me later on, he acts weird so I can attack him 2 times and then 3 times. And the second swing would have missed no matter what since he attacks faster than you get hit him 2 times when standing in front of him. I just decided to swing anyways becaue, uh, I don't know. About the corner turning, hitting a wall makes you loose frames. Since the controls are really slow when turning the only time it's worth hitting corners is when there is something right after it like a door you need to go through or an enemy you need to dodge but can't when not touching a corner and would instead have to stop and turn a little.

The rerecord count seems to indicate that he spent more than a day (or even a week) total on this project.

Does it take realy "that" long to save chris/barry ? And your sure you dont have any "good" gun on your way to tyran ? you dont even use your handgun.... i would have tought it save at least a few knife hits
