I'm glad to submit the movie I've been working on for a year. I would always like to make a perfect SMB_warpless run, and now, here it is!
This is an improvement over my last movie, but while I was fighting for this, adelikat, klmz, and andrewg had finished their movie, so, it's also an improvement over the SMB_Warpless movie #1331.

This movie I made is:

  • 167 frames faster than movie #1331; 316 frames faster than my last movie
  • Emulator: FEC Ultra 0.98.28 (I transformed the .fcm movie into .fm2 lately)
  • Uses no warps
  • Aims for fastest time (even in every level)
  • Almost UNBREAKABLE
  • Quite MORE entertaining

Here are the results of comparing this movie with my last movie:

1-1 3 frames faster, 0 frame saved It's so close, but there's nothing we can do about it
1-2 3 frames faster, 0 frame saved
1-3 3 frames faster, 0 frame saved
1-4 0 frame faster, 0 frame saved
2-1 84 frames faster, 105 frames saved Canceling the "Vine glitch" with the new tricks.
2-2 9 frames faster, 0 frame saved Better start, 100% kills.
2-3 0 frame faster, 0 frame saved 100% kills + 100% coins.
2-4 0 frame faster, 0 frame saved
3-1 89 frames faster, 105 frames saved Also canceling the "Vine glitch".
3-2 16 frames faster, 21 frames saved By better treading action, I thought it couldn't save time.
3-3 1 frame faster, 0 frame saved By jumping into the ground on a lift, it couldn't save any time.
3-4 3 frames faster, 21 frames saved By better run.
4-1 0 frame faster, 0 frame saved
4-2 0 frame faster, 0 frame saved
4-3 0 frame faster, 0 frame saved
4-4 4 frames faster, 0 frame saved By better jumping into the wall and going through the Fire Bar, you can't get 1 more frame faster.
5-1 1 frame faster, 0 frame saved I tried to use the Bullet Bill glitch, but it didn't work.
5-2 1 frame faster, 0 frame saved The "Vine glitch" can't be used here.
5-3 0 frame faster, 0 frame saved
5-4 0 frame faster, 0 frame saved
6-1 0 frame faster, 0 frame saved
6-2 54 frames faster, 63 frames saved I didn't cancel the "Vine glitch" here, but I changed a little.
6-3 1 frame faster, 0 frame saved
6-4 0 frame faster, 0 frame saved I tried everything to get that 1 lost frame at the boss fight, but I had to give it up.
7-1 1 frame faster, 0 frame saved Keeping the Bullet Bill glitch.
7-2 8 frames faster, 0 frame saved
7-3 0 frame faster, 0 frame saved 100% kills + 100% coins.
7-4 1 frame faster, 0 frame saved
8-1 1 frame faster, 0 frame saved
8-2 2 frames faster, 0 frame saved
8-3 0 frame faster, 0 frame saved
8-4 1 frame faster, 1 frame saved By using the trick that's found by klmz.

New tricks:

There are 3 new tricks represented in this movie. All of them were found by me - HappyLee.
  • The "Shell glitch" (near the pole)
    • Koopa Troopas can be useful in the end, just like Bullet Bills. It's a very cool trick to me :)
      • Used in 3-1, 6-2
  • Koopa Paratroopas flying backwards
    • Those are very odd phenomenons, most people didn't know how to use it, well, I did. I steped on that Koopa Paratroopa and went through the ground. At first, I had to stamp that Koopa Paratroopa for 3 times, and then steped on the moving shell to go through the ground, until I found this "Koopa Paratroopas flying backwards" trick, it saved 21 more frames.
      • Used in 2-1, couldn't be used in 6-2
  • Jumping into the ground (before the pole)
    • This trick isn't new, I used it in 3-2 before, but it has been used in a different way in this movie, exceptionally in 3-3, although it saved nothing.
      • Used in 2-1, 3-2, 3-3, couldn't be used in 1-3, 5-3
I'm Chinese, I couldn't speak English well, so someone please give those tricks better names, thank you. And one more thing I'd like to say, the "Vine glitch" in movie #1331 wasn't found by us, someone had already found it for a lone time, I found it, too. I didn't used it because I know there're ways a lot faster than using the "Vine glitch", and I didn't finish this movie as soon as I can, because I'd like to make it better, and I am not going to talk on the TASVideos discussion board until now. So, I guess this is not a frame war anymore, it's about hard-working guys who made progress.

Thanks to:

GAP(a Chinese player), who've been encouraging me for a long time.
klmz, who helped me solve several questions and agreed to cooperate with me.
andrewg, who wanted to work with me on this project together.
adelikat, who tought me to write this Submission text.
If you find some ways to improve this movie - who ever you are, please come and cooperate with me, thank you.
Here goes the snaps! I hope you like them!

adelikat: Accepting as an improvement to the published movie.

Raiscan: Processing.

Hey at least this time you mentioned it is warpless. edit: ok, this is tool-assisted to the core, I loved the entertainment choices. Wish it had more dancing in the water. I didn't understand much of the waiting for flag pole glitch, sometimes it seemed like you waited way too much, but who am I to complain? It did though LOOK bad. Ok, I'll make an youtube, if that's alright.

Reading HappyLee's posts now, I can barely tell English isn't his first language. Someone's come a long way. Wish I could watch this, but my Windows compy is on the fritz. I'll cross my fingers and await an encode.

This new movie was very satisfying. Thank you, HappyLee :) I've got two questions: 1) Why did you use both the vine glitch and the koopa in 6-2? Did you use the vine glitch only to gain distance, and come closer to the koopa sooner? 2) Why no flagpole glitch in 8-3?

WOWWWWWW.... Happylee, you are one creative guy (to say the least)... I thought of some of the options you did, but I couldn't make ANY of them work. You even managed to use a shell to do the bullet bill glitch (in 3-1) which me and klmz had determined to be impossible! So I'm very happy you were able to do the shell-flagpole glitch when we couldn't. I'm glad it's possible. Happylee, congrats! I'm going to see if I can find any other improvements. This run should get a star ;)

Thanks for the encode, FODA! Mario only pulled down one flag in the entire run! I guess he likes green stars. Nice run! Congratulations, HappyLee.

I can't watch this yet, so all I can say is holy effing, effing crap...I can't believe the previous submission was improvable by so much. And I much appreciate the more congenial tone for what continues to be an amazing competitive/cooperative effort!

Thanks for the YouTube encode, FODA! I'm still not a big fan of the amount of times that backwards running is used, but I think this run looks quite good stylistically. Also, I'm amazed by your technical understanding of the game, HappyLee. 6-2 was absolutely incredible. MUGG, if I recall correctly, there's no flagpole glitch in 8-3 because there isn't any way to get down to the bottom of the flag without losing a lot of running speed, too much to be able to pull off the flagpole glitch (or, at least, you don't save time doing this). The run with warps hits the flag in 8-3 as well. I just have one question: can the screen-scrolling glitch that was found for the walkathon save any time? I wasn't sure if it was needed when you're able to run.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

I'll try to answer the questions people have: It doesn't save time for 8-3 because if you do the glitch the timer ends on a 3 and you get 3 fireworks. The screen scrolling in 2-1 and 3-1 is done so that he can hit the turtles earlier as he is farther right on the screen, sets things up that would normally be impossible. The vine glitch is used for distance in level 6-2 to hit the turtle correctly at the end. The screen scrolling used in the walkathon is much slower than just turning around while running. Basically it was only used to avoid the pirhana which is only a problem at walking speed in 8-4.

I've always found the warpless runs to be way more entertaining than the warp runs. This was no exception. Yes/thanks FODA.

Wow, I was amazed with the last warpless run, but this just blows me away. Great Job with those glitches and optimization! Yes vote for sure.

I did like the idea of killing (nearly) every enemy passing by, but there still was a little too much pointlessly jumping against the ceiling for my taste. Voting meh.

Yeah, one falling flag is pretty amazing. I'm also impressed that HappyLee's contributions match the previous improvements by a team of three. Can someone double check HappyLee's 1-1 vs. the 1-1 that was supposedly 1 frame short and see if an improvement was found hiding somewhere? Personally, the jumping in fortress levels is somewhat interesting to me as it distorts the sound channels. The jumping in this run wasn't distracting to me, possibly because there was a lot going on with fireballs. What exactly happened in 8-4 with the shaded/dark ground? Was that an encoding issue or a graphical glitch? Yes vote for significant technical improvements to an already tight run.

I don't remember what you're talking about but I did increase the bottom view by 7 pixels to allow the video to be encoded in h263 (height multiple of 8). So if you're talking about the bottom 7 pixels, that's just nes garbage that isn't supposed to appear on the tv.

Thanks, I may not be a good TASer, but I know SMB much.

I don't understand the deal with _slowing down_ by entering the top of a pipe for a moment (2-1, 3-1). What's going on?
