I looked around and the helpfile doesn't mention it... has this been removed, or is it just hidden somewhere?

No official software ever used the microphone, and I have no idea if any rogue software ever used it. Maybe there's a demo somewhere that does, just to prove that it works, but otherwise...

The microphone was also used in first-party games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda#Technology http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2UtC_SwAfY Although I doubt there's any technical documentation on how this works exactly (other than redirecting the input sound to the speakers...), this really would be a neat feature.

I'm fairly positive it did at one point... Edit: Actually aparrently it never did. However, the VS System "Insert Coin" seems to be the exact same register.

I know of a few games that use it: - That game already linked - Zelda 1 (Pol's Voice) - Star Soldier - Atlantis no Nazo There were a few other ones, but I can't remember any others at the moment. Keep in mind that the mic is really more of a sound detector, as it only has 2 states ("silence" and "something", i.e. 0/1). Very, very limited usefulness.

Wow. I had no idea that such a thing has existed. The Famicom does not really have CPU power (or RAM) to process PCM sound at a worthwhile rate, so as Xkeeper put it, it's just a silence/sound detector. Suppose it could be hacked to do so _something_ useful, such as recognizing a rhythm (think Patapon), given enough effort.

It doesn't work :( I believe Ferret tested it, and I did too... I was going to swear that I saw a microphone option in FCEU... but I'm wrong.

If used in Legend of Zelda as a way of killing off all the Pol's voices, would a microphone be allowed for use in a TAS if it existed? I'm just curious, is all.

Alden's right: I gave that one a shot already, and it didn't work. There are are many legends surrounding the game about some ridiculous tasks that are required to complete the game; many of them are not true. I'll give this method another shot, but it takes around an hour and a half when there's a method that can beat it in two-three minutes. I'll still need microphone support to pull it off, though.
