I seriously call dibs on this once a good, working DS emulator with rerecording comes out. I've only played the Wii version, but I'm easily willing to pick up the DS version. We could add a crappy subtitle to the video, something like "PERMANENT HEALING TOUCH" or something. Anyone else think it'd be an entertaining run, to see someone do surgery so incredibly fast that it's massively entertaining? God, I'd love to see someone dominate some of those GUILT strains...

I liked the Wii speedrun of this game. (And so did Kwinse according to his quit message.)

I was thinking about doing a Wii speedrun, except he did his on Hard, and I still have some stuff I can't do on Easy. But hey, in about 10 years, there'll totally be a working Wii emulator! And I'd be the first to download it. Until then, the DS speedrun is something I'll be looking forward to doing.

Looks like DS is ready now, so I'm going to be working on Under the Knife 1. I'm still in discussion with Atma about goals; basically it boils down to absolute fastest real time aka "sadistic surgeon" or getting best rank aka "perfect surgeon" goals. Test video here.

Given how well that first mission looked, you should almost manage to be able to do both be fast and be perfect. ^^;;

I for one would love to see both!

I prefer 'perfect surgeon'. :) But at the end, the time wouldn't be to different, right? It'll be about 10 seconds slower in the perfect way than the sadistic one.

Oh dear, this removes all the feeling of pressure and stress from the game. Good job, doctor Styles!

Well, I calculated that in the end, the fastest time 'sadistic surgeon' will be roughly 1 minute faster. Because, geling before the last bandage takes about an extra second (and there's lots of missions!), and there's other little ways that getting all 'cool!'s wastes some time here and there (like having to gel some extra before rubbing a bandage). Finally, at the final Savato mission, to get S rank you need to heal all the slice wounds before delivering the black syringe, which is like 50 or so wounds; rather than deliver the syringe at the first opportunity. This is what I'm talking about. (Off topic, I wish Savato had final boss music as good as the sequel.) I kinda liked the sadistic goal (you can tell from my avatar), what with extreme surgery with the patient's vitals not being a concern at all, then patching up and saying "done!" while the patient is still bleeding. However, the perfect surgeon is good because now I can do two things a human player can never do; get insanely fast times and get all cools. Also, open question, does anyone know how the X missions are accessed? Is it after the credits? I want to do those missions as well, but I don't know if I have to beat the final boss, sit through all of the credits, then do the x missions, and end the movie file at the last X mission without any more credits to show.

Problem with the X missions is that it would make the run somewhat boring, considering that they're just the last seven missions with the difficulty upped. Better would probably be to do a run that finishes through Final Sin and stops input when the credits begin rolling.

Oh, I hadn't realized the X missions were copies of the last 7 missions. That answers that question then; I'll probably end input after Final Sin and the credits will be the end of the movie. *Note: This'll be very easy. I checked, and it seems the last button to press in the game is Select, so that the last conversation between Derek and Angie is sped through, and then the credits start on their own. Edit: After a frustrating number of weeks, finally moving on from mission 4 to 5. Which includes all my favorite (not!) operations, like vials and tumors. :-/

Chapter 1 is done! Moving on to operation #9. This means I'm theoretically 1/6th done with the game.

I already did, earlier in the topic. If you mean a new one, absolutely not (you'd know that if you knew how I don't give WIPs anymore ever unless for specific reasons); I'm using "cutting edge" optimizations as well as some techniques that I really, really must keep secret until submission. Trust me, you'll enjoy seeing the entire thing with new eyes when it's submitted.

So which run are you going for? perfect score, or sadistic surgeon? By the way, if you or someone else ever does the latter, please remember to put 'sadistic surgeon' in the submission title :p

I'm aiming for perfect surgeon. I'm being cruel and sadistic in other ways, which you'll see when it's finished. And there's no need to physically write sadistic surgeon in the submission title; you'll notice no other game does that for separate categories. Nor do I at the moment feel a need for a fastest run, since the time difference between them will be less than I thought (and my WIP is a full 6 seconds faster than a fastest time WIP).

Chapter 2 is done. And now the game starts to get really, really tough... so progress should slow down. Edit: Well, this is unfortunate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAx-2dRyExk&feature=channel_page

Just so you know, you CAN go back and edit out the scanning if you know exactly where things are. Such as when doing mission 1-3 and the tumors.

Since I've seen videos of players who suture the first cut before it comes out, if the suturing is the problem, then it should be possible to hold off on finishing the second suture until 1 frame after Large Kyriaki spawns. Then again, Kyriaki on the DS is rather buggy, so who knows.

I know. My video was a demonstration that the Kyriaki disappears from the mission COMPLETELY (a glitch); I have so far never used the ultrasound unless I absolutely HAVE to (in which case it happens so fast you miss it, or on the first frame possible to save 2 frames). Fortunately for me, I found the trigger that causes it; the suture line you make on the first cut cannot be completed before a certain frame; after it, the boss kyriaki appears just fine. Nice TAS of operation 3, but in my WIP I end with a time of 4:48:93, whereas you end with 4:45:05.
