Hi all. I've been looking at speedruns here for awhile (mainly the Megaman-related ones) and I have to say this: Nice job! I also like to speedrun, I don't do TASes but I do speedruns. (and sometimes challenge videos) If your interested, my speedruns (segmented) are on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iPROKIcsPk <-- Shadow Devil (Megaman X5, No Armor X/No Weapons/No Upgrades) I have many more on my YouTube channel. Also, a question I have, would a segmented No Damage run of Megaman X1 be accepted here? (if I joined all the parts together) It's not a speedrun at all, just how I did a no damage run. Thanks!

Only tool-assisted speedruns are accepted here.

Thought so. Was worth asking, anyway. Thanks!

I thought they only accepted speedruns if it was from the real game (recorded via camera)?

Yes, they have to be from the actual game, not an emulator, but I don't think a camera is an acceptable recording method except perhaps in extremely rare cases.

The only time it is allowed is with the DS or PSP. You have to build some craaaazy contraption to keep the damn system still as you play it. Also, no webcams :P

Yes, there seems to be no market for regular speedruns on an emulator. I think this is pretty logical, since if speedruns get better and better, it is less and less probable that they were done without savestates and frame advance. If you were to do something really impressive (as in, something that might be interesting to watch), it is not possible to know whether it was done legitimally. So the better the speedrun, the more legit statements like "I don't believe this was done in realtime" are... which kinda defies the purpose.

Out of curiosity: How do they check at SDA that you are indeed not using an emulator? Or in other words: How do you prove that you didn't use an emulator? Whatever means are used to get the video output of the real console to a movie file can be used to get the output of an emulator to the same movie file. You could even go so far as to use a graphics card with a TV-out connector (which is not even rare) to truely simulate what the real console would output (interlaced scanlines and all).

There's a bunch of ways (and people have been caught before). I'm not going to list them because security through obscurity might not be airtight, but it sure is useful.

It is not failproof though, and that is my biggest concern.

You don't even need it for the PSP anymore. PSP-3000 supports interlaced composite out now, so anybody an record easily.

Oh, of course it isn't failproof. What is? However, it's close enough, and considering what a niche activity speedrunning is anyway, it's good enough.

It also has scanlines (I think that's what you call it), so that's rather bad...
