Not much of a playable hack, actually, but I like the Kumikyoku hack for Super Mario World. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEFa17MZrX8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYxHrqfFj7E Oddly, though, it seems to desync depending on which you enter the level. Also, it doesn't sync to the music, it's a tad slower than in those videos. ;/

Metroid Redesign is a very very good reinterpretation of Super Metroid. It's coherent, challenging, and huge.

I'm not a huge fan of Redesign as far as Super Metroid hacks go (mainly because I feel like the game is too stingy with Samus's power level, which leads to having to shoot minor enemies a half-dozen times to kill them), but I like Dependence and Golden Dawn. They're a bit harder than the original, but nowhere near as bad as the "raar we hate you" hacks that you usually see. Savestates are recommended because putting in save rooms is apparently rather difficult for the hacker, not because the difficulty demands it. That said, Golden Dawn is a bit tricky with where it hides things, so you'll need to be ready to search carefully.

My personal favorite is Sonic 1 Megamix, although I don't play many hacks. You should enjoy it if you are a sonic fan as it has the non-linearity and tempo of the later genesis sonic games but with some cool throwbacks to the earlier ones.

Super Demo World: The Legend Continues (there are actually TASes of this hack on TASVideos) The Legend of Zelda: Parallel Worlds Both are very hard, but awesome as well.

Super Metroid Cliffhanger is in my opinion the best Super Metroid hack there is to date.

I considered mentioning that one, but I'm ticked off with it because I can't do the short-charge and thus can't get to Kraid.

The short-charge is one of the easiest (hell, it probably is the easiest) glitches to pull off, honestly. Just walk for a bit before pressing the run button. I've been enjoying that hack so far, though I admit I did have to go look at the thread from time to time to figure out where to go next. Several of the "use item here" points are not at all obvious.

Unless I've got my terminology messed up, that's the quick-charge. Short-charge is where you only press the run button on specific frames.

I thought that was the stutter-charge? In any event, I just finished the easy version of the hack, and never needed more than what you called the quick-charge. Given that the "normal"-difficulty version was described in difficulty as being like SM Impossible, I think I'll pass on that one.

Short Charge (Human Style): press run at the end of the first step. Short Charge (TAS Style): press run only on frames that increment the charge counter Stutter Charge (TAS only really): on the first step pair only (while the charge counter is 0), you do fancy controller work to make Samus's feet run without moving her very much at all.
