i cannot see the problem.. people doing timeattacks on long games worry about the size of the .avi .... why??? wth people 2004 now soon 2005.. a single .avi at 2gb is nothing ... really ... 5 years ago when people only had like 10gb harddrive.. well then i wouldnt download a timeattack at 2gb :x ... but now.. err cmon... still most important is that if you do long timeattacks, dont split the file into several small files f**king annoying (like the SDA site) .. if splitting then do it at 700mb or something for people who incist on burning a cdr of it or something.. and i guess all people using this site got atleast 256kbit internet.. ... enuff said..

Ok, lets deconstruct your argument. First, you address the downloader. They have more harddrive space? Agreed. More bandwidth? Possibly. Pretentious enough to not be able handle something as simple as split files? For the most part, hopefully no. You are forgetting a major factor. The person hosting the files. They do not have infinite bandwidth. Nor do they have infinite hard drive space. Uploads are capped by most high bandwidth service providers. So have it hosted you say? And who is going to front that bill? Are you, in your vast generousity going to fork over 10 bucks a month for these 2 gb videos? Most small time run sites are done out of the pockets and the paitence of those who run them. They are usually dedicated and generous people. Perhaps you should be a little more thankful, instead of blasting these people with your logically flawed arguments. Perhaps if you want 2 gb videos distributed, you should start your own site. I look forward to visiting it. Until then, bow gracefully in thanks, and keep your trap shut.

The files at SDA are split for other reasons than filesize issues, I hope you're aware of that. Hell, there's at least one 3GB speedrun up there.

No one would ever host (and probably not download) a 2 gig time attack unless it was.... the time attack of all time... I'm not a guy who complains if a download takes a day or two, heck, I've downloaded stuff for a week or two... but not everyone has high speed connections and the will do download for a long time. Bisqwit would run out of disk space in a few days... and no one would download cause the files were just too big. Also, the quality of the current files are fine, perhaps only the sonic run which has so much fast movement that kinda screws up the video, but other then that all videos are fine. The reason most of those files on sda are more then one video file is often (not always, don't worry TSA) because they are segmented, often seperated by a save, like in the Super Metroid video for example. Sorry, but gigant video files is so unpractical, even the warez ppl are dividing their movie files up into 700 meg files so you can burn them on CD.

The assumption that everyone has the money to buy a large hard drive, let alone want to take up that much disk space with an avi file, is pretty preposterous. As long as there is someone that can not handle such a large file, we should try to avoid horrendously large movie files that can be played just as easily in an emulator at a tiny fraction of the file size. And, in case it matters, I am not one of the people that downloads the emulator movies. In fact, I have almost every currently published movie on my hard drive in avi form. It's something around 32 GB of space right now (including a few SDA movies), but that is only a portion of my 250GB master HD.

You are totally wrong Tarzan. Me and Walker have 10mbps speed and are more than willing to host this great site. But we need more people with at least 10mbps, because only 2 persons cannot handle the entire host. Therefore for me at least it would not be a slight problem to host a file if the file is 5gig or 20mb.

I just don't see the point WHY? I'm completely satisfied with the current quality of the AVI-files on this site. Raising the bitrate wouldn't bring that much of a quality gain so I see it as pointless. Or would you like to have 5.1 AC3 sounds with you movie? I however do agree that some movies could be bigger to accommodate for the excess movement and color in those movies (like the aforementioned sonic run). But those are just few exceptions and most of the movies are fine as they are now. [EDIT:] There's also the point with using bittorrent as a distribution channel. There would be far less seeders and thus less distributed copies if the sizes were huge. Normally I think people seed until their ratio is 1 or so. With huge sizes they won't bother if their upstream is quite low. There are really some bandwidth limitations, ie. limits on how much you can download per month in some countries / ISPs. I don't think they want to waste gigs of that for some speedrun. And then there are modem users... [/END RANT] I don't just see the point to moving bigger files. If that is done, at least have smaller files available too.

Well.. I think there would be an issue for the encoders as well.. How much space do you think an uncompressed 2GB compressed movie would take? Besides.. There is also the GMV, SMV, FCM etc. to download for people who wants full graphics etc.
