This is my New Year's gift, I hope you enjoy it! It's 149 frames faster than my last movie, 126 frames faster than my last submission, about Super Mario Bros walk through, but it's even faster in some levels that it doesn't count, and I did lots of tricks in it, one of them is new, which is the trick at the end of 8-2, I used a bullet to end faster. I didn't even think about it before! I think this one is much more perfect than my last one,it's better to watch!
And one more thing:Happy New Year!

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. Here goes! Feel free to clean up the list.

adelikat: Accepting as an improvement to the published movie.

Did you mess with the settings? It could be caused by hardware or software related issues. All "mixers" look crystal clear on my computer.
I can't tell from your post if you know, but 'VMR9 mixer mode' is a setting specifically for the VMR9 renderer. It might be named something slightly different in the normal media player classic, I'm using an x64 media center edition. Anyway, it might be a driver problem or something, but everything is up-to-date.

It seems really hard to record a video file...

Not really, its just that people are REALLY picky over what settings they want to use when in reality... I really cannot visually see the difference. Than again, it almost litterally does not matter when you upload the video to youtube (As far as I am aware most people will watch the video on youtube for convenience sakes than quality sakes in the end anyway).

That's weird, it works fine for me :\ Oh well, thanks for the report, I guess. Anyone else can confirm/deny this? I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong...
It looks fine, but seeking.. doesn't work right. (Also, the bitrate is higher than needed, the image is too thin (you're supposed to force a 4:3 aspect), and the fps is 59.999 instead of 60.100 like it's supposed to be.)
But I think it's good enough, and it has my name on it!

Um, a yes vote from me. 6.5/9.5. It just looks awesome on a page to quote someone, who's in turn quoted someone else ect... as for the review... well, you're walking, which can't be good for the entertainment, but on the technical side it's amazing. the bullet bill skip is... unexpected. I wonder if you could use that in the actual SMB run, in 8-2 maybe? Also doesn't everyone know where they can get they're hands on an SMB rom? And if they don't have it, they can always just go to youtube, which is the obvious choice, rather than worry about a perfect encode. Why do you have to use H26.4 anyway? can't you just go with the good old MPEG-2? H26.4 seems like a shitty format when it comes to stability. It's only a 7 minute video anyway, so size won't really matter.

Well h264 offers a far superior image quality to filesize ratio in comparison to other formats. Divx and Xvid are both advanced forms of mpeg-4, then there's regular mpeg4 (aka h263) and further down the line is mpeg-2. It's just that there have been tons of h264 video streams on this site that have taken almost no cpu at all for me to play, whereas the .mp4 files on SDA have always drop kicked my system. And codecs don't matter with VLC or SMPlayer, but I also attempted the good old MPC with ffdshow tryouts and received the same result - a fully red gauge on Process Explorer. I've encoded a handful of my own*, and I've always used ffdshow to make h264 videos and they always play back without killing the cpu and look fine. I didn't really tinker with the settings, just set a bitrate, so what settings have you evolved to use in the last couple of months? (*VBA, even taking 50% cpu at a high priority, still won't run at a stable 60 fps for me, it wanders around a bit. So whenever a run comes out that I really adore, such as BioSpark's psychopathic killathon 100% Fusion runs, I make my own avi out of them with the ffdshow codec so I get it rendered in HQ2X. Just so I got a perfectly smooth framerate on playback.)

In fact, I didn't invent that skill, klmz did (in his SMB speedrun), I've just copy it to my movie. But because of the speed was not enough, it made the skill became harder to finish, I didn't even think of it before.

I'm not a fan of Mario movies, but I'll comment on the videos. I tried Johannes' encode, and it's like an .mp4 from SDA; 100% cpu usage. Usually the h264 videos from this site take up no cpu at all. I can't even watch a HQ run from SDA, it just completely thrashes my Athlon Barton 2800+. I don't know which h264 setting does it, but it's quite unfriendly to those without hardware h264 decoding or fairly recent processors.
Using ffdshow in windows xp, I only get about 50-60% on a 300mhz pentium II with 64mb RAM...

Of course size matters, when a 10 MB file can achieve the same quality as a 60 MB file. This site was born from the need for high quality video files for publication, and a good filesize to quality ratio is among the requirements. When 160 kbps looks transparent, there's no need to use 960. There is no reason to still be using MPEG-2 - H.264 is far superior. Would you care to explain what exactly is unstable about it, except for the high CPU usage on 6 year old computers with shitty hardware/decoders?

I think you nailed it, right there. Believe me I'm never going to build another computer with a CPU or chipset that wasn't built by Intel, I can tell you that.

Basically what you're saying here is if you had a video format which could not be played on any other computer but yours, and the quality was lossless and file size was a mb/min, then it would be perfect. What you're missing here is the fact that there may be quite a few people who have shitty 6 year old hardware, and if that's the case, and they don't have a ROM, then H26.4 is definitely not for them. So here's a radical thought: why don't you try using a different format, or encode in more than one format? It doesn't necessarily haveto be mpeg-2, but it will run on any machine without question.

h264 and cpu usage could things like Cabac cause lots of extra cpu usage?

Very nice run. I was wondering if that were possible when I watched the old movie. great job! :) 147 frames saved in 8-2 and 2 frames saved in 8-4?

CABAC's impact on CPU usage is minimal. B-frames usage, b_pyramid and more reference frames do, however, make the videos more CPU-demanding.

Wrong. What I'm saying is that if 99.6% of the people here can play it, it's good. Like duksandfish said, even an ancient laptop can play my encode with ffdshow.

If it plays on a pentium 2 but not well on a late model athlon xp it's either some hideous software problem or a hardware issue with current generation video decoding on certain processors / certain motherboard / video card setups. I remember my XP 2400 + radeon 9800 pro, it hated decoding any kind of newer video (youtube, .264) without going into high CPU usage. But that's very odd. You'd think trying different codecs or players could alter things. can't speak for others but my P4 plays SDA HQ at about 5-10% (but only encodes to sda HQ format at 1fps, 80% usage)

This is common for HappyLee. I remember his first movies being really amazing, but Bisqwit said everywhere "They're faster than mine, but not so entertaining." Then, all of Bisqwit's "followers" started to criticize HappyLee's movie and to make fun of him on IRC (exactly the same as what happened when Bisqwit had an "exchanging of views" with pSX Author). Then it took more than a month to accept his first movie, even though it was a lot better than Bisqwit's, not only in time, but in entertainment and style choices too. Needless to say, the ratings were much lower too:

You're just fucking stupid, everyone hates you, sorry to tell you the truth. no one likes you, you're someone pretentious and TASes only to be on speed game, but don't have any hope, you won't get there.

A lot of 2D-runs get lower average rating, especially entertainment rating, because people who dislike 2D rates them. And yeah I can give examples. So this is a more and more occurring event. Just a heads up.

If you're using the ffdshow tryouts, have you tried the 'AMD compatible version'? (I think they've started making them only recently) Linky

Main reason for posting this: It seems NVA's recent attempts at adding screenshots didn't work. Otherwise, nice run.
