Perhaps somebody here can help me. snes9x, vba, ePSXe 1.6.0 and a whole bunch of other game-related programs (which include Fallout, Fallout 2 and Peggle) would work on my system in the past. Then one day, they stopped working. What would happen is that I would open them, the cursor would change into an hourglass signifying that it's going to load it, but then the cursor would revert, and it would be as if I never attempted to open it. I just reformatted my computer and snes9x and vba worked fine. I don't know exactly what I did, but now the problem has reoccured for snes9x, while vba remains available. I'm just doing random things to try and get vba to not work as well, so I can figure out what the problem is. I have a feeling the problem is a conflict with another program, and I am leaning towards iTunes for some reason. I was playing between snes9x and vba, then I stopped load some songs into iTunes and then bam, snes9x falls victim to problem. The problem occurred earlier on in the year about after I bought my iPod, too, if I recall correctly. I reformatted my system solely to get rid of the problem, and now it has turned up again, not two hours after reformatting. It must be a problem with one of the programs I began using, and big chance that it's iTunes, but I can't figure out what the heck that would have to do with games failing to run, and now, why vba works but snes9x does not. Edit: Welp, there we go. vba falls victim along with snes9x. I didn't even touch iTunes this time. Just what could be the problem? This time, all I recall doing was grab a few .dll files to supplement pSX. Could the problem be related to DirectX? Come to think of it, I did get three .dll files for vba before snes9x died. I wonder if they're related. The .dll files I got were: msvcr71.dll, msvcp71.dll and mfc71.dll for vba 1.7.2 v19.3 and d3dx9_26.dll for pSX 1.13.

did you try a System Restore? or go to video properties, advanced then in the troubleshoot tab try to reduce or disable hardware acceleration.

What kind of shell extension did you use, pirate_sephiroth? Also, I have the latest iTunes and DirectX9 and several versions of snes9x and vba and they have never conflicted; I use XP Home SP3.

I use Vista Start Menu Yeah, I don't think it's the dlls. The only time I remember I saw this, was on a friend of mine's old PC, and it was related to the video card. Are your drivers up to date?

I'm not sure, but I think they should be. I never installed any driver/s for my video card manually. I think the drivers were installed as part of Service Pack 2.

I encountered a fatal hardware malfunction yesterday morning. It had been three days since I reformatted and each morning, shortly after I'd turn my computer on, a high-pitched sound would be emitted from the computer (and not the speakers). On the third day, it gave me an error message about a USB controller not functioning and promptly froze. When I gave it a hard reset, it wouldn't boot for me (not even through safe mode), so I was forced to re-reformat. Through the course of doing so, I found out that the initial problem probably isn't related to iTunes, as I haven't even bothered installing it this time around (and yes, snes9x and vba still cease to work for me). I now have a feeling that the problem is related to Service Pack 2. This time, immediately after reformatting, I installed (respectively): SP2, motherboard drivers (forgot what it actually is), Microsoft mouse/keyboard software, Creative sound card drivers, Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4, Winamp 5.541 and Pidgin 2.5.2. At this point, I began setting up emulators and I found out snes9x and vba failed to work, even before I attempted to try them. Out of all the programs installed, I've used all except SP2 before ever successfully encountering the problem. ZSNES, ePSXe 1.5.2 and pSX still work though. I even neglected SP2's video card drivers by installing the NVIDIA ones I used to use before ever encountering the problem; the problem still persists. The high-pitched sound occurred again this morning, but thankfully, no error message or hardware malfunction. But I think it's only a matter of time before it happens again. When it does, I guess I should take it as a sign to consider buying a new system. While that may solve the high-pitched sound, I don't think it'll solve the problem with snes9x and vba (and other programs like Alcohol 120% and BitComet).

There are several viruses that do this. Sometimes they append themselves to exes so they copy themselves to other exes before running the program, sometimes they just do the former part and skip the latter. Sometimes they are supposed to do both but for one reason or another fail. I only mention this because I have had such a virus in the past.

There was no high-pitched sound today. As opposed to shutting down the computer, I put it on standby overnight.

Yeah, some virus bind themselves to any exefile and sometimes break it. That's why I always zip my backed-up executables and installers. I didn't comment this possibility because I supposed you had an up-to-date antivirus.

I figured out that the sound was coming from the monitor. Happens every time I turn it on, and possibly after a long period of time.

Ah yes, now you mention it, my current (desktop) monitor emits a high-pitched whining noise under some conditions; setting the resolution one 'grade' lower tends to make it stop. It does worry me though, but the desktop doesn't get used much.

how to fix whinning monitors (works just as well with whinning sharks):

I guess you just suggest that erokky (and maybe LagDotCom a well) should buy a new one? o_O I used to have that problem, and now I just use an old monitor instead... Yeah, because I punched/hammered the whinning monitor, and it started to display random black vertical stripes instead... X(
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do

Try decreasing the refresh rate instead.

Yes, that helps as well, but you try recording decent quake speedruns at 60fps. ;)

Just remember to save up for a better monitor when your current one dies from overheating.
