Ya know, somehow the removal of images on the front page makes things look a *lot* better.

I think it's a matter of opinion. Personally I disagree. It's cleaner, but boring.

Hmm, yeah, where'd they go? I liked them too...

Ooo, a chance to defend my position? I accept this challenge!

First, of course it's a matter of opinion! I agree with you there. Second, yes, it's cleaner, and that's what I like about it! One thing I've liked about this site is its visually simplicity; nothing there that clogs or distracts, and I think part of my initial ambivalence towards the new layout was that the images were distracting. The way it feels to me now is cleaner and more streamlined. This I can get used to! But, as you said, this is all a matter of opinion. :> Edit: | Oh darn. Oh well. v

I don't have a problem with the images per se, except they cover up some of the text. Though since no one else has said anything, maybe it's just me.

I think even with just text the front page is pretty loaded with information; it doesn't scream simplicity to me. The images act as a sort of focal point... they're the first thing that draws the eye, and then from there you think "Why are they there?" "Oh, they're from this list of movies to the side" It's also a good way to give variety to the page, because no matter how much the lists of new movies/submissions/stars change they will always "look" the same. Rotating screenshots give a sense of change to me.

Random idea: When you hover a link on the main page, the screenshot changes (using javascript) to the screenshot for that video. (If javascripts are not enabled, then it simply would work like currently.)

I think the hilarious little plumber appears a bit too often. It gets distracting after a while.

It's impossible for him to be shown 'too often'. ;-)

I didn't like the new style at first, but now I'm starting to get used to it. I still don't like the blue links over the light blue background, but otherwise it feels a lot better than the old one. Also, the "tasnapshot.tar.bz2" file at TASvideos Snapshot hasn't been working for a while, I hope you can fix it.
You're just fucking stupid, everyone hates you, sorry to tell you the truth. no one likes you, you're someone pretentious and TASes only to be on speed game, but don't have any hope, you won't get there.

I've bought a new screen where I run FireFox on a large resolution (1600 pixels wide). I'm seeing the logo being replicated on the right, mostly cropped. I guess it's okay to report a bug ? Has it been introduced in the last version ?

It's not a bug, it's a feature![/irony]

Given that the background image is 1600 pixel in width and that your screen resolution is wider than this, the former is repeated. I assume this may be fixed with some CSS greatness (by making the logo a seperate image to be added instead of it being embedded directly into the picture or whatnot).

This has been around for some time. I reported it a year or so ago but I don't think it's a very high priority bug..

CSS supports non-repeating background images (and the non-repeating flag can be set for the horizontal and vertical separately). It should be fairly trivial to set it up as thus.

Sure... but it would also halt the gradient. I find the repeating logo a lesser evil than an abruptly cutting background gradient would be. Sure, could be fixed by removing the logo from the gradient and instead displaying it using a dedicated html tag, but I am not bothering.

would it be possible to place the image in a <div> with absolute positioning floating over the rest of the page and replace the background with just a 1 px wide gradient?

Yeah, that is definitely easy to do... Just replace the current background image with the gradient image (which would just be 1px wide vertical line) and keep the CSS properties for it the same. Then add the logo to that anchor tag currently overlaying the logo, moving the inline CSS style for it around a bit. Yes, I am aware that this might have been obvious, but it clarifies the post above a bit. EDIT: not to mention that it cuts back on bandwidth by a bit to do it this way...

I have this much to say at this time. I have gotten used to the layout, like I said I would. Thank you all, and merry Christmas. hooray for pointless posts!

You know, I still find myself saying, "Man, when is the left sidebar going to load? ....Oh." Maybe the new layout just wasn't different enough for me.

Does anyone have any comments about how the Article Index page should be done? Or any comments about my editing?
