Burger Time Deluxe is another of my favorite games from my childhood. Except that I could never get past stage 1-2 when I was 7. Now with the aid of an emulator I finally managed to beat this game. And I do this as fast as possible ;)

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: VBA 1.7.2 re-recording v19.3
  • Take no damage/Never die/Don't use death as shortcut
  • Complete the levels as fast as possible

The plot of Burger Time Deluxe is simple. There is this bad guy who opens a Donut shop near our hero's fast food. Our mission is to prevent him from doing so. To do that, we have to move our good chef over gigantic hamburgers, killing anthropomorphic hot dogs, eggs, and donuts in the process. We have an attack that confuses our enemies for a few seconds: too bad it quickly runs out, and getting refuels sometimes is just a waste of time. For this reason, I use this attack as long as I can, but I develop dodging strategies whenever possible. Once all the hamburgers have been moved to the bottom of the screen, you win that stage. Note that sometimes I walk back and forth without an apparent reason, and it looks like I'm wasting time: no. I'm just manipulating the enemies' patterns. Basically, each kind of enemy tries to reach you in a different way (X axis first, Y axis first, etc), so I move my X or Y position in order to move them where I want to. It also manipulates luck (e.g. the bonuses I get, the appearing ladders, etc). All in all, I'm satisfied by this run. I think I found the fastest route to beat each stage, of course according to the limited number of attacks I can use.

<Explain here things the audience would probably like to see>This game is cool.
  • Manipulates luck
<Explain also things that could be improved in your movie>Maybe some of the paths. I wouldn't cry if someone obsoletes this movie, given it will be accepted first of course.
<You may also suggest screenshots.>

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. Oh! I also corrected the ROM name.
  • You indicated Burger Time Deluxe (J).gb
  • I updated it to Burger Time Deluxe (JU) [b1].gb

mmbossman: I think this game may be publication worthy, in the same vein as the Lolo series, but unfortunately I think that this current iteration is simply too sloppy. I understand that there will be some waiting time to allow the enemies to appear on the various burger sections, but this run looks lacking in the route planning department, and the rerecord count seems to reinforce that idea. I would not be surprised if another couple minutes couldn't be shaved off with better testing and route planning. Better luck next time.

According to the website I downloaded this from, it is japanese only, but maybe (probably) you're right, I'm not good when it comes to these codes.

The rom it seemed to be recorded from was "Burger Time Deluxe (JU) [b1].gb" I found this one oddly entertaining. Seeing the chef constantly being tormented by ever-increasing legions of bloodthirsty sentient hotdogs, pancakes, hard-boiled eggs, and doughnuts and the little chef's desperate attempts to complete his mission of dropping half-ton sandwiches on the enemy stronghold kept it from becoming too boring. There were also some pretty neat escape tactics that kept the task from becoming too monotonous. Entertainment ranking 7. Good route planning and appeared to be frame perfect. It seems slightly improvable, though. Technical ranking 9.

Normally I get bored of these sorts of games because the levels quite often repeat, or are long and dull. However the sheer difficulty of the game, and how the levels were tackled, plus the design of some of the levels, it held my attention quite well. It was starting to get a little dull with the last few levels, but no enough that I would not want to see this published. Did I mention this game is hard? :P 6.5/8 for me.

4|Abstained It didn't hold my attention personally (I've even played the game before) but I could see how it could do so to someone. The bits I did watch were amusing though... Technically, it seems that things could be faster, however that's just conjecture as I have no specific arguments at this point :)

Here is an encode of this movie. Also, let me mention most of the times I look slower than possible it's because I'm planning to do something else in the near future, maybe to allow myself to take a better path or just to manipulate luck. Yes, I know that sometimes my moves seem odd, but it has to do with enemies' behaviour and how them relate to your X and Y positions, which is why sometimes I climb on a ladder just to get down a few frames later. Of course I'm not saying that my paths aren't improveable, but I think I managed to get good paths and strategies most of the times, especially when I had to deal with the limited amount of attacks (sometimes going to get a reful was longer than using a dodging strategy). The only exception to this rule is at the very end, when I wait for all the enemies to stand on the last slice of bread before pushing it down: this is completely unnecessary and I'm willing to cut it out from the movie file if requested, but I added it as a single speed/entertainment tradeoff, because in my opinion it suggests a better "you've beat the game, you killed all the enemies" feeling.

I give this a resounding 'meh'. That's about my opinion on it. Kind of neat at first, then it wore down and started dragging. Fast forward came into play later.
