Google, in another stroke of mad brilliance, has created Google 2001, allowing you to search the internet as it was seven years ago. A lot of people are using it to reminisce about the good ol' days of the internet. My two searches of interest: History confirms the origins stated in the Wikipedia article concerning our hobby. Only 1630 hits register; obviously something was percolating back then. Compare to the two million you get today. So what do some of your searches yield? Edit: For some other things, check out this Gamespite Talking Time thread. Apparently "lulz" only gets around 70 hits.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

4.4 million results for "porn" then vs 188 million today. "lolcat" yields one hit. Results for "dramatica" are strictly related to the writing of fiction. I'm a little surprised that "Bisqwit" existed back then, but he had about 585 hits compared to the 19700 he has now. Neat.

Nice! We could make this into a small competetion - Who can find the search with the highest (current google hits) / (2001 google hits) ratio? I searched "Obama" and got 4420 hits 2001 and 187 million on current google, giving the ratio 42 307.

I'll start with infinite: Current: 46500, old: 0. EDIT: Oh, and the search phrase was "tasvideos". I wonder how I forgot to write it here :)

Please do provide the search phrase. :) Hmm, perhaps the competition should be modified to only allow searches that yields at least 1 hit 2001. Division by zero is not always appreciated. ;)

I got 46600 personally. Edit: But on subsequent pages it says 46500. Make up your mind Google! And it won't show past 473. Cheaters.

I searched for Youtube and got 999 000 000 hits today and 0 hits 2001... Quite impressive. I wonder if there's any search phrase that yields 0 hits 2001 and even more hits today than Youtube did.

This one is almost cheating. However it's not infinite so here it goes: LOLcat 2008: about 1,620,000 2001: 1 (!) Ratio: About 1,620,000 (Also go me for my first post after chatting in IRC for forever!)
I accidentally a post. The whole post!

I tried entering "BitTorrent" and got 2008: 57,700,000 2001: 0 So that is a ratio of 57,700.000 to 0, which is not possible to calculate. I tried do another search that would yield at least one hit in 2001, so I typed in "Sarah Palin" and got 2008: 54,300,000 2001: 2,610 So that is a ratio of 20804 I'm sure it's possible to do better

The best I've managed so far was "Mario Galaxy", which yielded 5,260,000:1. I also call shenanigans, because there are far too many hits on "Xbox 360" in 2001 to be accurate. I'm not even sure the one hit on "Mario Galaxy" is deserved. Edit: Apparently, "Xbox 360" was a website before Microsoft ever gave the platform that designation. Fair enough.
Kirby said so, so it must be true. ( >'.')>

I wonder if it's possible to find the opposite - a search in google 2001 that gives more results than a google seach today...

Maybe if you found some software piracy group that died soon after 2001, that might do it.

Drink or Die is a good example, but it still gets more hits now then it did then. Though most of the hits now are related to the raid rather then the actual group itself. Ytmnd 0:5,080,000 4chan 225:1,870,000 digg 5,540:891,000,000 didn't realize how recent these sites were.

It's hard to find something that gives LESS hits now than then.

Possible, though utterly contrived. Search FractalFusion Jo vast Google 2001: 1 Google: 0 Ratio: 0/1=0 Really, just search every word in a site indexed in Google 2001.
