Got tired of playing snes games with the keyboard (can't play laying on the sofa) so I bought one of these: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/gaming/pc_gaming/gamepads/devices/301&cl=us,en It worked pretty well in linux and snes9x after a minor configuration. I have never actually owned a console (well, besides the PSP). Perhaps now I will get the feeling of what is it like to play one. :P

Yep, I have a similiar gamepad myself. Perhaps you should download "Joy to Key" if you want to assign some hotkeys to the gamepad buttons. I usually have turbo mode assigned to the "R2" button when playing RPG:s on SNES9X. Those random encounters take too much time on 100% speed. ;)

There are also USB adapters available for almost any console gamepad. My favorite gamepad is still the NES one, though it doesn't have enough buttons for almost any game these days. Now that you have a gamepad, try playing "Doukutsu Monogatari" (Cave Story) again. If you haven't played it, you NEED TO. You'll appreciate the game, and your gamepad, a lot. Edit: Well, Cave Story is a Windows game, but judging from your post, you might be using GNU/Linux ... so try using Wine to play it. Or not, it's up to you.

I do have Windows in this machine too, although I almost never use it. I could try it. Thanks for the tip.

I also have that specific gamepad. It's an excellent price and so far has worked great for TASing, and the occasional non-TASing :) And I also use Joy to Key as Randil suggested - with it, I assign U+D and L+R to the back two shoulder buttons. Yay controllers! \o/

The two unused shoulder buttons (the gamepad has 4) could indeed be remapped to something useful in the emulator. I'll have to look how joy4key is used.

snes9x-related question: I see that in the snes9x.conf file you can map controller buttons to different types of commands. For example, if you wanted to map button 8 to quick save 0, you would write: J00:B7 = QuickSave000 However, I know this only because it's one of the very few examples given in the snes9x documentation. Nowhere can I find a full list of possible commands (and their explanations) which can be used there. Searching for "quicksave000" in google only returns 4 results, none of which is helpful. Does anyone have any idea about this?

I owned a Spectrum 128+A. Not a "console" per se, but close. It didn't have a gamepad. Speaking of the gamepad, it took some hours of playing to get accustomed to the directional buttons being pressed just with one thumb (instead of the three-finger controlling of the keyboard cursor keys), but once I got the hang of it, it's quite cool to play with it.

Sorry to resuscitate an old (and useless) thread, but I just had to. Initially I bought the gamepad because it was so cheap and I thought it would be cool to play some (s)nes games with it. However, I have noticed using it more and more, so I upgraded it to this: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/gaming/pc_gaming/gamepads/devices/264&cl=us,en Feels a lot sturdier. The old one feels like a toy in comparison. I also have to admit that I *still* haven't tried cave story. I apologize. I'm going to download it right now.

I use one of these hooked up to one of these. Logitech makes nice products and all, but I don't think anything will ever replace the Japanese Saturn controller in my heart.

I use a PS2 controller hooked up to a USB adaptor, largely because I needed the adaptor anyway to play StepMania. It works pretty well, though - for SNES games I put Start and Select on the extra two shoulder buttons and remap the "real" Start and Select to save and defrost.

I think that's one of the most popular USB PC controllers out there (if not the most popular). I have one. EDIT: (note that I didn't derive the second sentence of this post from the first)

When I first started TASing, I used that kind of gamepad. But then I TASed so much that it eventually broke. So I went out and bought a new one, and then that one broke too. Now I recently bought my third one, so hopefully it will give me many more hours of TASing time. (I'm not at all saying that this gamepad breaks easily, my previous ones lasted many hundreds of hours before breaking.) I used to use the program that came with the CD to assign hotkey commands to the gamepad, but today I use Joy2Key instead. So yeah, a good buy indeed.

Just out of curiosity: What button assignments do you use for TASing? Given that there are at least 9 possible savestate slots, frame advance and maybe some other controls (turbo?), it seems you would run out of unused buttons in the controller rather quickly.

I had that Logitech controller once. I hated it because the of the way the d-pad is shaped. I use a Dual Shock PS2 controller now. L2: Frame advance R2: Turbo any button pressed L3: Frame skip R3: Pause/unpause As for savestates, I load/save from the keyboard (left side).

Here's my setup: R1: Pause game. R2: Save state. L1: Frame advance. L2: Load state. All other commands are managed with the keyboard (I have E for load state and Q for savestate, and select state using 1-9). I use S for frame display, D for input display, tab for turbo mode and Y for auto-hold.

I use an x360 pad for all my emu gaming, which is pretty sweet. Just struggling getting the analog sticks to work with some PCSX plugin or other. Got some good use for leftover buttons in older emu's too.SNES: LT - Save state RT - Load state LS Up - Slot+ LS Down - Slot- RS Right - Fast Forward Also rearranged ABXY for SMW convenience :P

For SNES, since I have six face buttons, I map L and R to X and A, respectively. L button is load, R button is save, and I control save state slots and frame skip on the keyboard. The exception to this is Super Metroid, where I'm terribly uncomfortable not having the angle aim buttons on L and R, so the shoulder buttons and save/load are transposed.
