I've seen the submission queue this empty once. I was talking to Cardboard one day and then I found like, only four submissions in the queue. I nearly had a heartattack.

You sure? I really could've sworn there was four briefly somewhere around the time that the Metroid II runs by Cardboard were either submitted or made, I can't remember which. ...You know what? This is funny too, I just realized something. Whenever Metroid II runs have been submitted or published, somehow, the queue seems to end up at its lowest point in a long time.

That would require someone using Linux to capture it. If someone is willing to capture it according to site rules and sent it to either adelikat or I, we would be happy to process the run.

Wow, that's a lot of published runs in the past few days. Thanks and cheers to the encoders and others who worked to publish those good runs in the queue!

How hard would it be to automatically encode runs, anyway? Obviously this depends on the console in question; as I understand it FCEU has built-in AVI recording facilities, for example. It seems like the biggest problem is CPU time, followed by hosting space, but if someone was to doonate both, would there be many technical hurdles involved in automatically encoding submissions?

I suppose I should be nice and give you a better answer than "yes": Encoding requires 3 things a machine doesn't have: Visual recognition of quality, Aural recognition of quality and prior knowledge of game graphics/audio complexity. While these could likely be implemented with specialist AI, it would take an extremely large amount of time and resources to make, which I find it doubtful that anyone here has. Even then, I doubt it would make up for a human encoder. To some extent, x264 has some visual recognition of quality, but even this requires human input to set its strength. That said, a large amount of the process can be automated with batch files. The encoding process is no secret but it should be noted that there are many challenges with getting a good size:quality ratio. The biggest challenges are solved with time and patience (something I recently have an abundance in).

I'm getting around to it, just slowly. It's a particularly hard submission because the reception has been lukewarm, for the most part. And decisions on those types always lead to drama.

I meant that as a joke, not an act of passive aggression. I wouldn't really cancel it; even if I did, I would just uncancel it later. As for the run itself, it has its flaws, and I did it for fun anyway, so I'm not really waiting on it. P.S. Besides, is anyone serious about an infamous "pirate" game? P.P.S. It's not a Mega Man game.

I'm more interested in Sky Blazer, personally. Thunder Blast Man was an okay watch (and clearly well-run despite the game's massive flaws), but Sky Blazer's actually fun.

Checking the edit logs, it appears that there was a timespan of almost 50 minutes where there was only one submission in the queue. Was it ever this empty since the first time there were two submissions in the queue?

Yeah, this morning was special:) We were rushing to get it to 0, but then a few surprise submissions popped up. Oh well. AFAIK, 1 is almost certainly the least amount ever in the queue, because I'm sure that it started out with a few in it when the queue was initiated.

Movies are submitted on a more or less steady pace (which is a great thing), and optimally they would stay on the submission queue long enough for people to have time to vote and comment on them with enough detail. Warp, do you also tell little children that Santa Claus doesn't exist? All of the runs that have been on the workbench recently have had at least a moderate amount of votes, without any "problem" submissions. Eggerland was published slightly quickly, but it was an obsoletion attempt and a well made movie. I see no problem trying to rid the queue of submissions every once in a while as long as it is appropriate timing.
