I'm running into some issues when recording if I hold down too many (or certain combos of) buttons at a time. I'm wondering if this is a hardware or software issue. any clues?

It's a hardware (keyboard) problem. So, get a better one.

You can get a better keyboard, use different non-conflicting keys, or map multiple functions to a single key.

if that is because you are making a two players run you can set player 2 to use the gamepad, or you can set some buttons to the same key (i.e. RIGHT button for player 1 and player 2 set to the "right key" on the keyboard.) you can also use keys like Shift, ctrl and alt, they usually allow for more simultaneous keypresses. also the arrows on the numeric keypad work better with multiple keypress than the usual arrows.

Have you tried frame-by-frame? That might be your solution.

I'm messing with a new arrow configuration, I think arrows + alt and shift may fix it

If memory serves correct i heard that old keyboards have a much less limitation (like 5-8 keys same time) because old games used to have 2 players on the same keyboad but nowdays we use LAN, or internet so we need only one user per keyboard. so newer keyboards have like 3-5 keys same time. I also suggest you to use a gamepad or plug 2 different keyboards (ie. PS/2 and USB) to your computer :) if you want to buy a new keyboard i remember that keytronic is the answer.

Myself I use two keyboards. One via USB and one via the original port. Might be a bit messy sometimes but it sure is good when you play 2P ;) Also I can have the forward or the boost button pressed on one of the keyboards all the time (using some kind of weight to hold it down). Works realy good if you don't have any other options ;)

I think I should buy an USB keyboard. Even with 5-8, I found it pretty limited when you have to press 12 buttons or more.
