well iam not so familiar with that stuff..
ive just read about all the available windows updates and service pack 3(ive installed all small safety updates)
is it worth to install service pack 3? (iam using windows xp pro 32 bit sp2 right now)
and should i download service pack 1 for net framework 2.0 or just get net framework 3.0? both are available there but what do i need?
In SP3, you lose the ability to have an address bar on your taskbar. It works just like the Run command in Windows. That's basically the only downside.
Be sure you've uninstalled any third-party video-card drivers; after I installed SP3 on my desktop that had the Omega drivers installed, I had to disable agp440 just to get it to boot.
After installation is successful you can go through whatever ordeal you needed to get the third-party drivers installed again.
Anyway another effect of SP3 is a set of new Vista-style icons and graphics, like if you use Remote Desktop frequently you'll notice a difference in the opening dialog.

There should be a file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ called browseui.dll, if you replace that dll with the one from SP2 then you get your location bar back (will need to replace the file with the command line since it's a system file)

That's odd. I also use omega drivers, but didn't encounter this problem.
On the other hand, a problem I do get is that when trying to run exe files I downloaded off the net or extract from zip files, I now need to get through these annoying 'this might be unsafe, continue anyway?' messages, which I can't for the life of me figure out how to disable.
It's really annoying how every update they seem to see me as a younger, stupider kid.
Automatic Update is evil, It makes your computer reboot by not asking you and then you lose some job by not saving your stuff before quitting the office.

My favorite is when the fucking program stops asking if you wish to restart now and restarts automatically. How many times must I say "Not now" in a fucking hour?!

I have my Automatic Updates set to download the updates, but not install them until I give the go-ahead; since the shutdown menu gives you the option to have the updates install, then power off when finished, I almost never have to think about them.

Somehow I've experienced both phenomenon, and both piss me off. Some times the damn thing will ask every 4 minutes to restart, other times I'll come back to my computer to find it at the log in screen. Cue venomous rage.

That doesn't prevent it from automatically resetting your computer after X minutes, so it is not really a solution.

I have this on both of my computers and I have never understood why people are so frustrated with Windows Update. If you don't want it to nag you, don't tell it to install the updates until you're ready to reboot.
Problem fucking solved.
For some reason my computer is set for auto-update and has all other otions grayed out. IIRC, the auto-update downloads and installs, and then asks for you to restart.
Speaking of grayed out, though, anyone have an idea as to why I can't get that setting changed back? Or, perhaps, some command for the run dialog that will re-enable it? I think the problem came about when I lived on campus and had a bit of computer work done. The tech guys probably enabled and locked auto-update.
