Another vote of interest here. Don't damage your real life for the sake of it but I too would definitely appreciate a quality run of this game, accepted or not.

You do realize that Aaron hasn't posted in more than half a year (and over 1.5 years in this particular thread), right? I think it's fair to assume he isn't going to finish this project. Somebody else will have to look at it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember this topic from quite some time back and watching the WIP, and remembering how poorly emulated this game was on SNES9x. Wouldn't it just be better to do the Genesis version? I know it's slightly inferior graphics and sound-wise, but if it means better emulation, I'd take that version any day because it'd be much easier to enjoy.

I think blargg's SNES sound core fixes this game (barring any other problems), so if that could be added to snes9x..

I'm working on this run for EWJ2 (not for publication but more to get a feel of TASing, though a published run would be awesome) and I'm needing a little assistance on the Lorenzen's Soil part. As of yet, I haven't found any glitches through the soil, though I do notice that Jim's head isn't a point of collision detection. Also, left+right seems to push Jim through certain tight spaces in the soil. This level is definitely a TAS slow down level. At times, you must shoot through the soil to progress, at least as for now. I'm wondering, though, if there's anyway to glitch through it, if not all of it, at least what is the cut off point for when you can. Anyone wanna help a n00b out?

There are a few glitch videos on youtube like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77M0IDGJf1s (Looks like this teleporting stuff only work through a cheat code.. anyway..) Maybe it's worth glitch hunting this game some.

It might also be worth it to look at the PS1/Saturn version. If anything, it has extra horizontal resolution and CD-DA streaming background music (which is nothing short of amazing, easy +1 entertainment point for that alone). EDIT: Added link to the soundtrack on YouTube. Check out the reworked intro and guitar solos on Tangerine and Subterranean, that stuff is mindmeltingly good. Non-synthetic renditions of 1st and 3rd movements of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata are also undoubtedly superior to whatever SNES is capable of.

I was not aware of that, that'll make my next run so much more pleasant. Thanks! Also gonna +1 on that. I know EWJ is notoriously hard, I put it in the same level as Battletoads. Good luck to whoever ends up tackling this!
Currently obsessed with: Mega Man 2 hacks, SFA3, Super Metroid Zero Mission, MM8BDM (Skulltag MegaMan mod, it's amazing!)

The SNES is capable of almost the same when given the same ROM space.

...Which it is not. I guess I should have worded that better; I was talking in context of the two EWJ2 versions and their differences. I'm aware of those audio streaming and byuu's video streaming tests, but they depend on utilizing hardware that never existed, so that's completely orthogonal to the topic of choice of which EWJ2 version to run.

And that's relevant how? An official(-ly endorsed) game like that never existed. Even if it were to be created by enthusiasts, it wouldn't magically become the "proper" or "superior" Earthworm Jim 2, it would simply be an Earthworm Jim 2 hack. We wouldn't be TASing a hacked ROM just for the changed music, it would set a really unwanted precedent. Luckily there is a Saturn version that does it even better anyway! So if I somehow tripped your SNES protection instincts and you would really like to discuss the matter further (there seem to be merits in doing so), ask me in PM so I could cut the relevant posts out to a separate thread or append them to an existing one.
