I have been thinking about this for long. 2-player movies are usually faster due to faster boss fight, while they often suffer from lags. However, they usually show some cooperative moves that is impossible in 1-player movies, so they are likely more acceptable than 1-player ones. According to the history of this site, it seems that 2-player movies are always considered superior to 1-player movies. Once a 2-player movie is submitted, it will always obsolete the old 1-player one if it doesn't suck. It's usually OK because the 2-player one is faster and it shows what the old 1-player one shows as well. Additionally, it seems to just prevent any new 1-player movies on this game to be accepted, since they are considered in the same category and inferior to 2-player ones. Well, this time I just want to ask, if a 1-player movie is done faster than a 2-player movie that is published, will it be accepted? And even obsolete the 2-player one or just be sorted in a new category?

If a 1-player movie is faster than a 2-player movie, then a 2-player movie should be made that uses whatever tricks have been discovered, if at all possible. If that's not possible due to the nature of the trick, then the different movies become separate tiers. The exception to that is if the 2-player movie was done with exceptionally poor optimization, in which case it would be obsoleted.* *I have to qualify this whole paragraph by saying that this is just my observation of how things work here.

So what if the trick is just avoiding lags caused by 2 players? I've found several games very likely to lag when there are two players.

Using two players in a laggy game is usually done for the sake of entertainment anyway, (River City Ransom, for instance) so just being faster wouldn't necessarily obsolete it. It probably wouldn't stop a well-received 1-player run from being published along side the 2-player version, though.

Yes, I think it will be better to publish it alongside the 2-player version than obsolete it.

Not only lag can make a 2 player movie slower. Other characteristics include: - bugs (NES Battletoads level 11) - different characters and powers from p1 and p2 (SNES BS Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman Zero)

What about about 1.5 times as much enemies, such as in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2? I think generally at the site, the fastest possible movie is always published (whether it is 1 player or 2 player). A slower 1 player movie is almost never published, as it is likely to be less entertaining (and also slower in this case). A slower 2 player movie is published if it is more entertaining than the 1 player movie, but doesn't obsolete it.

I agree with Baxter. The FAQ says nothing about this, which leads to this problem. I have been working on a 1-player movie while there is the corresponding 2-player movie published. The only adventage of 1-player run for that game is less lags. I wonder what will happen if I finally make it faster than the 2-player movie and submit it.

Of course there's a gray line: What if the 1-player movie is 1 frame faster than the 2-player movie? My assumption is that it would hardly be published. If so, where is the line?
