Thats what i do as well, it takes longer and its harder (in the sense you have to play all of it over again from where you want to fix something), but it is much simpler.

so let me see if I'm seeing this right. you record your normal demo, then you play it back without read only, and you frame advance to a spot and create a save state, then how do u record over that? i'll play around with it a bit, see what i can figure out. btw, if someone could make a small video tut of re-recording on smw it would help me and some others i bet. i know quite a bit about pc's so u don't have to include the small technical things but I'm just not sure exactly how to re-record and how people perfect jumps like I've seen, maybe slowdown and play if that's possible but I don't know; it probably is and I'm overthinking it, I tend to do that lol. anyways, later.

If you play back a movie (preferably in frame advance like you say) and you make a savestate somewhere, and you load that savestate, if you're not in read only-mode, you will overwrite the ending of that smv and record from where you made the savestate.

Its simple, its the exact same thing as rerecording while you were recording the first time.

ok I didn't want to create a new topic for this since I'm going to talk about smw again.. I was trying to get the Fly-through-stairs trick on video, and I've never done it before, so I just put it on 49% speed and let it record while I did many tries. I thought it would work with some of the flies I did, but it didn't. Is there any special tricks used here? Could anyone explain exactly how to do it? (This is the vid I recorded while trying) {Snes9X v1.43+ v11 (beta17:RC1)}

All that's required to fly through stairs is to be traveling upward at the point of contact with the object. It's easiest to perform if you're flying at the stairs at a high rate of speed, and ascending slowly.
Kirby said so, so it must be true. ( >'.')>

Some tricks can take a while to create (i.e. some BLJ's in SM64 and the pole glitch in SM64).

It's by no means a simple trick to get. Like someone suggested, a high speed makes it easier to succeed, otherwise it just comes down to timing and a bit of luck. My only advice is to use frame advance and catch air on every possible (reasonable) frame, and try it in a few different situations if it doesn't work the first time. All the attempts in the smv looked a little off to me, timing wise, so just keep trying with frame advance and try out every possibility. Also, I suggest using this link to upload smv's. It's great and awesome and everyone uses it because it rocks: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php

Here is a picture. This works best when mario's y velocity is ~0.

I'm new to this site, I used to come here as a guest, but I know what TAS'ing is. I just had a thought about this game. Could a 100% run be done faster if you used 2 player mode? So then you wouldn't have to backtrack across the map a couple of times?

This has been brought up before. The player switching is too costly and you'd lose a lot of time in the long run.

Ah, well it was just a thought.

Hey guys, In October 2006, I started working on an improvement to my 96 exit SMW run. It was going to be prety cool and substantially better than the published run, but many (sometimes partial) restarts and a lack of motivation caused this project to die out, despite me getting lots of help from JXQ, jimsfriend, skamastaG and support from thegreginator, DK64_MASTER and Cardboard. Anyway, there's a new version of this run in the works, so we won't be finishing ours. If anyone wants to watch it though, you can download it here. Feel free to comment of course, thanks for watching. Super Mario World Unfinished 96 Exit Run by Fabian, skamastaG, jimsfriend and JXQ

Who is working on the new run, Mister? Gonna watch this tomorrow, how much faster is it at this point compared to the published run?

I don't have the spreadsheets and stuff any more, but it was somewhere in the 65-70 seconds area, after around 40 exits or so ism is working on the new run.

The spreadsheets say that Fabian's wip is about 52 seconds faster. ISM's latest wip (up to C3) contains lots of additional improvements, and it already beats Fabian's by over a minute and it's awesome :P Fabian's wip has impressed and attracted me very much and made me work on a cape run of smw hacks. I especially love dp4 and awesome for entertainment :) I believe it indicates a new standard of cape-run with heavy use of hopping glitch and cape-attacks.
Retired because of that deletion event. Projects (WIP RIP): VIP3 all-exits "almost capeless yoshiless", VIP2 all-exits, TSRP2 "normal run"

Either I have the worst memory in the world or 52 seconds is the in-level improvement, or something. I definitely thought our improvement was over a minute though. Meh, not important. ISM's (didn't know he spells it with all caps) WIP is indeed awesome. Much of the improvement comes from the trick which ultimately made us quit our run, but he's doing pretty much everything else better than I/we did too.

ISM's run is absolutely amazing. He is also working on SDW 120 I believe. And there is a new small-only run in the works. Yay for SMW.

The Super Mario World Unfinished 96 Exit Run by Fabian, skamastaG, jimsfriend and JXQ is nice. Vanilla Dome 2, the beginning part is unexpected. Amazing! Didn't know that you can fly under the water. In Vanilla Dome 3, didn't know that you can fly under the lava.

So today I was playing super mario world on console. I went into the first castle and the "L" button got stuck down, I hit the controller to get it to stop doing that and then played the level normally (speedrunning it) and the screen did not scroll to the right. It was just odd, but I'm wondering if I could duplicate it. Maybe it could be of some use (if it's not just a hardware issue) EDIT: nevermind, It's just that I didn't hear the scrolling noise because I was paying attention to the controller button. The screen doesn't scroll when your on the edge.

Yeah, L scrolls left, R scrolls right (and iirc pressing both does neither).
