I made these videos a while back, thought I'd share. The thing is, it's impossible to complete some levels without getting rings. But here are a few. Oh, and in Sonic 2 sonic dies but i start again- I didn't realise/forgot about reloading or something but oh well it continues. Sonic 1 - Goes to Act 2-1 but it desynchs half way through that stage Sonic 2 - Goes through to Act 2-1 Sonic 2-2 Goes From 3-1 to 4-1 Sonic 3- Is actually S3&K so use that rom. Goes to 1-2 Sonic and Knuckles - Goes to 1-2 http://www.freewebs.com/bof3genes/NoRingCollection.zip

I'm not certain you are understanding the purpose of the site. Anyways, there's no reason to do a 'no rings' run in sonic just like there's no reason to do a 'no coins' run in mario. If there were some functional reason why avoiding rings would matter (as opposed to avoiding hits), then yes, I could see it, but there isn't, so I don't.

Yeah, I've seen a Super Mario Bros. 1 video that aimed for the least points possible (500, btw. You get twice that from a single mushroom!) ...Keep in mind, it was the concept that was interesting, not the video ;P That said, I'm intrigued as to how many rings you really can avoid... --Wow, I found some of the acrobatics and routes taken pretty entertaining, but the movies definitely lack optimization. S3&K is obviously the best choice, with the shields providing some bonus flexibility, but yes I'll agree that this isn't the sort of movie that would belong on this site as a published movie. As a fun little side project, though, it'd be sure interesting to watch a completed product.

IMO, having a "No Rings" run for Sonic is equivalent to having a "0%" run for Metroid - one of which I am aware has been submitted and accepted here. So why shouldn't you have a no rings run?

Because you can't complete any of the games without picking some up at some stage?

Yeh, that's the annoying thing. I know they're not optomised. At all. But still, I thought it might be entertaining- the no rings is just an excuse to perform stunts and use weird routes that are defined by some sort of rules. I'd really like to see an 'Insane Sonic Stunt video' but it would need some sort of structure to make it view nicely. Just like the speed runs do very nicely, but perhaps the use of a different limiting factor(whilst going as fast as possible) would produce different, but equally entertaining, results.

^ Then have a "Collect as few rings as possible" run. Edit: If possible, can the S3&K one be hex edited to use the No Save slot?

How about a pacifist run? Killing no enemies except for bosses?

Done, http://www.freewebs.com/bof3genes/s3knoring.gmv (turns out Hex editing isn't too hard) As for a 'pacifist run', even though it's a well cool name for it, I fear it would be too easy- enemies aren't particularly difficult to avoid in real time, let alone in TA run. I can't think of anything myself though :/

Awesome :) ... You really should have cut off Hydrocity there. That was just embarrassing. LOL. Edit: I tried my hand at Hydrocity Act 1, using your movie for getting through AIZ. http://host-a.net/getfile.php?usern=inverted&file=s3knoring.gmv

Time to bring this back up. If I were able to complete Sonic 1, using the Knuckles hack, without collecting a single ring, would people watch it? Here's my run through GHZ. For the curious, there's only one level I can't get past without collecting a ring - Labyrinth 2 has a switch covered by a ten-ring box, and I can't find any way past the door it opens without said switch. If anyone can help in this regard, that'd really help.

I'd watch it if it was published. The question is: Would they accept a Sonic Hack? It is my understanding that hacks aren't accepted lightly... but several Mario games have had hacks with runs.. why not Sonic?

I would do an official release, but they're a lot harder (and probably impossible) to complete this task with. For example, Sonic has to pick up seven rings in Marble 2, and five in Scrap Brain 1, which Knuckles can skip entirely. I was also playing around with Sonic 2 and Knuckles but Casino Night 2 (not to mention Metropolis) put paid to that. Sonic 3 and Knuckles probably isn't even worth a look, just because the levels are so big and there's rings everywhere. I couldn't pass Hydrocity 1 when I tried.

Because of the "three M" rule? *decked* Seriously, the S1&K hack is pretty masterfully done. It'd be absurdity to turn it away.

Due to recent revelations courtesy of one JXQ, I started work on the no-ring TAS again in the S1&K hack. GMV here At the moment it's up to Spring Yard 3, but doesn't complete it. It's about a quarter of the way through. it does now. It's reasonably optimised, but there's plenty more work a more experienced TASer could do on it.

You would of course have to spin through the loops but besides that would it be fun if you limited yourself to not reaching the running speed?

Nope. It'd be boring as hell and pointless. Sonic TASes are awesome because of their speed. Limiting that speed removes the awesomeness of the TAS. Topic Fail.

Aside from being boring to watch, it would be incredibly tedious to keep motion to sub-running speed. The only reason the SMB walk movie was interesting was because it proved that you could beat the game without ever touching button B. It also made for a nice April Fool's gag.
Kirby said so, so it must be true. ( >'.')>

I'll try to be a little more tactful and say that Sonic the Tree-Sloth would be about as exciting as it sounds.

Every motion sonic makes on the ground is either running or rolling. I guess the game might be possible to beat while jumping continuously, but it would be incredibly pointless.

IMPO (in my pointless opinion) I hate speedwalks, or walkathons, or stupid things. They suck, I just hate them!
