This is my 2nd attempt to make a TAS of this game. I made this because I got tired of Deign urging me to do so ;P
My first was more an experiment to see how quickly the game could be completed. This one is about 3 minutes slower but adds a lot more bizarre plays and programming errors. In addition, I show an entertaining game of football with a rather surprising ending :)

Improvement over the published movie.

While entertainment is hard to judge, nevertheless I think I managed to improve on Arc's published movie. It shows a more interesting game overall, skips a rather boring coin toss, and it over two minutes shorter. More importantly, it shows more bizzare plays and programming errors in the game. Nearly every play has something unexpected.

Team & Score choice

Hardcore tecmobowlers will have already noticed that I picked the Giants & Bills who were the teams in the Super Bowl the season that this game represents (1991). This game ends with a 20-19 score just like that game. However, it is from very different scoring methods.

Interesting events that might be missed on the first viewing.

  • Early in the 1st quarter I recover a fumble only to be tackled by my own teammates.
  • I go for a flea flicker only to have "flick" it about 10 yards _forward_ into the endzone. This counts as a fumble and not a forwards pass and is an immediate touchback for the other team.
  • Soon after I throw an interception that is then dropped by the defender and it still counts as a touch back
  • I do a flea flicker that that got botched but caused the game to allow me to throw to the rb that made the toss (normally impossible). This results in: QB toss to RB, RB toss to QB, QB toss to RB. Perfectly reasonable playcall >_>
  • The opposing teams gets a TD but my player tackles him so hard he decided that he is one our side and starts running to the other endzone! He falls down at the 3 yard line facing the wrong direction. Apparently the game has been confused as well.
  • In the third quarter, my QB throws an interception then immediately runs to the backfield, smacks the defender and causes a fumble. It is then recovered by my team for a 1st down.
  • Throw a pass to a receiver no more than 1 pixel away and he drops it.
  • Get into an unfortunate 4th and 99 situation. What better time to call.. a play action pass! Gotta fake the run :) Of course I convert this with a 100 yard pass. That QB sure has an arm on him.
  • The game ends when my player gets into the endzone for what should be a TD. Players run around trying to tackle me (including my own team). After being tackled, We win by a game winning....safety?

Goals in order of priority

  • Use the Giants and Bills and end with a score of 20-19 to represent the 1991 Super Bowl
  • Play an entertaining game of football
  • Show off as many bizarre bugs and weird plays as possible
  • Complete the game quickly (mainly, do not waste time)

Summary

  • Playaround
  • Manipulates luck (fumbles and interceptions, as well as CPU AI)
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Genre: Sport
Enjoy, adelikat

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. Oh! I also corrected the ROM name.
  • You indicated Tecmo Superbowl.nes
  • I updated it to Tecmo Super Bowl (U) [!].nes

adelikat: Unfortunately, I am the only judge who is familiar or even remotely interested in this game or the game of "american rugby". While we try to avoid this, I am accepting and publishing my own submission. I apologize if this comes off as a conflict of interest, but I feel it is a better alternative than this remaining in submission limbo.

Being an Aussie I dont know much about American Football, but even without knowing much about the rules, I still found this quite entertaining. Yes for me.

More entertaining than the 44-13 thrashing the Colts were handing to the Ravens that was on tv when I watched this. I particularly like the 4th and 99, with a 119 yard TD pass. And the ending, um... safedown? touchty? was funny. Yes from me. On another note, pink uniforms? Really?

Aside from the rad 99 yard touchdown throw, I found most of this to be pretty boring. It had its moments, but it didn't have many. Sorry broheim. Meh.

My favorite part was on the 4th and 99, where the quarterback drops into the pocket, and one of the defensive linemen runs out of breath and stops a few yards in front of the QB. Bored, the QB decides to tackle the tired defender for fun while waiting for the wide receiver to complete his route. Without knowing the rules of football and paying pretty close attention to some of the plays, it's really easy to miss some of the surprising things in this movie. There was also a fluke with this FCM early in its production, created by normal use of FCEU, which inserted an extra delta byte that extended one of the button presses by about 40,000 frames. And here I was thinking I saw all the problems FCEU could cause to FCMs! (Go Dolphins for the 2007 perfect season!)

As a tecmo veteran, I was amazed at how many fumbles you were able to cause and how exact you were able to make them. Favorite part of the movie was the first extra point where you aim completely right and the guy on the left somehow still blocks it. Gotta love it! The second extra point was pretty funny as well. The 99 yard pass wasn't that impressive to me since everyone who has played tecmo knows about the ridiculousness of dropping way back and throwing it all the way from endzone to endzone. I mean, not like you can stand on the 1 yard line and do it, but its more realistic than the rest of the movie. Also LOL at Jamie Mueller scoring a touchdown. Wow is he fucking slow. 80 yard field goal what? lol! this movie was amazing, yes vote.

It was a pretty cool run but there was too many fumbles! Actually, all the fumbles were pretty cool to see since that's a bit time consuming finding what frame to get tackled on or vice versa, I assume anyway. There were quite a few plays that were just outrageous and then there were some that were just Tecmo Superbowl which is a good balance; you've got your highs and lows ;) . Overall, I thought it came out superb so yes vote, my friend. One last thing. Why not try a run like this on Pro Bowl and 2-Players? I mean, the Pro Bowl and 2-Players wouldn't show favoritism (not until the end but it doesn't matter, at least to me it doesn't) and you have the better players of Tecmo Superbowl at your disposal (also doesn't matter, heh, but the quicker gain in speed might be more interesting) and, AND, THE MUSIC'S DIFFERENT THAN THE ORIGINAL GAME'S! You also might be able to pull off more interesting things in 2-player mode but it also may be a bit much to see the 2nd player doing something out of the ordinary while the rest of the team are a bunch of head hunters... I dunno. (This is just a bunch of crap that I thought about a bit when watching this run, I don't expect it to be taken at all into consideration.)

Heheh, my favorites were the 60 yard field goal, 100 yard pass and getting a safety when you should have had a touchtown.

During the first 2 quarters I started getting ideas of possible funny things that could be done. Low and behold, most of them occurred during the last 2 quarters. An excellent job with such a quirky game.

He shouldn't have scored at all. He didn't even have the ball! That was the best part of the movie though. The field goal was also something I haven't seen before. As someone who's pretty familiar with this game, I was disappointed that there wasn't more quirky player movements. I am more used to the Super Nintendo game, but I think the engines are fairly similar. If you could work in some infinite sliding after touchdowns and other absurd defender actions, that would be a nice touch. Some of the plays were fairly boring, which shouldn't be the case in a movie like this. On the other hand, I haven't watched the old movie in a while, but I think this one took better advantage of available glitches, whereas the old movie spent a lot of time causing fumbles. I'd rather see this movie published, but I do think it could look even better. I'd give it a yes vote for showing a few things that I haven't seen before.

Safety FTW! [/cliche] I laughed several times; haven't seen the current movie but this was sweet. Good work.

Technically this is true. However, due to some glitching, luck manipulation, and care moving, I have convinced the game that both my player and the CPU player have the ball! It is actually a death race to the endzone. Had the cpu got to his endzone first it would have been a touchdown. Since I got to my endzone and tackled before then, the game awards me a safety.

I quite liked the multiple fumbles you did, as well as that really long 100 yard throw you did, which earned you a touchdown. I know they say graphics don't make a game, but in this game you're dependent on them. Since the sprites constantly blink (yes, a common NES flaw) and often they continually overlay each other, making the action very difficult to follow. One suggestion might be to use on of the Madden games on the Genesis as that has a lot of quirks like the ambulance driving onto the field and knocking away everyone in its path. Still, a lot better than its predeccessor so I'll vote yes. Now for some soccer !!!

Voted yes. It would be nice if some of the hard to follow things (such as being tackled by your own team) were included with subtitles when the run is published. Really cool Glitches. Also hilarious that you matched the Super Bowl of the year TSB came out. I doubt they had 2 balls on the field in that game.

I must agree. Though to be fair, I've never played the game. Still, in my opinion, it was a 'Meh' at best. Sorry. :/

Throughly entertaining. The 99 yard pass though was the highlight. What is the world record for distance anyway?
I think i've watched about 70% of the TAS's on this site... It's become one of the first sites I check daily for updates. I'm going to start posting more.

This movie sucks. Voting no. Oh wait, nevermind. This one's actually fun to watch, complete with a ton of utterly fucked up plays and all kinds of other nonsense. I'm voting yes. Imagine that.

I voted yes. The random touchbacks, field goal, and final play were mesmerizing if you've spent any time playing this classic as a kid.
