Take your time. I don't think I'm going to have any extensive amounts of time on my hands until after Thanksgiving.

Game completed in 2:21:14. Nifboy can maybe squeeze 5 minutes off or even more if he knows secret shortcuts. Where I lost much time: Crossroads to and back from Water Shrine - 5s Heart collected at the end of Water Shrine - 16s! Magic Sword - 54s! (Recharged strike is two times stronger, big deal?) Statue of Gaia in Thieves Hideout - 26s (Why did I get this?) Not getting Golden Statue in Lake Shrine - 10-13s Lantern in King Nole's Palace - 7s Those alone add up to two minutes of pure mistakes! Another few minutes can be achieved in improved fights. You can tell me if you see other obvious mistakes.

Oh *wow*. Those final bosses take a metric tonne of time to kill. Well, I know what to do with the money, anyway; buy Golden Statues (Shop in Ryuma, 200/ea).

Today I have watch the beginning from the posted run and remember again the bathing scene in the Japan version. Luck, that the USA Save and Japan Save is compatible, so I stop the movie before he enter the castle and save in the town. Now I have make a SaveState in the Japan game infront of the bathing scene. Just enter the room wait while the both enemies talking and enter the next rooms till you see the woman bathing. Landstalker (J) - bathing scene You see it only, when the banquet is ready and before you enter the banquet. Just go upstairs again and the woman infront of the door is gone. And this is not the only different in the game as I know. The witch house is too different, where you must play as a dog. Its much harder.

Hehe. The enemies are singing about how hot Carla is. And when you enter her room she says she has been waiting and invites you into the bath. If you answer yes Friday dazzles you (out of jealousy I guess). If you say yes she says something about noone refusing her in 100 years, and she calls for her goons to revenge her. It also looks like Nigel is named Lyle in this version. The two baddies names are also different, Goose and Zuwamu. >The witch house is too different, where you must play as a dog. Its much harder. This is the same in the European version at least, because I remember that place being impossible when I played it on console too.

Thanks for the translation, because I don't understand japanese. I have not watch the complete run yet, so I don't know how it is in the witch house here. I played only the Japan Version and the European Version (German). And the Japan Version was very very hard, but I have done it on the console too after some tries. The German Version was no problem.

I tried it just the other day and it worked fine. You're doing all the obvious stuff? i.e. You're using a TAS version of Gens, controller settings match movie, sound rate is at 44100, using the right rom, etc. ? Also, I'd like to try this game eventually. I think it could be done in under 2 hours. A lot of the movement seemed (slightly) unoptimized, and I had some other ideas for saving time. It would probably pay off to get more lifestock, especially early in the game.

Can someone actually make a movie of this and upload as mpeg or avi? I can't get the gmv to work properly.

For someone to make an AVI/MPEG and upload it is probably a lot more work than for you to get your emulator working properly. Download the latest Gens version from Emulator Homepages, and make sure you have a good ROM, marked (U) [!], or just (U).

just curiosity: Someone has confirmed that the bath scene is in the USA version too, all you have to do is gameshark your way inside that room. It's on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sD8xKErGhyA

I made the AVI : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VT81WKU1 Since it's not an official release I didn't add a logo at the begining but there's some subtitles for the credits. I like this game. I intend to post the Green Maze part on youtube, I suppose there's no problems with that ?

I discovered a very well optimized Landstalker TAS made by a japanese player and posted on Nico Nico Douga : http://syumigame.blog88.fc2.com/blog-entry-3551.html The game is broken and completed in 1:18, 1 hour faster than the first attempt here ! some of the few tricks I noticed : - in dungeons he can pass through doors by being hit by ennemies. - thanks to that, keys can be saved for later (especially for other dungeons!) - after dying in front of one of those special trees (which can only be cut with the "axe magic") he can go through it ! He used once the Death Statue to poison himself because there were no enemies around. Thus the crypt, Mir's Tower and some other places are skipped. I'd like to see this run on tasvideo.org. I think it can be improved a little more : in the first video at 11'42 he forgot to jump from the platform instead of using the stairs. Is anyone interested ?

>Is anyone interested ? :O Hell yes. I couldn't watch the movie very well (too choppy), but what you wrote about it sounds very good. I would love to see it submitted here... perhaps it is possible to get hold of it or the author somehow?

Unfortunately I don't know how to contact the author. Although he uses the term "TAS" for his video, as far as I know, he has not submitted his run here. His nickname on niconicodouga is ニコ ("Nico") : http://www.nicovideo.jp/user/35814/ (I think you must be logged in to view the page ) I wonder if anyone has an idea to change the situation ?

So I've read through the Landstalker thread, and watched the Landstalker run on niconico. And the only reasonable conclusion I can now come to is: It's about time tasvideos had a Landstalker run. (throws name into the hat) Now onto the type of run I'm envisioning. It looked like momentum kind of fizzled out on here once the niconico any% TAS was found and posted. Admittedly, it's very good, and can improved via minor optimizations and correcting some mistakes the runner made. However, I've gotta say that doesn't sound appealing to me. Reason being: The any% has already been done, and I'm not interested in striving to obsolete something that likely won't even shave off a minute or so. I want to break new ground and take on something with more of a challenge. So I'm leaning towards either a "non-sequence break" run (no glitching through the axe magic trees), or a 100%. 100% seems iffy and ambiguous, as collecting every last treasure/item/etc. doesn't sound like the most entertaining option, on paper. Maybe you guys can help me here in better defining a branch...? I also want to run the USA version. With that said, looks like this project will have to start from scratch (unless someone wants to pay MaTO's bills and unfreeze his website).

I made a brief WIP that got past the intro cave, and I'm now in Massan (20,189 frames): http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/19711401637467247 Due to the shorter Japanese text, I'm about 555 frames behind the most recent any% TAS uploaded to niconico. However, I'm around 75-80 frames faster, gameplay wise, due to better movement and creative use of jumping to reach higher platforms quicker. I'm going to stick with the USA version, due to preference on the language. As I mentioned in the last post, I also intend to do a category besides the any%. If I can narrow down a set standard for 100%, I'll likely work toward that (all life stocks, quest items, events & dungeons, etc.). This should be a fun project! Aside from DTC5, this will be my first platformer; which has added a nice challenging element. I hope to have this one done...sometime in 2015 :)

Waterfall Shrine completed, and now headed towards Gumi Village (33583 frames): http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/19751186461339219 I mentioned a lot of this on my user file comments, but there are already numerous gameplay improvements over the niconico any% TAS. The hidden Life Stock in Massan is obtained immediately, and the Waterfall Shrine is much more optimized in terms of movements and the use of a clever shortcut I found which saved around 3-4 seconds near the beginning. Slime/enemy movements can be manipulated depending on which frame you jump, slash, or do both. It's just a matter of trial & error and working toward getting the outcome you desire. As for a 100% branch, I've narrowed that down to obtaining all Life Stocks, equipment, and completing all lineal and optional side-quests. This is based on a 100% RTA a runner named ccpato did a short while back (linked in my user file upload). Next WIP will have the Swamp Shrine completed--which I'm expecting will include a lot of new time-savers. edit 2: Since my first teaser fell through (looks to be impossible to access the dungeon in Massan early...), I decided to swap with a suitable replacement;)

Swamp Shrine done! (60227 frames): http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/19932457799831151 As I have mentioned in my user file description, there are a whole load of improvements over the niconico any% TAS. The Swamp Shrine, alone, is about 11 seconds faster, despite the 100% branch and language differences. Fights, puzzle solutions, sequence breaking; almost everything that could be improved has been made, to the best of my ability. Hope everyone enjoys, so far :)
