I posted a topic on the Speed Demos Archive forum about this, they referred me here.
The referrer said that pj64 and mupen64 are similar, so hopefully that is correct and I can get help. If not, if either of my problems can be resolved by using mupen, please tell me so and tell me if there's anything I'll need to do to get it resolved or if it's resolved already. Anyway, here's my post from SDA:
" I've noticed that whenever I shut the lid on my laptop or leave it open but go away for a while so that it goes into Sleep Mode, when I resume Project 64, the sound of the game is still playing but the picture isn't there. The PJ64 screen is just all black. Is there a way to fix this? I don't like having to close and re-open PJ64 all the time, which is a LOT, because I often close my top every half hour or so.
I want to be able to do Quick Spins as well. I don't have an Analog Stick and I don't plan on buying one. I tried setting my analog stick controls to my mouse and then making shortcuts with my directional pad so that I can move as usual when I'm not doing a Quick Spin, but when I did so my mouse cursor completely vanishes from my screen on all windows making simultaneous internet browsing and whatnot impossible for me. Aside from that fact, it also was very unresponsive and it would only work once every five or six tries, which, by the time I get it to work, may as well have just been a charge-up spin attack. This may be because I lowered my dead zone to 60% to make aiming the Hero's Bow / Hookshot, but I'm not sure."
Thanks to anybody who can help.
I think Mupen 64 would go blank on my computer after the screensaver had appeared, but I could get the picture back by changing some setting on the video plugin such as resolution. Try messing with that first.

This sounds like a Vista thing. Basically the Direct3D viewport just screws over when the computer goes through the login screen. Solution: switch to an OpenGL video plugin and your problems will be 'solved'. glN64 works nicely for most games, but Rice in OpenGL mode is quite nice too.
Also, I hate your name with a passion.

If you're serious about gaming on an emulator I suggest that you buy a USB controller. If you want to persist with trying to quick spin with a keyboard use the directional keys rather than the mouse. Up, right, down and left + B for three frames apiece does it optimally and there is leeway either side of that. If you are fast, or are using slowdown, it should be fairly unproblematic.
lol, TP is an awesome game but Midna just sucks. She's always interrupting you with useless cutscenes and information. =[
Thank you for your help on the blank screen thing.
I've got no idea how to do a slowdown on pj64, and I tried doing it with the directional keys exactly like that lastnight (I found it on the Majora's Mask thread) but it didn't work, presumably because I couldn't hold them down for only 3 frames.
Forgive my computer noobishness but, by USB controller, do you mean an actual mouse? Or are you referring to an analog stick?

I don't use PJ64 so I can't help you with the hotkeys, but like I said there is leeway outside the 3 frames so a fast finger would do it.
A USB controller is not a mouse, but one would be forgiven for the misconception. Curiously, it is a controller that connects to your computer via the USB interface.

I had this exact problem before, until a friend of mine showed me how to solve it. Here's how you do it:
1. Open up the control panel.
2. Open "Energy options" (or something like that, I have the swedish version of XP so I'm not sure what the name is in english".
3. You should now be in a window that looks like this, (but in english of course) where you can change when and how you want your computer to enter sleep mode and other things.
Good luck!
