River City Ransom is a goofy game which deserves a goofy TAS.
Emulator used: FCEU 0.98.16
Does not aim for fastest time
Plays on Novice level
Uses time to save trashcan
We looked at previous submissions and demonstrations of this game and tried to include the most entertaining parts of what was available, and add in a few ideas of our own along the way. Hopefully you'll get a kick out of it.
Bonus: Watch this run with the option "Allow more than 8 sprites per scanline" checked to make it easier to see when there are many sprites on the screen at once. This option is located in the main menu under Config -> Video.
(Changing this option may require an emulator restart if the colors get messed up, but it will save this setting.)
Those who say that "[this movie] doesn't belong on this site" can go read WhyAndHow again.
A movie is entertaining when it is:
* Interesting (not slow, boring, or repetitive)
* Surprising (does the unexpected)
* Skillful (handles awkward situations efficiently and creatively)
and
our main goal is to create movies that are beautiful to watch.
In my opinion, this site needs more movies like this. This is the ideal.
However, such movies pose a judging problem. Movies that compete for speed
are easy to compare; just a scalar number against a scalar number.
But play-around movies like this; if you receive a couple of them, what should you
do? How can you judge them and decide which ones to keep and which ones to discard?
This is all politics, and that's where this submission is stuck at.
Does it honestly deserve the place it's aiming at?
Even the voting feedback does not make the decision all that clear.
We have to remember all the kind of bias that exists in the votes.
(Indeed, judging is not a democratic process;
the votes are there just to give an idea of audience reception.)
I am accepting this movie on the following grounds:
The votes have been positive for the most part.
The movie is consistent with the message of this site…
Extreme hilarity and great playing around. Without movies like this, TASvideos may as well just be a scoreboard site with lowest framecounts.
Easy yes vote. Now for a Mario Paint submission.
I thought, more recently, it was more of a "high scores" chart for games, but I suppose they're basically the same.
But, Mario Paint? Quickest to replicate the Mona Lisa and some old classical song, and make a game with animations?
Now that'd be something.

It was hard to decide what to vote. First, I would like to acknowledge both of you for doing something bold, something refreshing, something pretty entertaining and something out of the ordinary. I especially liked the part of playing baseball :) In the end, I felt it was just a touch too much, but thats probably due to this old rascal being used too much expecting a run getting finished quickly as possible. I definitely would like to see this run getting published alongside Chamales run. I give this a positive meh vote.
Meh vote because it was interesting, but if there's a new category created for "pure entertainment" videos (concept demo just doesn't fit the bill :P), I'd upgrade the meh to a yes.
A new category for videos might spice up the submissions overall; making players optimize for entertainment as opposed to frame-perfection may entice some new users to start TASing.

You could do the flyswatter minigame, if nothing else. But does that even end? And do rerecords support the mouse (or Super Scope, for that matter)? Well, one way to find out...
[edit]
Aaaaand the answer is no. In fact, just using the mouse at low speeds proves very difficult, even if mouse movements WERE stored in movie data. Oh well, it was an interesting thought.

I made one when testing mouse rerecording support in zsnes for Nach a long time ago, but it's really worth watching a run of it and definitely not worth publishing.

No way, its fastest possible or nothin.
Is this sarcasm?
No, its not.
Okay. I had a string of insults here but I think I'll surpress the side of me with my head in my hands to remind you that the life blood of these kind of sites is CONTENT. Entertainment is subjective, but arguably more important than speed. Most people agree on this, yet we get lots of boring as fuck, but very fast videos published. I'm not sure what's more important; a video that entertains 60-80% of the community despite having non-speed goals or a dreadfully boring video that while technically accurate, is not at all entertaining to watch and at best only appeals to those who play the game itself.
I dunno about you, but I'm willing to throw the dice a few times on entertainment videos.
Of course, not everyone will like them, but from what I can see, more people would like this kind of video than say, a speed run of Dark Castle. Here we are, still publishing 6 frame time savers on really shitty, boring games that honestly no one wants to see, and yet there's a debate about whether a video that is entertaining to 60-80% of the community is worth publishing or not. Unbelievable.
EDIT: Clarification - I believe the "shitty, boring games" SHOULD have their speed runs published. After all, the site, by precedent, is based around speed runs and every game, no matter how junky (okay, there might be some exceptions to that) should have a high quality tool-assisted speed run published. Period. My qualm is specifically with how the site emphasises that they want to focus more on entertainment than frame-perfection (correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've seen, the "entertainment" category on voting on a rating seems to have more weight than "technical quality" category when it comes to calculating the overall rating) [see - DKC2 run. A few frames were sacrificed in order to show off a strange quirk in Krow's Nest, which was one of my favourite parts of the whole run].
I'm not so annoyed with people who believe that this should be a speed run site first and foremost. I might in fact even be in said boat. It's the closed minded, staunch opposition to anything that isn't either a fastest speed or a "concept demo" [see - Air] that really gets me; the sheer rejection of a "non-speed entertainment" category on the whole that gets me. Consider this:
The entertainment category would take away nothing AWAY from the site. If you don't like it, ignore it. Speed runs will still be the focus. If entertainment videos turn out to be a novelty fad, they'll fade away and they'll be done and gone. I'm not sure what the NEGATIVE of the whole category is in the first place. If you can present one, I'll take it in to consideration. For now, I just don't see the issue. At all.

First off, I agree with you in thinking we should broaden our horizons and look into games with entertainment more as a focus. However, some people (myself included) find entertainment knowing that a game has been beaten in the absolute shortest time possible. So those 6 frame improvements, while not changing the movie much, increases my entertainment from it by simply knowing it's kicked the game's ass that much more.
i can't believe people voting no when they had fun watching.
The poll say: Did you like watching this movie?
I love it, yes vote.
People vote on there own terms in reality and votes are manipulated in a multitude of ways.
For example I interpret the question as being...
Do you think the movie was good, fun to watch and should it be published?
In this instance for me it was no to all these parts.

If someone wants to setup a simalar site to speedruns.net then they can. This will create huge inconisities in future publications i.e. Why is X published and Y rejected?

All submissions have a yes vote bias for obvious reasons.

That's fine, but understand that you're not in the majority here. I'm not sure what your take on the "entertainment" category on the whole is, but understand the basic idea of majority rule. A video with this kind of voting record, if it was a speed video, is probably not of high enough quality to publish. However, when we're looking a video made purely to entertain, we have to look at it much differently; 30 yes votes and 10 no votes would likely indicate an achievement of the goal: to entertain. If it was like that on a speed video, it would likely mean that it entertained but had a lot of problems and could probably be redone much better.
I'm not sure how I got started on this rant so I'll stop here.
Kles's post was interesting for me. It reminded me of the phenomenon of a previously published movie having an effect on the publishability of a new movie.
If aiming for speed, then all of these runs should be accepted and published, provided their technical quality is substantial. If aiming for entertainment, then new runs improving on less entertaining runs should not be accepted and published.
But, these less entertaining runs are published. Yet, goals of the site as given by WhyAndHow are to "create art and provide entertainment." As mmbossman said, speed is a good way to provide movies like this with entertainment. So, why not publish other movies which are fast, but not as entertaining otherwise?
In most cases, it seems that new runs have to satisfy both speed and entertainment requirements to be accepted and published. But this is not true for all cases, specifically, the movies which are obsoleting a movie that was published back in the times when any movie was published. Overall, that seems contradictory to me.
Also, AKA, your self-proclaimed reasons for voting are inconsistent with the reason you referenced for your vote on this movie.
<Swordless> Go hug a tree, you vegetarian (I bet you really are one)
Ok if for some people the poll by any means says "should be published" then we shouldnt have judges, the judges decide if a movie is published based on speed, damage taking or not taken, etc.
And they use the general audience (us) to get an idea if a movie is entertaining, which is why the poll asks if you enjoy the movie or not. And by this means, entertainment is a very subjective point, thats why the judge cant judge by himself if a movie is entertaining. Sure, if for you a movie that is slow is not entertaining, then by all means vote no, but if you are entertained by it no matter how slow it is, dont take in account that it is slow, cause thats not the question addressed here.
I dont know, maybe the poll is actually "should the movie be published" but i dont read that anywhere
P.s: sorry my english is bad, im chilean.
