Not to nitpick, but I was unwaware that life was 60Hz. I mean if it was, what would be the point of 70/75/85Hz on monitors?
<adelikat> I am annoyed at my irc statements ending up in forums & sigs

I guess the same reason they make very high-megapixel cameras, though the human eye can basically see only 5 megapixels. Unless Zurreco was joking.

In many ways, life is like a video game. 1. A beginning cut scene 2. Main objective 3. Secondary objective 4. A means to get to those goals. 5. Life has a frame rate of 60f/s 6. A ending cutscene 7. Credits? The main difference. Life has no reset button. (Good ol' Resetti)

Nope. You're spot on. Just because things are beyond human ability doesn't mean that they don't have applications beyond that.

Can't some atoms vibrate faster than this?

I don't know if it's just me, or if it's cause I'm new at TASing, but after about an hour (sometimes longer) of using the frame advance, when I get off the computer, it feels like everything is going in frame advance speed for about 5 or 10 minutes. It's an odd feeling, but it happens when I've been working on my run for too long. I was wondering if anybody else gets this?
Yeah. It lasts a couple minutes, if I've been playing at a constant speed of, say, 17%. Hard to play normally after that. As for the "brain framerate" question, this should interest you.

I was just playing the Crysis demo with the settings jacked up to High, and it was pretty choppy, but when I whipped the mouse around and the motion blur kicked in, it looked noticeably smoother, even though the framerate was probably lower.

[edit] Totally missed the above link, egads! Oh well, I'll leave the comment in, anyway. [/edit] As an aside, human eyes detect movement at a greater rate of speed than 60Hz. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 70Hz is the typical break-off point, though some cases can stretch into the 80's. Also, if you REALLY want to have some fun, throw the game back into full speed after an extended frame advance session.

I like how that doesn't really answer the question. And by "I like how," I mean "I don't like how."

I've never experienced this effect, but it's often happened that while I'm tasing my mind will wander, and for several minutes I continue (usually luck manipulating) without having any clue what I've just done, or if I had actually found what I was looking for and missed it. Perhaps one of the downfalls of having an 'automated' manipulation process (I've actually calculated an average of 15 re-records per minute for a one hour session (over 900 total)). This usually signifies when it's time to take a break.

Thats assuming that you come back after dying. Besides, killing yourself would cause a bad life for you in the next one wouldn't it?

<Ob. Off-topic> No, it's power-off. Reset button would imply a new fresh start. I say procreation is the reset button. It allows the offspring to start from scratch without the burden of accumulated illnesses, learned misconceptions, traumas etc. gained by the parents (with certain exceptions though). It is the renewal. Suicide is an erase without backup.

yeah, i used to go nuts too when i first started to TAS and use computers... like when i dropped a sand-witch on the floor i tried to undo it, and when trying to find something in a book i was like "wtf", where's the search button... maybe some day we can do stuff like that in real life.

Depends what religion you are. Reincarnation would let you start over. :P

The couple of times that I've bothered to use frame advance everything seemed to be going much faster afterwards. Also, I'll kill the next poster who continues the theology tangent.

Do the lessons of Animal Crossing mean nothing to you? Sorry RT.

When I used to play FPS games a lot, I would go through real life wanting to zoom in on things. It was weird... I'd stare at things and wonder for half a second why they're not showing up in more detail. My hand would sometimes even twitch a little, trying to hit the right mouse button I guess.

For some reason this reminded me of a mecha game for the Xbox called Steel Battalion where, if you didn't push the eject button when you were about to blow up, you would not only die but the game would erase all of your saved data.
