Which one do you guys normally use to tas/play games? I like using a USB controller, but would the keyboard be better when it comes to tasing, or is it up to the player which they want to use? Thanks in advance.

I always use the keyboard for TASing, however I use my USB controller for PSX and N64 casual playing.

QFT edit: I also will use the keyboard for playing NES and GBA games, but for fast- paced games I find I have to use a controller to be any good.

I TAS with my gamepad, but when it comes to controlling two characters at the same time, I use the keyboard for player 2. I also play games with my gamepad. Though some games, like the older Zelda games, works fine to play with the keyboard if I have to.

I'd use my gamepad but I'm having some issues, so I'm stuck with keyboard.

Back when I used to play games on znes, I used a keyboard. I usually TAS but don't play games on my computer. So for TASing, I use the keyboard for snes, gens, and gba. For N64, I use the keyboard, USB controller, and TAS Input Plugin all at the same time.

I've got some awesome arcade-style joysticks that I use for normal playing, but, I'm finding them not terribly suited for TASing. Maybe I just need to get used to it.

Use a keyboard mostly, except from where I'm doing 2p TASing.

Even for 2P TAS, I use the keyboard for both. For my RCR TAS, I set WASD as up, left, down, right for P2. I had M and N as A and B, and Z and X for P1's A and B. It was fine.

I've never really liked using a gamepad for anything other than console gaming. In fact, if given the choice, I probably would prefer the keyboard for that as well. There are two games for which I can legitimately say I'm pretty good at them: Rockman and Street Fighter Alpha 3. I'm no longer playing them, but when I did, I used a keyboard. I played a pretty mean V-ism Akuma, too...

For playing, I typically stick to a gamepad. Depending on the situation, I'll either use an N64 controller, DualShock2, or the Saturn-style Vampire Chronicles controller. I also have an adaptor for Xbox controllers, but I never really use it much. For TASing, I'm more likely to use my Logitech keyboard than anything else, because it's more convenient when using hotkeys. The ability to make use of left+right and up+down where applicable is an added bonus.

Both! Place the controlleror keyboard on the floor and use your foot so it acts like a pedal for frame advance and use the other for the actual gameplay!

I prefer USB controller. It's so much easier to give inputs with the fitting velocity. My hand often hurts after playing with a keyboard.
Contra Force deserves a TAS. D':

For 2P games, I like to use the Wii Classic Controller (via Bluetooth). It's perfect: Left analog stick for Player 1, L and ZL for Player 1's A and B, Right stick, R, and ZR for Player 2.

Despite having had a console before a PC, ironically I prefer playing with the keyboard and tasing with a controller. However, I can only tas with a game pad, when there is no right/left glitch and the emulator allows to change the current savestate (like gens). I then use L1/L2 to change the savestate, L2 for frame advance, R2 to load, the top one of the 4 main buttons to save and the select button to unpause. Since genesis only has 3 buttons, this is sufficient to tas and I'm much faster that way. One downside of this method is, that due to the savestate circling, I can't make a specific savestate at the beginning of an level, which means, that I have to fastforward through the whole movie, when I want to rewatch the last level. When I'm tasing snes, vba or N64, I also use the keyboard though.

I've always favored a keyboard for everything except playing Smash TV and Cave Story. My setup is to use the numeric and directional keys as the d-pad for players 1 and 2, with ASDF/QWER as player 1's XYBA/Select start L+R buttons. Player 2's buttons are the same mapping, shifted four to the right. Spacebar is frame advance, save slot 0 and load slot 0 are Z and X. I wonder if I shouldn't have reversed player 2's buttons, or interlaced the two mappings, so as to reduce the distance between long reaches. Hmm.

I always found it hard to imagine how it is even possible for one to play Rockman so skillfully with a keyboard. I prefer using a gamepad for both playing and TASing (no, I don't have any published TASes). Even for 2player TAS I used a gamepad.
