I was hoping that this was going to become a big debate about "antisocial" vs "unsocial", which are two very different things that people confuse too often. Looks like I was wrong.

According to Finalfighter, there are many people in Japan who think that publishing video captures from video games breaks the (copyright?) law. Apparently, even someone has been arrested because of it. The copyright laws are much tighter in Japan than they are in many other countries. It can easily be seen for example by browsing the Japanese Wikipedia; it has no (or very few) image captures of video games (and very few images in general) because of the legal issues. According to Finalfighter, I-Filter is a software installed in many places where children might use computers, and as such, it takes a very steep line in which things to censor.

This is probably true for things like screen captures, sound recordings, and other things that are considered fair use in other countries, but it is also much, much more leniant than, for example, US law, with regards to parody and fanworks.

It has always been an open question how "legal" any of the videos published here are. One thing, however, is quite clear, as far as I know: Publishing entire soundtracks, as happens with most of the videos, is - at least technically speaking - illegal in most western countries. *Downloading* such a piece of music may or may not be legal depending on the country (I think the current copyright in Finland is a bit fuzzy about that, but with the old copyright it was legal), but *distributing* such a piece of music is illegal in most western countries. I actually have no idea about the graphics. A couple of screenshots may be seen as fair use in most countries and a lawsuit would probably never hold in court, but we are not distributing a few screenshots but in the worst case several hours worth of the game's graphics. I'm only speaking from a technical point of view, of course. I doubt any copyright holder would care about these videos. And even if someone did, he would probably (well, hopefully) just contact the site administrator to make him remove the offending video. AFAIK this has yet to happen, so I suppose they are mostly ok with it. In Finland, however, there's nowadays a small risk. Even if the actual copyright owner doesn't care, the "Finnish RIAA", teosto, has the power to do some harm, even in cases where they don't have *any* rights to the music in question. This has been seen in practice many times. For example, recently an individual got a fine of several thousands of euros for downloaded mp3s even though teosto couldn't prove they had any ownership to those. It's getting crazy around here, as crazy as in the US.

In Canada, as long as something is on an obsolete system, it's fine. With current systems (GBA is the only one that counts), as long as it does not "negatively impact" someone's decision to purchase the games, it's fine. Hell, I've bought GBA games just because of runs I've seen of them!

Yeah, but I-Filter didn't say "copyright violation", it said "illegal software".

That reminds me. Apparently the US Air Force blocks sourceforge.net for "freeware and shareware." That's apparently a bad thing.

That reminds me of an e-mail someone got from nintendo of somewhere saying that "yes, it is ok to distribute videos of old games".

It would be interesting to see the exact law section which says that.

Turns out Canada has no specific law on video games. Our Prime Minister, Stephen "Immediately" Harper (2-year-old election promise. Long story) still hasn't passed the new bill into law. However, the new bill would still make tasvideos perfectly legal, as giving out movies made from ROMs is fine, and only a court order can order the removal of a specific video, not "We want all these videos taken down". Maybe Bisqwit should move to Canada :)

False. There are laws about video games.

Actually, bittorrent software itself isn't illegal any more than downloading a file is. Although I guess it might be in Japan.

I think that was his point. Bittorrent invokes the feeling of illegality among the closed-minded (people who write filtering software).

I doubt any country has any law about video games in particular, only about software in general. Are you trying to say that Canada has no laws regarding computer software at all?

Well, a analysis distantly connecting this I-filter thing to Nintendo came back positive! OMG! On another note, I am guessing its either Bittorrent or some other program on biqswit.iki.fi.

I found something interesting. A site that rates websites (as in, PG, G, PG-13, etc). Parts of tasvideos.org are rated R. Particularly the discussion on the Altered Beast TAS which was so controversial a while ago, rated R for repeated uses of the words sex and porn.

Remember that the discussion forums here are not indexed by any web spider / search engine, and I prefer to keep it that way, to prevent spambot invasions and to keep search engine assisted cracking attempters away. Therefore, chances are that none of the pages on the TASvideos forums are evaluated by any "content rating" services unless you explicitly submit the URLs there.

That means that someone did, but who? Anyway, it isnt like most people swear too much or say sex stuff all the time, only occasionally and not very loudly.
