Now that the new Snes9x is out, I would like to make a Gradius 3 run similiar to Morimoto's Gradius 1 run. Is anyone interested? I already played the first stage on arcade difficulty. I pick only speedups, and the E. laser for the bosses (destroys really fast). I don't go to bonus stages, because they are boring and i think they take more time. What do you think?

Actually, if you're going for Morimoto-style speed-only, I'd like to see how many of the point pods in the bonus levels you can clear out before those evil quick-generating bubble walls come to smash you. More speedy acrobatics never hurt anybody...LOL =P That, and I wanna see what the level 7 (high-speed level) bonus stage looks like, 'cause I can never seem to get it...^_^'

I still think it would get boring because the bonus stages are basically all the same, and the people who have not played the game don't get to see the real stage endings and bosses. besides collecting as many pods as much possible is hard if you don't pick any power ups, you'd need couple options and a better laser like twin laser to clear the walls. And as I said, going to the bonus stages makes the game longer anyway...

Hmm, good point...the lack of options and the e.laser's not-so-great fire rate isn't good at all against the walls...might be best to leave 'em out then. Besides the point here is to not get many powerups anyway, so going into an area full of them might appear to be a strange move to begin with...=P One other thing I remembered...though I've never tried it myself, I hear Arcade difficulty STILL keeps getting harder when you beat it, until the 4th loop (5th loop and above are said to be the same as the 4th)...How to handle that though? If you wanted to show yourself PWNing said really-really-hardest difficulty, you'd either have to start from a savestate or play through the whole game 4-5 times...o_O

It is true the game gets even harder, but i think the only way it gets harder is that the enemies release more bullets. And there never will be so many bullets that you couldn't dodge them, so I think people will get the idea from 1st loop just as good ;> Just cleared stage 3 :>

I submitted the movie (actually many days ago), so if you want to check it out, it is there. :>

I just downloaded this movie and it's really cool but it's not 100% kills, at about 7:20 into the movie an enemy goes off the left side of the screen, unkilled

there are actually a few missed kills. somewhere around 8. however, this movie is as close to 100% as any of us can get, so im fine with how it is

yeah there are a few others but this is the only one i felt like pointing out becuase i think it could have been easliy done, the rest (like the few volcanoe rocks that get away) are probably as close to impossible as there is. it's still one of the coolest videos i've seen in a long time, especially since i own this game and have never managed to beat it, so it's really fun to watch someone do it so perfectly

Question: Which bosses can be defeated by simply dodging and waiting? The first can, I'm not sure about the rest.

Bosses generally self-destruct in Gradius games, if I recall correctly.

Is there some idea you're thinking about? If you're considering a no-shooting version, I'm not sure that would be so entertaining.

OmnipotentEntity, could you please stop making so many edits? Everytime that someone makes an edit, it is reported in the irc channel, and all your edits disrupt the channel. Can't you make all of your edits all at once, instead of making 5 edits in a row? If you are making the edits because of typos, you might try using the 'Preview" button.

This thread is old... Anyway, I looked at the recently published Gradius TAS and got rather interested about the game, I also thought that it looked kinda suboptimal (a thought that was strengthened by the rerecord count) so I decided to try out the game and look for improvements. Here is what I've got so far, it ends in the beginning of the bubble level (that one is really tough) and it is 200 or so frames faster than the published run. 50(!) frames was gained in the menu, another bunch was saved on lag reduction (especially at the big sand worms) and a whole lot was saved on the boss battle by finding his hp in the RAM watcher and having a second option there. Now I'd like to know if anyone knows anything useful about this game, like RAM addresses or other information about it that might be useful. (I've only played it once before) Also I'd like to know what you think about the run so far so I'll know if it is worth to continue or not.

Ok, you definitely play with danger a lot more than Krocketneo, and your shots look more confident and precise as a whole (like when you kill a barrage of enemies with a single volley, and other stuff like that). I'm enjoying the result very much. And don't forget that you can use a bomb item to kill enemies with less lag (since you're aiming for all kills in faster time, not higher score), Krocketneo lost a LOT of time avoiding it to kill the enemies manually and have the game slow down to a crawl. By the way, in case you're wondering about how the bubble stage looks on the original version, here it is. And it's only the first loop, out of like, six.

Yeah I will use the bombs when it is beneficial, I've skipped all of them hitherto because the areas where I could have used them where lag free.

Ha, this game is insane... Anyway, what I really meant with the stage being tough is that it is really hard to TAS, it lags a lot and if you are to kill all enemies it is very hard to do anything about it.

WIP2 Hah, ~1120 frames ahead after boss2, so roughly 900 frames of improvement in the second level. At least 90% of which were lag. That being said there is still a LOT of lag, those bubbles are real devils. Also this is probably the most boring level in the game, so it's nice to have that out of the way.

That was slick. :) By the way, before you make the awfulest mistake Krocketneo did: continue recording with "sync samples with sound CPU" option. You will notice that the music and sound effects no longer sound like complete shit.

I really want to commend you, Cpadolf, for running this game so soon after a publication. I knew there was an absolute buttload of lag present, but without actually trying myself, all I saw was an improvement to two movies that were three years old. If I'd known how poorly it was done, I would have voted no. But no matter now, I'm actually looking forward to a fully capable TASer working his magic on this:) I can try to find RAM addresses for bosses if it would help you out, just let me know.

love your style :) anyway, two questions: I guess the missiles weren't used in KRocketNeo's run due to causing more lag than actual damage. What happens if you set missiles to a different button in the options, then use them only whenever useful? Or are you confident they won't help score an additional kill (or faster kill in lag-situations) at all? second, by setting the ! powerup to Mega Crush, you can use additional bombs. I didn't try it on the later levels, but wouldn't that allow more kills or at least some instant lag-reduction if you time your powerups wisely?

So will that work for the whole movie if I do that now?

Thanks for the offer, but after fiddling around a little with RAM searching I figured out how it worked. So I have found the the boss hp ones, and I don't think there are any other important ones.

The missiles might help to kill some more things in one of the later levels but I think I could do the same amount of kills with chargelaser (running in to things) Maybe maybe it could be useful, but I'm not sure. Mega crush still only kills small easy killable enemies, like regular bombs they don't work on for example the bubbles. Also it would take ~2 seconds to get to selecting it since you would have to chose and wait for the blinking to quit on 3 more selections. And I would only be able to use them very rarely.

Pretty much. It doesn't change anything in the input, just tells the emulator what exactly to do when trying to play it back.
