Knuckles in Sonic The Hedgehog TAS by JXQ

Essentials:
This run satisfies the following criteria:
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Ignores delays caused by bonus effects
  • Emulator used: Gens 9Z
  • Suggested Screenshot:
Here we have an impressive hack put together by Stealth, placing Knuckles into Sonic the Hedgehog 1. The game has been discussed here a bit, but you can find its official topic at the Sonic 2 Beta message board. All of Knuckles' abilities are preserved and are true to the feel of playing as Knuckles in other Sonic games with LOCK-ON TECHNOLOGY.
I worked on this run and my Sonic run concurrently. The games were similar enough that doing them together helped keeped things fresh in my mind, yet different enough that it didn't get too repetitive.
I suggest watching the Sonic run first before this one, because the Sonic run shows how the game was meant to be played before watching this run break that mold.
Times:
LevelTime
Green Hill 10:17
Green Hill 20:11

Labyrinth 10:23

Star Light 30:30
Scrap Brain 10:21
Scrap Brain 20:29
Scrap Brain 30:13
Final Zone1:12
Points of Interest:
  • Green Hill 3 - The bottom route after the speed shoes does get to the boss faster, but not being able to hit him right away more than negates this difference.
  • Labyrinth 2 & 3 - Releasing the button while sliding on the ground gives a pause, which gets the ball rolling for some nice zipping action.
  • Scrap Brain 1 - Sonic's route with the zipping is quite a bit slower than the route taken here (Thanks to Ouzo for this route).
Thanks to:
  • Upthorn, again, for going above and beyond helping with Gens memory watching and even coding a special version for use in this run. He also pointed out several improvements since he knows Knuckles TASing quite well.
  • Ouzo, for a quality completed run of this game that I could compare myself against.
  • Nitsuja, for showing me some basics about Knuckles and spin-dash in the first level, and for showing me a faster method for Green Hill 2.
Enjoy the run!

This makes watching the Marble Zone not so boring...This run is most excellent for its use of Knuckles' abilities and the extra zipping is very tasty. what can i say i'm a sucker for zipping and glitching

Watching this, it's pretty clear that S1 was not designed with spin-dashes in mind. Great work, JXQ.

Hi, I can't really find any information on that offical site. Is this rom listed in GoodGen 3.00 database? If it is can I get the CRC or the name please. Thanks.

May I request you to read the submission text? There is a link to the post of the Sonic 2 Beta forum boards, which supplies the direct link to the hack itself. It's really hard not to notice it.

Hi, I apologize but checked that link and was unable to find it. It's no big deal.

I'm afraid to say you really didn't look that hard :)

See that link there? I bolded it a bit so its easier to see. If you go there, in the very first paragraph theres another link:

I wasn't 100% happy with the original release, so I did something about it. I thought a new topic was best, since some people are probably bored enough with the conversation in the original thread to end up missing this, had it been put there instead
In there is the hack required to play the movie. In your defence, the link is nowhere to be seen on the publication, but perhaps if you dug a little deeper on some of them by reading the submission you might have more luck finding answers.

Hi, thanks I didn't figure the link marked something was the file. I still find it difficult to believe it isn't in the GoodGen 3.00 db. There are 3 different Knuckles in Sonic 1 hacks but they aren't by the same person.

I think Stealth's is relatively new, compared to the others.

Makes sense, I noticed in the read me file he talks about 1 of the other Knuckles in Sonic by HiveBrain. Iill send a message to the GoodTools team and make sure they know about it.

I remember when one time back when I still had a genesis I was able to play as Knuckles in the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Tho right now I don't relly remember how, but I think that it was done by putting the cartridge into sagas 32x. (tho I might be wrong about that) Well for some reason when I downloaded the video from Bit torrent it did not work (this is one of only 2 videos that don't work) I am using MPC to play videos and have watched a few from this site already. The prob is that in the video the sound plays ok, but the actual video is nothing more then static.

Sonic 1 + Sonic & Knucles = Sonic 3 Mini-Game Heaven. The only games that the lock-on works with is Sonic 3 and Sonic 2. All other games give a "NO WAY" message, so you're sleep-posting. ^^

you could push A, B, and C, if I remember correctly, and it would generate a minigame for you using some info from the locked-on cart. At least I assume that's how it worked since it was always the same level per game I tried it on.

Perhaps you remember Sonic 2 & Knuckles, in which you play as Knuckles only through the whole game.

I know what I remember if you don't believe me then fine. I don't even have my old hardware anymore to even try doing it again, but I remember wishing I tried it with the sonic one programmers cheat when I had the chance.

I used to think the same about the levels in SMB3, that there was a way to get into the middle "suck in" levels (e.g., not the ones you stop on). I remembered it clearly for some time, and even now I do. But the game itself does not have anything there. It cannot be done; false memory. I suspect the same has happened here.

I really don't want to argue this. I just want to find the patch file to watch the speed run

I can see why. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(16-bit)#Knuckles_in_Sonic_the_Hedgehog (The link, course, would be better if you did not have to copy paste for the 2nd half. Though no idea what I am doing wrong. Ho hum.) I can feel your pain though. You would think if fans could do it Sonic Team could. I wish they were as competent as a true fan too. Anyways the torrent will always work if you can not use google is for some reason not enough to find the ROM. It really is a run good enough to download the AVI for.

PHPbb link parser, much like nearly any other, doesn't like parentheses. If you substitute them by their hex codes (%28 and %29 respectively), it will work fine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_%2816-bit%29#Knuckles_in_Sonic_the_Hedgehog

I did try the avi from bit torrent, but only video player I got works for this kind of file (just found out) and I think it was causing the audio to dysync (it was the video for sonic 3 speed run from this site :P

Since it's a hack, I have a link in the submission text to the official thread, which has a link to the ROM.
