I always wondered why smileys always go :) and not (: with the asymmetry of some characters, you could make amazing new emotions! or not. i guess it's because we read left to right and top to bottom, so it's easier to transform left into top. do smileys go the opposite way in, say, hebrew?

#1: A holy person; alternatively, a person living their last happy moment before they're hit by a falling rock. #2: Very sad, perhaps gravely disappointed person; alternatively, someone disappointed with their poorly-made mohawk. #3: A poorly designed happy doll; alternatively, a poorly designed wine glass. #4: Маша! (Sorry, internal joke.) #5: A hilt of a blade; alternatively, a dildo. #6: Warp's face when coming up with the smileys. How many hits/misses?

Funnily, that sentence can have two different meanings.

Obviously, if you didn't read those wikipedia articles, you can't understand what I mean.
Actually, you took it out of context. I was writing to say "I didn't catch your post" as in I missed it and wanted to reply to it. I also did read the article, so I'm not sure why you automatically assumed that I "obviously" didn't read those articles, but that's why I was talking with phunqsauce in IRC: <phunqsauce> lol at the ASCII art vs. smiley debate in the forums <phunqsauce> IMO the Piccolo ASCII art is not a smiley <meepers> it's not -_- <phunqsauce> and yes i did read the wiki <meepers> For the most part, I think smiley is pretty much the same meaning as emoticon (I should paraphrase this, as I meant "smiley = emoticon for the most part nowadays) <phunqsauce> yup to which you replied: <PhilCote> Well, it's pointless to argue with donkeys. We can't all be asses you know <3 Edit: And what if I didn't read those wikipedia articles? I would still understand what you mean because I'm one of the most smiley-using people in IRC (ascii art, emoticons, or otherwise)

Actually, without a question mark, it can only have one meaning. And rightly, for the question mark meaning, it ought to be divided by a semicolon, or even a period, rather than simply a comma. Funnily, the one meaning it can have in its current form (within the rules of grammar), is most likely the meaning that was not intended by boco.
