Initially, the target was to break 15 mins, since the previous run had 12-13 seconds of known improvements, which would've taken it nicely below 15 minutes. Although with a little bit of messing around in the basement on a N64, and tossing away all the tiring and obvious lines of enquiry in the past, I began to get suspicious of possible BLJ locations, as I managed to get 3-4 BLJs in a row on a console, which made me want to fully TAS it, although it was not done on the one seen in the finished run as it later turned out to be impossible to gain any sort of infinite speed. In total, there are 5 BLJ locations in the basement, with another one or two locations being entirley unconfirmed. It seems that a banister, unlike an outer wall, is able to hold Mario and stop him sliding out of the BLJ location, which is why the previously mentioned ones don't work. Sadly, for the time being, DDD is not skippable, so there is no 0 star run. It's a shame that this makes the 16 star catagory obselete, since it wasn't quite perfected yet.

I had just came back from a holiday to find all the hype about new BLJ locations in the basement. Needless to say, I was keen to investigate these, as it meant a possible 1 or 0 star TAS. When I found out about them, I checked the TAS forums, and found that AKA had found something that might have been useful, so I contacted him about it and was informed that he was unable to gain enough speed to break the door. I suggested that we find a way to get Mario stuck against the banister, so AKA and I experimented with the stairs and eventually came to the conclusion that holding the analogue stick in the general direction of the nearby key door meant that Mario would not leave the BLJ area until he had a significantly higher amount of speed than in AKA's initial attempt, which happened to be enough to break the door. I'm satisfied with the final time of the run, after all, it is the first of its kind, but even then I feel that it's very optimal.

About the glitch...

Riddle me this It liek at the corner of the basement but next to the slope that slopes down to the water, I was facing sideways and I went in the ledge was just above the rim and started bljing like mad,
unfortunatley I've never done it again and I can't record nor upload any screenshots, but the descriptions there so anyone can do what I just did.

Exactly. "Did you enjoy watching this movie?" is essentially the same as "Is this movie publish-worthy?" because the answers influence whether the movie will be published, and you only want to publish movies that are enjoyable. Right?

There's only like 5 N64 runs though. I haven't watched tetrisphere, but that looks very interesting. Reguardless of the glitches in sm64, I still found this new video very entertaining. If you aren't in to this type of run, appreciate the 120 star run. This site aims for speed and has accomplished just that with this new run. It is faster than the super mario bros. 2 TAS, which blows my mind.

With the Megaman games, however, you at least get to see all of the levels in the game, and you get to see each individual level broken in to pieces. For people who want to see more of the game (I don't), we already have an excellent (or so I'm told) 120-star movie, so I think obsoleting was the correct way to go.
Disagreed. There are three points to be made here that immediately spring to mind
  1. It is entirely possible to want to see the game played for more than 6 minutes without wanting to see it played for nearly an hour and a half.
  2. The 120-star run is incredibly repetitive, due to playing every level 7 times. The routes over lap too much, and the levels don't have enough variety to justify being played 7 times back to back.
  3. Comparing the average quality of play of the 120-star run to the average quality of play of the 16-star run, the 16-star comes out way ahead. (For clarification, by quality of play I mostly mean things like speed and glitch exploitation.)
Now, to throw in an opinion-based statement, I feel that the run this obsoleted was more entertaining than either this run, or the 120-star run, and I believe there are many others who would agree.

While I probably did find the 16 star more entertaining, 95% of what is found in that run can be found in the 120 star run (especially when someone gets around to improving it again :) ). Still, this is a groundbreaking run. I suppose that many of you complaining about this run don't remember when BLJing was discovered. In 2002 the first 31 star runs were completed. Then, that same year, MIPS was used to create a 16 star run. Immediately people began speculating about a possible 1 or 0 star run. Now 1 star has been achieved, this is a GREAT milestone and something anticipated by the SM64 community for 5 years. PLUS, this appears to be a TAS exclusive. What more could you ask for?!! I voted YES.

I'm quite certain BLJing into the moat door is impossibe. There is a loading trigger on it too, and you can't open doors underwater. :(

So if you go through the key doors using that glitch, and try and open it from the other side they will not open? Do you think you could access the area with invisible cap switch somehow using BLJs?

We were hypothesizing... What if we could get into VCUtM without ever going into the castle? Just somehow BLJ into the loading point or something (it seems that unlike the doors, the loading point is still there, but just covered by a grate. Kind of like the entrance to Wiggler's Cave), and maybe just die from inside there. What would happen after that? Maybe the water would be gone from the moat. We haven't really tested this; using the level select thing doesn't work, but if anyone knows a GS code or something, trying it out would help.

vanish cap under the moat :D seems like a very plausible improvement, that is unless the water puts an immediate halt to the built up speed.

I tried using metal mario to open the moat door but he just stands there. Also using a cheat to bypass the VCutM grate doesn't do much good as it seems like the trigger to enter the area doesn't exist until you drain the moat, otherwise it's just solid ground colored black.

I was thinking of some possiblity to glitch to the second bowser.

That has been adressed many times already. Short answer: No. The upper floor loads only if you open the door to the upper floor using the key.

This run can be described in exactly three words: NO FUCKING WAY!!! This run is incredible, revolutionary, whatever you want to call it. It has defied all possible conceptions of 16-star running.
