AKA's comments...
Initially, the target was to break 15 mins, since the previous run had 12-13 seconds of known improvements, which would've taken it nicely below 15 minutes. Although with a little bit of messing around in the basement on a N64, and tossing away all the tiring and obvious lines of enquiry in the past, I began to get suspicious of possible BLJ locations, as I managed to get 3-4 BLJs in a row on a console, which made me want to fully TAS it, although it was not done on the one seen in the finished run as it later turned out to be impossible to gain any sort of infinite speed. In total, there are 5 BLJ locations in the basement, with another one or two locations being entirley unconfirmed. It seems that a banister, unlike an outer wall, is able to hold Mario and stop him sliding out of the BLJ location, which is why the previously mentioned ones don't work. Sadly, for the time being, DDD is not skippable, so there is no 0 star run. It's a shame that this makes the 16 star catagory obselete, since it wasn't quite perfected yet.
Swordless Link's comments...
I had just came back from a holiday to find all the hype about new BLJ locations in the basement. Needless to say, I was keen to investigate these, as it meant a possible 1 or 0 star TAS. When I found out about them, I checked the TAS forums, and found that AKA had found something that might have been useful, so I contacted him about it and was informed that he was unable to gain enough speed to break the door. I suggested that we find a way to get Mario stuck against the banister, so AKA and I experimented with the stairs and eventually came to the conclusion that holding the analogue stick in the general direction of the nearby key door meant that Mario would not leave the BLJ area until he had a significantly higher amount of speed than in AKA's initial attempt, which happened to be enough to break the door. I'm satisfied with the final time of the run, after all, it is the first of its kind, but even then I feel that it's very optimal.
People we want to thank...
Rikku: For the DDD and BitS timesavers.
mr_roberts_z: For the idea of long jumping after performing the stair glitch in the room beyond the second keydoor.
About the glitch...
Riddle me this
It liek at the corner of the basement
but next to the slope that slopes down to the water,
I was facing sideways and I went in the ledge
was just above the rim and started bljing like mad,
unfortunatley I've never done it again
and I can't record nor upload any screenshots,
but the descriptions there
so anyone can do what I just did.

If a game is so badly broken that the fastest run hardly even plays it, all that means is that a 100% run or something similar may also be accepted, it doesnt mean that the fast version wont be.
*Amazing*
And, to the nay-sayers:
This is more of a challenge to other TASers than it is an explicitly entertaining run. I'm very impressed by the collection of methods used to cut this game into shreds. If you just want action without consideration, rent a video.
There seems to be only one naysayer, Xkeeper (note the one no vote). It's just that he's screaming as loudly as he can, which makes it seem like there a lot of them.
[938] N64 "1 star" Super Mario 64 (USA) by Swordless Link & AKA in 06:47.27 (m64,avi)
Whoa 7 pages of comments already, I would just like to add that this was so good that this will change the rating system for movies that come to theaters. Previously 4 stars was the best rating a movie can get, but now 1 star will be the best rating.
I'm usually the one who complains about the camera work in SM64 runs, but the camera work was really good this time. I didn't see this coming. You guys beat the game really fast, and made it look good, too. Easy Yes vote. I just wish I had seen this sooner, but it's never too late to say "good job". :)
P.S. This is almost a "Bowser-only" run. Three Bowser fights, and Bowser's sub. All three of the fights were excellent, and the camera captured all of the action in an almost Matrix-like way. The only thought that occurred to me while watching Mario fly through the basement door was, "can he land inside the entrance to Bowser 2 and skip DDD?" I'm guessing that's a no, or this would have been a 0 star run.

I like how, as my opinion now represents 0% of the audience, it's still getting crap.
(Forgive me, but honestly, this is going from stupid to hilarity.)
And by the way, others have stated that they agree with me (in part or whole about the lack of entertainment in this TAS), so you need to think about what you're saying before you insert your foot fully into your mouth.
Sure, the run is not especially entertaining, heck I've watched all the previous runs and don't see much new except the new massive skip and a few optimizations.
But you want the run to be rejected because of that. You're the ONLY one out of about 120 that voted that holds that opinion. Get this; NO ONE AGREES WITH YOU.
Let me ask you, do you enjoy being argumentative and contrarian? Since you refuse to suck it up after you've been owned so hard, that's the only possible conclusion.
Where does he say he wanted the run to be rejected? The question asked is "Did you enjoy watching this movie?", not "Do you think this movie should be accepted?". He gave his opinion of the movie, stop berating him for it.

So if other people don't like his opinion he should change it all of a sudden? Just because most people like the movie doesn't mean everyone suddenly has to agree with them; different people have different opinions. Also, why do you care? One person didn't like the movie. One person. Out of the 115 people that voted, that's almost insignificant, and you are making a really big deal out of nothing.
Anyways, what kind of indication of how good the movie is would your vote be if you simply changed your opinion to represent the side that was winning in the poll?
I didn't want to say anything because it's kind of like replying to all in order to tell everyone to stop replying to all, but it hasn't stopped yet.
Xkeeper stated an opinion, which he is entitled to do. You don't have to agree with his opinion, and he doesn't have to agree with yours. Just state your own opinion and stop caring about what everyone else thinks. I have disagreed with the majority on a number of occasions, and I plan to disagree again in the future.

Insane. Have you guys tested out doing BLJ after falling through the top of the castle? I might be an idiot, but it seems like it might be easy to glitch something there since you are already in a gltiched up area.
I hope to see a 0 star run, but I assume that will not happen.

No reason to rule a 0 star run out so far.
With BLJ speed, it opens up all kinds of strange movement options, possably even arcing back toward to door to the basement, and passing far behind bowser2 to bypass that last stubborn star.

Yes I have and it doesn't work, I don't think the water works by doing a surface like RARE N64 games tend to do.

Yet you are the one taking so much offense at this... I am only getting annoyed because you continue to drag it on, never realizing that, hey, maybe someone might not like this movie. Gee whiz.
I never said I would reject it. I didn't enjoy the movie and thought it was rather boring overall. If it was a less-notable accomplishment, yes, I would have been completely for rejection, but this movie accomplishes something incredible overall.
I never expected anybody to agree with me, either, although if you had read the thread, you would see a few people beginning to see my point (Kles jumps to mind), and many other people who are not involved with Tasvideos seem to agree with me. <shrug>
And again, you are throwing out personal insults. You are only proving the problems brought up in my editorial true, and showing just how bad they are.
You need to realize that not everyone will agree on everything. Just because I disagree with you is no reason to be upset or angry. If anything, you should be thankful that someone has enough courage to speak up, especially concerning almost everyone's actions in this thread. If I wasn't such a stubborn asshole, I probably would've left the community already, and if not probably have at least stopped giving an opinion on this site's runs.
In summary:
There is a severe problem with "vote no" == "reject the run" in your heads. Voting 'no' currently answers one question and one question only: if you enjoyed watching the movie. It does not ask "should this movie be published"... and even then, who cares if I think the run should be rejected? Once again, it's an opinion -- I'm not going to suddenly multiply into 500 copies and get the run rejected, I just personally think it stunk.
And on that note, you all really, really need to stop taking this so personally. Even I'm getting tired of fighting this battle.

I'm quite disappointed that this run was possible. The previous 16-star run was truly excellent - finally an N64 movie that was up to par with the rest of the site! - and now, this has removed many of the more entertaining parts by either skipping the levels, or speeding through a normally entertaining level backwards. Yawnsnake.
<Swordless> Go hug a tree, you vegetarian (I bet you really are one)
Thought a bit late since it's already published, I just want to cast my vote.
Definitely voting YES for it.
This running is amazing. As few others has noted, it's unexpected to see a 1-star run. BLJ rules!

I'm disappointed that you're disappointed. People go to all this trouble to find a great new trick that everyone's dying to see, and then when it happens, everyone changes their tune to "Oh but it's so boooooooooooooriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnngg!"
put yourself in my rocketpack if that poochie is one outrageous dude
I think the movie was cool. For people who want to see more of the game (I don't), we already have an excellent (or so I'm told) 120-star movie, so I think obsoleting was the correct way to go.
Also, people need to stop personally attacking Xkeeper for just having an opinion. When saying people, I refer to everyone in particular.

This is not just in people's heads.

So what if I played the game before? Does it automatically disqualify me from presenting an opinion on it? I find the movie entertaining to watch.
(There are other games that I have not played that I found enjoyable, by the way, if you are trying to inflict some sort of bias that isn't there in my statement, so your argument further fails.)
Opinions from both people who have and have not played the game are vital when judging the technical quality and entertainment value of a movie for many reasons. People who have played 'the game' tend to like well-played runs of it even if said game is patently boring by any other standard (case and point). I agree that it is possible to like runs of games that one has not played, but I think that the entertainment value is the result of the game itself (music, graphics, accessiblity, etc). I can think of several runs that fit into that category off of the top of my head.

At the risk of fueling the fire of debate, the same could be said by some with the Megaman games. Speed doesn't always equal entertainment. Its a shame that its usually speed that is checked when there are major time differences, but what other option is there? Lots of different categories? "Glitchless" runs? But then that wouldn't fit for the nicely lengthed 16-star run. perhaps "Slightly glitchless but enough to make this run interesting".
I dare suggest there be a TAE (tool assisted entertaining runs) section where perhaps the highest voted entertaining runs that have been obsoleted are displayed.
