Just a silly off-topic poll: Which do you like better, a forum system that forever archives all your old posts for future reference, such as this one, or one that regularly deletes posts that haven't been active for X days?

I'd rather have a historical archive of all activity. It helps people keep a chronicle of all that has happened for each user. Anything that rapidly deletes history seems pretty detrimental to a curious user. After all, it's not such a huge burden on the system as is, right? A few MB of text, links, and images isn't so bad in the grand scheme of things.

I'd rather have it archived, that way, topics for games with old information can be resurrected (which is a good thing) for new runs, rather than effort being duplicated.

This forum is not expanding at an uncontrollable pace, and it's fairly well moderated. Hence there's no need to delete past threads, which often contain stuff that turns out in a search and is useful.

I'd break ranks with the unanimous sentiment if I disagreed. But I really don't. Forums that delete old inactive threads are a benefit to the server administrators, not the users.

definetly keep them, if it's technically possible. I've been moderating for 5 years on a board with 100K+ registered users which deletes old threads every few months. History repeats itself, the same questions get asked over and over again because the old answers are gone. Horrible..

I've been a mod/smod/admin for far less time (13 months now) at a slightly smaller board, and I can tell you that the same questions would be asked over and over again even if the threads weren't deleted or archived. For the record, we archive things, but we never delete threads, so people can search for them if the search function is actually working (<_<).
<Zurreco> if so called professional players cant adapt to every playing field, theyre obviously not that great

I've seen a forum that had well over 1GB of posts alone and still never pruned them; all threads were open unless explicitly closed, as well. Especially on a forum like this, auto-pruning threads would be a dumb, dumb, dumb idea.

Question: Besides conserving server resources, what advantages are there to pruning?

Badly designed databases may slow down over time as a site gets larger. Calculating the number of pages isn't cheap without a good index. Searches get slower over time as more data to index arrives. Good databases and smart programming can make the lag extremely slow -- somethingawful has some huge stuff and it's immensely popular, yet it keeps going.

sure, but if they are you can at least justify a thread close instead of having to explain the same shit again. ;)

Why don't you back-long-jump on the door on the lobby and go upstairs?

What we at least could do is delete duplicated threads which offers absolutely nothing new or relevant. I swear I could find and delete at least between 20-40 of those kind of threads.
