Flashback is a lot like a sci-fi Prince of Persia, only the controls don't make you want to throw yourself off a cliff. Poor Conrad takes a few blows to the head and rolls around more than a hedgehog, but he gets to bypass much of the game with his magical ability to walk through walls. That doesn't let him completely off the hook, though: He still has to hunt down the credits to buy his way to the second and third levels, and can't do the missions in level 2 out of order. Additionally, enemies have a nasty habit of hitting Conrad when he's trying to walk through a wall, so they have to be dealt with.
Emulator used: Gens v.9
Glitches:
  • Invincibility: Some animations render me invincible. The policeman in level 2 doesn't hit me because of this.
  • Walk through walls (confirmed Genesis version only): Stand right next to a wall, facing away from it. Hold A, tap away from the wall, then release A and hold the d-pad towards the wall as you're turning around. When you're done turning around, you'll be starting on running straight through the wall; at this point you can hold A again to continue running.
  • Fun with walls: As much as it looks like it, the game is not set up like a grid of rooms. As a result, if I try to walk through a wall to a new screen that doesn't have a legitimate exit, either I get death by falling, wall-and-floorless rooms which lead directly to death by gravity, or in a couple rare cases, an error code which crashes the game. Inside a wall, movement is limited mostly to running and run-jumping, unless you're exiting said wall.
  • I have stuff: If there's something I need in the next level and I don't have it going through levels, the game gives it to me. The ID card, the force field, and the teleporter all magically appear in my inventory even though I never pick them up.
  • Gunplay: A force field will only absorb one shot, so in the case of the mutant at the start of level 2 I have to shoot twice; once to get rid of the shield, once to kill him. It's faster than waiting for the shield to disappear.
  • Sit and deliver: For anything you would normally have to turn towards the middle to do (talk to people, flip switches, etc) you can do while crouching with no lag whatsoever. There are a couple instances where this doesn't apply, for whatever reason.
  • Backwards walking: If I'm facing a wall and try to draw my gun, I'll take a step backwards first. I can then hit the button again to not draw my gun.
  • Going up, the hard way: On level 2 of Death Tower, I start climbing up just as the little electric orb thingy hits me, and for whatever reason the game thinks I've already climbed up, so I get blasted onto the upper deck.
The game screen is divided into sixteen steps, so I don't have to do any pixel-perfect maneuvering. However, there are a lot of options for getting from point A to point B, so I wound up measuring the number of frames it takes to perform a majority of the moves in the game, and used that as a basis for planning the majority of my movement.

Bisqwit: Well explained enough :) Processing this movie.
Bisqwit: Done.

I found this run quite nice. Flashback is a game which manges to be hard and *look* hard. You do some very nice moves to avoid shots and generally move around faster. The main entertainment in this movie comes from the massive use of glitches. This one looks like a very complex game (by level design). It's a very beautiful game for it's time and has very fluent animation. There's also some nice music, but it only plays for a shot period of time. :( Is this a sequel (or prequel) to a game called Another World? It's quite similar and I've played it a lot. Anyway, nice run and it kept me well entertained for a nice 25 minutes. :)

What Tombad is thinking of is 'Out of This World'. It isn't affiliated with Flashback at all. As for nifboy's movie: I was very impressed with it. The glitches cut the game time almost in half, and the overall planning is very evident. There were one or two points where you seemed to kill enemies for no obvious reason, but I trusted your knowledge of the game. Good show.

Did a little research. Seems like 'Another World' is the EU-release name for Out Of This World. http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/data/9221.html Anyway, seems like it's made by the same company, no wonder it looks similar.

I'm not a fan of flash back. But I just watched the run. If you ask me it's a boring game, but you played it very well. Pulled of some very cool stuff I must say. I know it's a hard game in general. I played it some when I was younger and I didn't get that far really. Anyways. I will click the YES button on this one. Perhaps there are more eager fans out there who really appreciate this run. Cheers mate! :)

I watched this movie yesterday, and I'm very impressed. Clearly a lot of investigation and effort has gone into making this video. The use of bugs is also very nice. Sadly, this movie desynched for me in the death tower, but probably this is because my version is too new. It happened exactly when you were climbing upward and was hit by one of the orbs, and you landed on lower deck, not upper. So I guess that bug was one they fixed in the later versions (but walking trough walls, which would seem like a bigger issue, is still there.) In any case, this is a clear yes vote.

Beautiful, simply beautiful. Clearly a worthy movie! -Josh
but then you take my 75 perchance chance of winning, if we was to go one-on-one, and then add 66 and two-thirds ch...percents...i got a 141 and two-thirds chance of winning at sacrifice

Another World was the original name (Delphine is based in France), and I suspect the name was changed in the US release because at the time, there was a TV Soap Opera of the same name. I never played this game before and I have no idea what's going on in this run, but I enjoyed watching it anyway... hahaha. I'd vote "yes," but seeing as it's already being processed, I guess that would be moot.

That's the trouble Going up, the hard way: On level 2 of Death Tower, I start climbing up just as the little electric orb thingy hits me, and for whatever reason the game thinks I've already climbed up, so I get blasted onto the upper deck. When the orb hit him, hr didn't climb up. I know the video is right, but I'm having some trobles here, can you help me, please ^^ I'd never see anyone finishing this game... Thanks again ^^

>When the orb hit him, hr didn't climb up. I have had this exact same problem, but it's been so long I don't remember what I did to fix it. Are you sure you have the correct ROM? Try a few different ones if there are other versions.
